Chapter 1:The Most Pitiful "Moonlit Lover"
Amelia Cross sat dizzily on the sofa, listening to the man in front of her chatter on incessantly. Amelia, don't be sad. Ethan is just playing around with that woman. You’re the one he's always truly cared about.
"Didn't you notice that her facial features are a bit similar to yours?" he continued, lowering his voice. I heard that to keep Ethan around, she had plastic surgery to match her face shape and features. She doesn't look at all like she did in college.
Amelia Cross propped her chin in her hand, remaining silent.
The man felt puzzled.
Since they had pulled her out of the pool after she had been pushed in, Amelia hadn't said a word.
Could it be that, this time, she was truly heartbroken?
...
Actually, the most confused person here was Amelia Cross herself.
She remembered she had been by the sea, but when she opened her eyes, she found herself at a party.
Yes, she had entered the world of a novel.
The previous night, while browsing her phone, Amelia had accidentally clicked on a melodramatic novel called The Billionaire's Secret Love, drawn on by the character who shared her exact name, Amelia Cross. Curiosity got the best of her, and she began to read.
The "moonlit lover", Amelia Cross, in the story was a wealthy heiress who shared a similar background with the male lead, Ethan Hawthorne.
Ethan had feelings for her, and she liked him too. Though neither of them expressed it openly, they both knew how the other felt.
However, Amelia prioritized her studies and went abroad for a few years.
Ethan was heartbroken, thinking she had placed her academic pursuits above him.
The real-life Amelia Cross, reading alone, felt utterly confused. Of course, studies are important. Given the choice between love and education, one should choose education. Even heiresses need the prestige of a top university to shine.
Besides, aren’t you supposed to be a domineering CEO? Traveling abroad should be as easy as drinking water for you. Couldn’t you visit her?
Clearly, Ethan didn’t see things that way.
During those years they didn’t see each other. He met the novel's female lead, Vivian Harlow.
Vivian had secretly admired Ethan since high school. Knowing about his feelings for Amelia, she deliberately mimicked Amelia’s style and eventually succeeded in winning his affection, becoming his girlfriend.
But of course, this romance story had to include some heartbreak.
Yes, our "moonlit lover" had returned home!
Seeing her former crush now with a girlfriend, the dignified and elegant "moonlit lover" quickly took on the role of a villain, scheming against the female lead and taking pleasure in her troubles.
In an attempt to make Ethan jealous, she even married another man.
Then, time and again, the female lead was misunderstood by Ethan.
And time and again, Ethan discovered the truth, revealing the "moonlit lover’s" true colors.
Naturally, the villainous supporting character couldn’t have a happy ending.
In the end, she collapsed on broken glass, her once-beautiful face bloodied and torn, and fell from the 27th floor.
The female lead, however, stayed happily with Ethan, having three sons with him, all while maintaining her carefully crafted appearance and demeanor.
...
Having become such a pitiful, doomed character, Amelia Cross truly needed to take a moment to process.
The man speaking to Amelia was Oliver Bennett, a mutual friend of both Ethan and Amelia, the "moonlit lover."
In the original novel, Oliver Bennett greatly disliked the female lead, Vivian Harlow. He thought Vivian was manipulative and had climbed her way up by imitating his friend Amelia.
Oliver had known Amelia since they were neighbors. His father and Amelia's father were good friends.
Oliver had called Amelia "sister" since childhood, only switching to calling her by her first name when he grew older and somehow looked even more worn than Amelia.
So, Oliver had always stood by Amelia's side, firmly believing that she and Ethan were a perfect match, and willingly helping Amelia in whatever she needed.
Naturally, anyone who opposed the female lead would end up a miserable scapegoat. Oliver's own fate was tragic; his company went bankrupt, and his wife ran off with his bodyguard, leaving him thoroughly humiliated.
Amelia looked at him, feeling a mix of emotions. Are you... Oliver Bennett?
Oliver looked baffled. Amelia, did that fall knock your brains loose? We've known each other for years. You don’t recognize me?
Amelia's feelings grew even more complicated.
They were both like tragic partners—one falling from a building, the other losing his company and being cheated on.
"I know you're upset; after all, you’ve liked him for so many years..." Oliver lit a cigarette. Damn, that woman’s friends are just as vile. They ganged up on you and pushed you into the pool.
As they spoke, Ethan Hawthorne and Vivian Harlow walked over. Three other girls were with Vivian, all of them glaring at Amelia with a challenging look.
These were the ones who had pushed her into the pool.
Ethan, standing at six foot three, fit the exact image of a CEO with his broad shoulders, long legs, and chiseled features, emanating an air of dominance.
Vivian Harlow, on the other hand, had the typical delicate look of a fragile beauty, with shoulder-length black hair and a white dress, exuding a sense of helplessness.
Seeing Vivian’s somewhat familiar face, Amelia had a bad feeling.
She grabbed Oliver's phone from the table and checked her reflection.
...Sure enough.
This fictional "moonlit lover", Amelia Cross, not only shared her name but looked exactly like her too.
No one likes to be imitated, especially when it’s their face being copied.
Amelia suddenly understood why the "moonlit lover" was always after Vivian.
Who wouldn’t go mad over this?
However, Vivian's beauty was rather plain. Her looks relied heavily on makeup and clothing.
After all, the novel depicted her as an ordinary girl who transformed herself into a high-society beauty.
With just one glance, it was clear Amelia's features were more refined.
After falling into the water, her makeup had been washed away, her shoulders draped with a towel, and her damp black hair flowing behind her, she looked as radiant as a pearl, as if from another world.
In the original plot, the "moonlit lover" had slapped Vivian, coldly demanded an apology from Vivian's three roommates, and made them kneel.
Vivian had cried delicately, stirring Ethan's sympathy, leading him to argue with the "moonlit lover" and leave with Vivian.
Oliver, Amelia's loyal sidekick, would have rushed to her defense. Had he been a girl, he’d likely have tried to tear those people apart.
He stood up in a flash. "How dare they push Amelia into the pool! Ethan, you had better give us an explanation!"
Ethan furrowed his brow. "It was just a little incident. She wasn’t hurt. No big deal..."
Vivian's friends chimed in one after another.
"We didn't mean to."
"Ethan, you’re Vivian's boyfriend. Why did you invite other women here?"
"Some people shouldn’t even be here. He has a girlfriend, but she still clings on."
Amelia gave Oliver a look, signaling him to sit down.
Then she said calmly, "Where are my bag and phone?"
