Chapter Two: The Rejection

MARTHA
I ran all the way back home. Not as a wolf but in my human form. I wanted to feel the hurt and pain that strained in my heart. My legs raced on the harsh woods as I carried on in an unknown direction. The fresh dew from moving leaves touched my cheeks, instantly drying my tears as they spilled out.
Adrian and Kate? All together! I cannot believe this betrayal. That was my best friend that did this to me even though she knew how much I love Adrian and how I was preparing for this day. It was supposed to be me, not my best friend.
I wept as I thought about it. Is he that horny that he couldn't wait for this long?
As I could no longer withstand the throbbing pain in my legs and heart, I broke down in tears. Sobbing through the rest of the day in the middle of nowhere but trees and harsh wind.
I don't know what next to do but I decided to attend my birthday party anyway. Dashing through the front door, the party has already fully started and some of them were shocked when they saw my appearance. No one knew when I left the house.
Ignoring their weird stares, I rushed to my room. As soon as I locked the door behind me, I heard someone knocking at it.
"Go away!" I shouted angrily, while my face was in the pillow.
"Martha, it is me, Cole. Please, open the door."
Cole? That is Adrian's most loyal and trusted friend who doubled as his Beta. What does he want with me? I'm sure he must have a hand in this. I walked up to the door, ready to blast at him. But as soon as I opened the door and saw his face, I started crying again.
"Martha, why are you crying? Are you okay?" He looked confused and overly concerned to know about Adrian’s escapade.
"You planned it with him, right?" I still asked him.
"What do you mean?" He sounded puzzled.
"He was cheating on me and you planned it. That's why you were at my house so early. You were watching me so that you would alert him that I was coming, right? Guess what? Your plan failed because I caught him cheating on me with my best friend." I transferred aggression at him.
"I don't know about this, trust me Martha. I will talk to him and make sure that he…"
He was interrupted with the voice of Adrian in the living room.
"Can I have everyone's attention!" He commanded, in his Alpha like tone.
"Maybe he wants to apologize and openly declare you as his mate."
Beta Cole said, trying to comfort me as we went into the living room together. However, I will not let Adrian get off that easily.
When we got there, I was still surprised that Kate could show her stupid face at my party. I wanted to approach her and give her a smack across her face, but Cole sensed what I was about to do and he held me down pacifying me.
"We would like to first celebrate the newest full adult wolf of the pack." He started and an array of applause followed. I didn’t really care about the attention at this moment.
"I know many of you have carried out rumors and investigations whether or not Martha Lockman is my girlfriend and mate. Today, I have come to clarify the air."
He said, taking a few steps towards me. I didn't see the usual warmth his eyes that I am used to seeing as I stared at him.
“I, Alpha Adrian of the Moonstone Pack before every member here today, reject you, Martha, as my mate.” His words became like ice, cutting through the warm air, piercing my already shattered heart, and the room was filled with a lot of gasps.
I felt my knees weak. Even Beta Cole looked surprised.
Cheating on me with my best friend on my birthday is not enough? You still pull this kind of stunt on me on my birthday again? Can you not be crueler than this?
"Silence!" He commanded.
"I have not finished." He said.
The entire pack became quiet again. I turned my stunned gaze to my so-called best friend and saw her smiling devilishly. This is her plan. She is not going to get away with this.
"I have more news to announce."
He announced, proudly.
What more can he do to add to the humiliation that he has caused me on my day?!?
