“THE ANGEL OF MERCY”POV
It has only been a day since I saved Trisha Pardue and I was already feeling the itch to save another! God’s work is never done and I felt like challenging myself. I was pacing the expanse of my apartment when I had a delicious idea. I would see what my new nemesis was up too. Garrison O’Grady was an opponent that I needed to keep a close eye on! I was almost to my phone to look into O’Grady’s activities when there was knock at the door. I froze then hesitantly made my way towards the door, avoiding any windows that might get me killed. I peered through the peep hole and what I saw almost gave me a heart attack! There were two policemen standing outside of my apartment! This threw me off as I was not expecting police at my door so soon. I know that I made sure to wipe everything clean so I wasn’t leaving evidence behind. I sterilized then torched the car that I had stolen. Only after reassuring myself that I had left no evidence, I reluctantly unlocked the deadbolt but kept the chain in place as I hesitantly opened the door enough to get a good look at these officers. “Can I help you officers?”
“Afternoon sir, can we ask you a few questions?” One of them asked.
Fuck! I don’t need this s**t right now! “Show me some ID’s please.”
“Absolutely.” They both showed me ID’s one was from the FBI and the other was a local cop.
I groaned inwardly, just f*****g great! “Can I ask what this is about?” I needed then to leave and quickly so the sooner they asked their questions the quicker they could leave.
They looked at each other for a moment before FBI guy began with the questioning. “Well, there was a murder that occurred yesterday and we were wondering if you may know of anything that could be pertinent to the investigation.”
I instantly began to panic, maybe he did leave something behind for them to come to me so quickly! I kept my face neutral while I had a churning of thoughts and emotions on the inside. “A…murder?” I made sure to play the part of a person terrified of death. “Who was killed? Where?” I quickly fired off my questions like a nervous person would when confronted by a person of authority.
The local detective answered this time. “We cannot disclose the name of the victim until his family has been notified by then the news will already have their story. As to the location it was in a field not too far from this location.” He then pulled out his notepad. “What is your full name, contact information?”
This got my attention, why were they asking for my name? “Do you think I killed whoever it was the was killed? Is that why you are asking for my identification?!”
FBI guy fully faced me. “No one is accusing anyone, all we are trying to do is find out if anyone heard anything that might help us catch the killer before more victims appear.”
I nodded my head. “My name is Kevin Bentley and my phone number is (507)694-2289.”
“Can you tell me where you were last night?” The other cop asked.
“Why do you need to know? I thought I wasn’t being accused of anything? Do I need a lawyer?!” I rambled.
FBI guy quickly pats my shoulder, trying to comfort me I think. “No one is accusing you, these are just routine questions that we will be asking everyone that we talk to.”
I narrowed my eyes at them, assessing their every move. “I was at the Glistening Toad Club from 8:00 p.m. and I left at bar closing around 2:00 a.m. I met someone there and we went back to her place. I stayed there until about an hour ago.”
“Can you tell me her name?”
Now I was getting irritated! “Look, when we left the bar I was toasted! I couldn’t tell you what I had ate for lunch or at the club. So, I’m sorry, but I didn’t get her name or phone number.” I acted embarrassed about my shameless night.
“I have just one more question for you.” I rolled my eyes in frustration but nodded for him to continue. “When you left the club, did you take a cab or drive? If you drove, which car is yours? Also did you get her address? After all, you did leave her place this morning, correct?”
I glared at him. “That was 4 questions not one! I will however answer them so that way you guys can go find the killer and stop wasting time on me. I took a cab to the club, we left the club in an Uber. I had to get her address so that I could get picked up this morning. Before you ask she lives in the Golden Estates number 96. Now if that is all I have an appointment to get to at my shop.”
FBI guy c****d his head. “Where do you work?”
“I own a shop downtown, I’m a locksmith and I have an appointment that I am now running late for so if there is no more questions I must ask you to leave so that I don’t lose my contract with this client.” I quickly shut the door before they could ask any more questions. I needed to spook Garrison some more and keep him off my trail at the same time. I quickly showered once I was sure the cops had vacated the premises. I got dressed in my uniform and left my residence and drove to my shop. When I arrived, I was greeted by Ted, my teenage employee. Ted met me outside as I finished parking. I greeted him. “Did everything go okay for you last night?” I only just realized that I was in such a hurry to get here that I didn’t call O’Grady.
Ted was about 5’3”, very small for his age. He was always picked on in school, but he was continuously in good spirits. “There were no problems, but the lady that you told me about called to reschedule. She will be here in an hour.”
“Thank you, would you mind setting up for me this morning? I have a call to make before I deal with any customers.” I said as I opened the front doors.
“I’d be happy to.” Ted set out to do as I asked the second the doors were opened.
I pulled my phone out as soon as I knew Ted was out of hearing range. I quickly dialed O’Grady’s number.
He picked up on the second ring. “Let me guess, this is the pain in me arse?”
Kevin smirked to himself. “Good morning to you too, are you ready to have some fun?”
There was a pause before a very cautious O’Grady spoke. “Depends on what ye have in mind.”
“How about we see which one of us can kill Detective Sierra Ryans first!” With that said, I hung up the phone and headed into the shop. After being thrown off by the cops showing up this morning I just needed this little distraction to keep him busy so that I can have the advantage of him.
