Chapter Thirty-NineRoger Harris hit his hazard button, slowing down to the hard-shoulder of the dual-carriageway. A few hundred yards ahead, a van had left the road, a plume of smoke rising into the blue sky. In his early fifties, the silver-haired Roger exited his Audi, running towards the van as another car pulled in further on from the crash site. Flames began to rise from the crumpled bonnet, Roger managing to prize the drivers' door open, dragging the barely conscious man along the carriageway before depositing him on the grass verge, safe distance from the smouldering vehicle.
