Chapter Four: Accused

MARTHA
"Martha? Are you okay?"
Alpha Adrian's voice called out, as he drew closer to me. He had not fully entered the kitchen yet.
What…? How? No… no, no, no… My mind was racing as my thoughts became unstable. I kept staring at Kate's body sprawled out on the floor, her once radiant blonde hair now tangled and bloodied.
He stopped when he saw the blood. He opened the door wide and his eyes widened with surprise when he saw Kate.
"Kate!" He cried out.
Her eyes were wide open, staring into nothingness, a pool of blood spreading beneath her from a deep wound on her chest. Beside her body was the knife, gleaming in the soft light of the room.
He looked at the bloody knife beside me and he looked at me. I didn't know what to say. This is incriminating enough.
The damage was already done.
"What have you done, Martha?" He screamed at the top of his voice.
I crouched over Kate's dead body, shaking like a leaf. I can't just imagine what is going on in Adrian's mind right now.
"You killed Kate? How can you do that?!"He thundered.
“I… I didn’t…” I tried to explain but my voice broke. My hands shook uncontrollably as I stumbled away from the dead body.
I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears. The room appeared to close in on me, the walls crushing me as panic clawed at my throat.
The noise that Adrian made attracted the attention of some members of his pack. They barged in the kitchen to see what was going on. They all froze as they saw Kate’s lifeless body and Martha standing beside it.
With the silver knife lying inches away from my feet, many of them concluded that I was the one responsible for Kate's murder.
"I… I can't explain what happened here but I did not kill her. I swear to you, Adrian." I said, pleading to him. Where is Beta Cole when you need him?
"Liar!" Joe shouted.
He has just risen from the rank of omega and now all he wants to do is to raise himself higher and agree with everything that the Alpha does or thinks. He has no brain of his own.
"You are a wicked slut. You stood here a few hours ago and promised that whatever you will do to Kate, it will be so painful that she will not be able to tell the tale. You were planning to kill her all along. I knew it!" He accused me, as others nodded in agreement with him.
Just a few hours ago, I was the jewel of the entire pack that they even came to celebrate with me. Now, I am being shunned by my pack and no one wants to associate with me. So, I had no other option than to plead with Adrian.
"I swear to you, Adrian…"
"That's Alpha Adrian to you, you devil!" Joe interrupted me.
"Alpha Adrian, listen to me. Look at me. You know that I can never do a thing like this. Not even to my best friend. I just spoke empty words because I was angry that you slept with… I mean, because I was bitter. You know that I would never hurt Kate." I was still trying to plead with him; it was then that I remembered the voice that Kate was conversing with in the kitchen earlier on.
"Yes, I remember something. Not something, someone." I said.
"What are you talking about?" He asked, a bit curious.
"There was someone that was speaking to Kate some minutes before I found her dead." I replied.
"Who was that?” He asked, giving me the benefit of doubt.
"I don't know. He has a different scent and I can't recognize his voice. He may not even be from our pack. I didn't see him either but he must have been the one to kill her." I said.
"Liar!" Joe accused me, defending himself.
"I have been the one patrolling here for quite a while now and I did not pick up any scent at all. If there was someone foreign that came in here, I would have known. You killed her. Don’t try to escape from this." He said.
"Are you sure? You have just been raised from the lowest bottom in our pack. I will hate that you are dropped back there." Adrian turned to Joe with anger in his eyes.
"I swear to you, Alpha Adrian. No one came through here. She's trying to throw herself off the suspicion. She is the one that killed Kate." He said and there became a unanimous voice of accusation against me. The voice was louder by the minute.
I didn't bother to defend myself anymore, but I turned my face back to Kate's body. She was quickly getting cold. I can't believe I won't see her smile anymore. I won't see her again after today. There's no way to describe how today is inevitably the worst day of anyone's life.
"Silence!" Adrian raised his hands and everywhere became quiet at the moment.
Alpha Adrian walked to me and stared at me as if I were a stranger. That was when I saw Cole running to the scene too. He is already too late because Adrian is about to pass his judgement.
"You did this to me because I rejected you?" He accused me coldly.
I could no longer say anything to defend myself but to cry silently.
"You know what? I will make you the same promise that you made Kate before you ended her life."
"What?"
Cole was silent enough not to interrupt Alpha Adrian.
"I will come for you so much that you will regret ever knowing me. You will not be able to tell the tales of the horrors you will face when I am done with you." He said to me.
He pointed to two of his able wolves.
"But for now! Take her to prison as justice awaits her."
He ordered as the noise resumed again.
Beta Cole tried to stop them by meeting with Adrian and whispering something to his ears. He was not interested in whatever he said as he carried Kate's lifeless body out of my kitchen. I did not even struggle with them as they took me to the pack's dungeon.
This is just the beginning of my troubles. The story has not yet begun.
