After I finally find the city, I walk through the streets admiring the little shops that line up. In fact, the city is bigger than I expected. I expected that maybe three or four small shops and a traffic light would be there. Although there are not really many traffic lights, but some nice shops that you could probably stroll through, especially during the Christmas season. Unfortunately, the year has not progressed far enough.
Although I noticed that the houses are partly in the center and some meters away from the city, I have not found the school yet and that can be really difficult if you have to go to school the next day.
I open the door to a small boutique. A small bell rings over the door and announces my entrance. The head of a shop assistant turns to me, but I ignore her. It's really annoying to me if someone just comes and tries to cheat me about any products that do not interest me. Then I have to get rid of them and that's something I've always been embarrassed about. I just can not do that kind of thing.
Slowly I am shuffling through the shop trying to hide somehow from the prying eyes of the bawdy shop assistant. I stroke my fingers over the most different fabrics and look at the clothes. Actually very nice. Not quite my taste, but pretty girlish, but you can try something new.
Carefully I take a few things from the clothes racks and walk with them on the arm through the large room. As soon as I pick out a few things, I go to a cabin to try things on. Maybe I like a few things like that so much that I really like them. But I really have to be careful with my money.
Although I did get something from Dad and Grandma, I also want to get some school supplies. That's what I do every year, which is why it has become a tradition. So every time I buy new pens, blocks and whatever else is needed to keep my things tidy this school year. In the end, but that does not work anyway and everything was free. Nevertheless, it is fun to try and is always worth a try.
I stand in the short line that has positioned itself in front of the only cabin that seems to be here, and look around. Most of the others in front of me are definitely older than me. Only one more person seems to be my age.
It's a blond-haired girl, but a few shades darker than my own. Her skin is quite bright and her face is round. As she looks in my direction, I catch a glimpse of her round, green eyes. Although she is not so much smaller than me, there is a small difference. She has as many as I hung a stack of clothes over her arm. This is mainly made up of dresses, T-shirt and any skirts, but at first glance I can say that it somehow suits her.
But she also enters the cabin after a few seconds and from then on, I'm only alone with people who are definitely out of my age group.
It takes another ten minutes for me to finish, but then I push the curtain aside and step inside. I quickly close it and put my bag on a small stool. I hang the clothes on the provided rakes. Then I take off my sweater and throw it somewhere on the floor before I brush over the new piece of fabric.
It is a bright red top, which does not exactly flatter my body shape. I stroke it with my hands and try to tighten it in some places to make it look better, but somehow it does not help.
Quickly I take it off and hang it on the hanger. That definitely falls out of the selection. Next comes a dark blue coat jacket that is much more in line with my style. She even looks okay. Well, I would even say that. The first comes on the "Maybe" pile.
But even the things that follow can not trump that. Ultimately, I decide on the jacket, a white dress that would certainly be suitable for special occasions, and a tight high waist jeans that you can probably put on everything.
I step out of the cabin as soon as I'm fully dressed again, and hang the things I do not want to leave. With the rest, I go to the cashier and put the clothes on the counter. "Next, please," murmurs a chewing gum cashier. I point to the clothes and she takes the things to scan them.
"That'll make twenty dollars," she smirks. I'm trying absently to grab my bag, but there is no bag. My eyebrows go up. Only now I realize that I do not have them at all.
"Hey, I think this is yours," a friendly voice suddenly sounds behind me. Amazed, I turn around. There is the blonde girl, who I noticed before. And indeed she has my forgotten bag in her hand.
A grateful smile appears on my lips: "Oh my God, thank you." She comes straight to me and then stretches out my bag: "Here." I take the bag and take out my money. Immediately I put it to the woman, but do not turn away from the girl: "You really saved my life, you know that?" "People do not call me a certified life-saver," she jokes with a smile.
"This is a great way to start my new life", I do not know why, but the smile that appears on my lips is broad and friendly. "You're new here?", She sounds somewhat shocked, though I'm certainly not the first person ever to move here. "Yeah, I just arrived a few hours ago and got lost straight away", I do not know why I'm telling her that, but somehow it's nice to talk to someone so informally.
"Well then, I'm Quinn Claire and I want to welcome you to our little town", she greets me kindly. Quinn? An interesting name. I follow promptly her example, while the woman at the cashier calculates the change and puts my things in a plastic bag.
I follow him example: "Nice to meet you, Quinn, my name is Olivia Gomez." "Ah, then you're the granddaughter of Melissa Gomez," she seems to think, "You moved to her, or do you live in a house of your own?" "No, we moved to her because she does not get along so well on her own," I tell her. Actually, I would have continued talking, but I interrupt myself after a few seconds. Why am I telling her this? She is completely foreign to me.
"Do you have anything else to get?", She asks me carefully. Apparently, she does not want to offend me. "Yes, some more school supplies, why?", I ask just as hesitantly. "I could show you the city a bit and we could talk a little bit," she looks at the floor.
"That sounds good in itself, but I do not know you at all and really need the day to settle in here with my family," I do not know exactly why I reject, but it feels right. This day is for my family and me, though it would probably be good to find friends before going back to school. But that's the last thing I want right now. I want to spend time with Grandma and Dad and Kiernan.
And although this girl is really friendly and probably has real potential to be a good friend, that's just not important to me. Still, I do not want to get rid of them: "But maybe we'll go to school and you can show me everything here on another day."
Her expression changes. At first she seemed to have been quite downcast when I tried to shake her off, but when she hears my words, she looks at me kindly. One could almost say that she even gives me a smile.
