Rain's Pov The church service ended, and I quickly grabbed my bag, stepping out of the church. Standing by the roadside, I anxiously waited for a cab. Time was against me, I couldn’t afford to be late for Dad’s birthday party. Twenty minutes later, I arrived home. My eyes caught two white vans parked outside. My brows furrowed in curiosity. None of my dad’s friends could afford such luxury. “Maybe they are from the bank or from Dad's new company?” I shrugged off the thought and went to the garden to pluck some tomatoes, but then I heard a loud scream. My legs froze. “What was that?” I whispered, heart pounding. Dropping my bag, I sprinted toward the house. “Mum! Dad! I heard a scream...are you oka...” My voice caught in my throat as I stepped inside. The scene before me was horrifying. My parents were on their knees, trembling. Dad was drenched in sweat, pleading with an older man dressed in a white suit, calmly sitting on the sofa, a cigarette between his fingers. The smoke from his cigarette entered my nose, and I coughed, covering my nose. On the floor beside Mum, my siblings lay crying in fear. Beside my mum were my siblings lying on the floor crying. “Where is my money!” The old man yelled at my dad. “Please, give me more time, Don Cartel! I’ll pay you back I swear!” Dad begged, clutching the man’s leg. Don Cartel smirked, his eyes cold. He pulled a pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at my mum. “Mum!” I screamed, stood in front of my mum to shield her. “Don’t you dare hurt my mother!” The room fell into silence, then Don Cartel laughed, a cruel, mocking sound. His men joined in until he raised a hand, silencing them. “Who’s this?” he asked, his eyes narrowing. “She’s my firstborn,” Dad answered weakly. Don Cartel studied me, his gaze sharp and calculating. “How old is she?” No one responded. “I said… how old is she?, Speak to me.” He kicked Lewis, my dad hard on his stomach. “She’s… twenty-two,” Dad groaned, clutching his stomach. Don Cartel rose slowly, pacing the room with deliberate steps. Deep in thought like he was doing some calculations. “Ah… Twenty-two. So, this is the child with the heart problem you borrowed money for?” His eyes locked on me, a sinister gleam in them Dad hesitated. “Y-yes.” Without warning, Don Cartel grabbed my jaw, forcing me to face him. His fingers tightened as his eyes raked over me like I was a piece of merchandise. “Interesting.” He turned me around and s*****d my a*s. “Ouch.” I whined. “She has a nice body,” he remarked as he pinched my n*****s. “And her mouth is wide enough to take my cock.” He added, grinning. My heart beating fast, I swallowed hard as he looked at me. His gaze was cold, brutal and intimidating. “She’s off-limits!” Dad pleaded, voice breaking. “Please, Don Cartel! She’s innocent!” “She is more than enough.” “Dad, what is happening?” I asked, looking at my dad with confusion. "Who knew he would hide here in Africa.” Don Carter yelled and punch the wall in anger. “Knee.” He glared at me. I knelt beside my dad. “All these years, I have been searching for you. Did you think you would hide from me forever?” He shot the ceiling. My mum clutched the little ones to herself, as they were crying. “Tell them to shut up or I will kill them!” Don Carter looked at me with a deadly glare, then an idea popped up in his mind. A wicked grin spread across his face. “Why repay me with money… when I could take something far more valuable?” “What?” Dad’s voice trembled. “No, please! Take anything just not her!” But Don Cartel wasn’t listening. He waved at his men. “Take her.” “No! Mum! Dad!” I struggled as two burly men seized me. I had never seen my dad crying this much, I did not know when tears dropped from my eyes. My parents never told me anything about me having a heart disease at a young age or them borrowing money. “When exactly will you pay back, huh.” The man pulled my dad by his hair and punched him on his face. “When you i***t!” He bounced on him, punching him. Two men grabbed me by her arm, leading me out of the door. “Dad, mum…” I cried out. “No you can't take her.” My dad stood up and attacked those men. Dad launched at them, his desperation turning him into a man possessed. He fought with everything he had, punching, kicking, refusing to let go of me. Then, the sound that silenced the world. BANG. Dad collapsed at my feet. Blood pooled beneath him as his lifeless eyes stared at nothing. “DAD!” I screamed, dropping to my knees. “Mum! Help him! He’s not breathing!” I shook his body, willing him to wake up. “No please wake up, daddy.” I cried. Tears streamed down my face as reality crashed down. My dad was gone. I spun toward Don Cartel in blind rage, grabbing his collar. “You killed him! You killed my father!” I scratched his face, drawing blood. “Useless bitch.” Don Carter hit me. The slap came hard and fast, knocking me to the floor. Stars danced in my vision as Don Cartel loomed over me. “Now… where were we?” He turned to my mother, c*****g his g*n. “Over to you. Your choice. I take her or you join your husband in paradise.” Mum’s lips trembled. “Please don't d-do this.” She stammered. “Talk to me!” Don Carter yelled at her. Her eyes darted between her dead husband, my siblings and me. “I don't have patience madam.” Don Carter scratched his hair with his g*n. “I-I will join him…” she whispered. My heart twisted. “Wow what a loyal family.” Don Carter clapped. But then she spoke again, her voice barely audible. “B-but not now. Take her instead.” The world tilted beneath me. “Mum?” My voice broke. “Mum, what are you saying?” Her eyes filled with tears as she looked away. “You’re not my real daughter… Your real parents died in a car accident when you were four. We took you in after that. I’m sorry… but I can’t lose everything because of you.” My heart shattered, what did I just heard, The family I has been living with since all these years aren't my real family? All those love, memories for good years! “B-but I remember when I was a kid, I was playing in the garden with you and dad… Mum please tell me this is a lie.” I pleaded, tears rolled down my cheeks. “That was after the accident, you were four at the time of the accident. That was why you had heart problem. I'm so sorry.” “No mum please stop all this… Mum no!” I cried all my lungs out. My eyes shifted to the lifelessly body of dad. I ran to him and tapped him. “Dad please wake up, tell me mummy is lying… Dad!” I screamed with tears. “Please take her, My husband died because of her, I don't want anything to happen to me or my children.” Mum said, hugging her children tightly. I stumbled back, her words cutting deeper than any knife. The man I called Dad… gone. The woman I called Mum… a stranger. My entire life had been a lie. Before I could process it, Don Cartel’s men dragged me toward the door. I screamed, kicking and clawing, but it was futile. “Mum! Don’t let them take me! Please!” But she didn’t move. She clutched my siblings tighte r, tears rolling down her cheeks as she whispered, “I’m sorry, Rain.” The door slammed shut behind me. And just like that… my world went dark.
