It was the second week of school. Things were going pretty well. It was tiring, but I got this. I wanted to be a doctor and there wasn't a single pink hair stopping me from that. I decided to study in the library after school so I could finally understand everything that has changed in me.
We were ready to start our different classes. Mine was biology. Somehow, he had chosen biology as well. Even though we were in the same year, I never bumped into him. I haven't seen him in the schoolyard. Anyway, I had the feeling someone was looking at me. Something crazy happened one day. I was late and I was going to my class when my foot slipped and I was certain I would fall. I felt like being held, frozen in time. I remember finding myself grabbing the knob of my classroom door. It was crazy after all, what had happened. I still had the printing of some fingertips over my shirt and a strong woody smell accompanied me the whole day. Anyway, no one came after me in the class. Since I was the school anchor, I asked for access to the school cameras. It was weird because they only showed me walking along the stairs.
Except for that, everything was normal.
The bell rang. We were all in our seats. When I turned to search for something in my bag, there he was. He had his hair in a bun. I don't know how, but he got tanned. He was looking outside the window. He looked worried, like outside of this world. The moment I was closing my bag, he looked at me. He looked at me with wet eyes for just one second and then he was angry, oh God, so angry. The teacher was divided into groups. We would do a small competition during every class so that we could answer questions with a big possibility of being on our final exam. Our teacher divided us. As always, I was against Draven. He was the I-know-all in his mind. I beat him every time, but no one could stop him from bragging that he is the best. He always wanted to be my friend, like I deserved to befriend him. I never gave him a chance. Our teacher told us that we had a new student.
-Before we get started, everyone, we have a new student. Bien is your new friend. He is a little bit shy. Treat him as a great friend. I am sure he will be. Yara, you can teach him a little so he doesn't get left behind.
- But Miss Alara...
-Oh sweetheart. I know you can do it. I know you are preparing a lot of things, but I am sure he is a great listener. And then she winked at me.
- What do you think, Bien?
- Well, I can do it myself, but if you judged this way, I am happy to learn.
- Well, then it is decided. Draven, have you studied today? Just a rhetorical question, my boy. I know you are a great student.
He was not.
The class was lit. I got all the questions right once again. Bien didn't speak to me at all. Every single girl in the class was saying to get his attention. After the class ended, the teacher approached me.
- Yara, sweetheart, you are looking gorgeous this year. You are a great student too. I wish I had a daughter like you.
- Awww
And I hugged her and it felt warm, rosy, and musky. As I was leaving the classroom, I felt a little bit dizzy. Again, I was being held. He was across the room. We were in a red room. Giant bookshelves covered the walls. He was in a suit. He was wounded. He looked angry. The moment I wanted to touch him, he was leaving the classroom.
- Hey girl, did you see a ghost?
- Not now, Ryan. I have to talk to him.
- You mean Bien. Do you like him?
- Stop it, Ryan.
- Hey hot mess, come and meet my cute friend.
- No, Ryan. How the hell do you know him?
- Bien, this is...
-Yara. She is my biology teacher.
-Oh, is she? Yara, girl. You didn't tell me you were in the same class. Well, guys, you can chat, my boyfriend is waiting. Bye.
I decided to hold it together. I liked him a lot. I never wanted anyone more. That was over. I didn't need a boyfriend. I couldn't afford one. I would teach him. That's all. We were friends, as much as I was with any other guy in that year.
- So, Bien, we will have our first session tomorrow at the library. I can't today. I am sorry, I have plans. I hope you can benefit from these extra hours. Just bring the book and your notebook with you. I will prepare everything else.
- You smell different today. Has anything happened?
Well, I could feel my heart in my throat. My ears were making noise. My stomach started to hurt. I decided to use my mother's perfume today. No one noticed because Woman by Versace is a light one. How could he? I decided to practice my I-have-an-answer-that-turns-things-out-intentional.
- Yeah, you're right. I just decided to use some perfume. If you are allergic, tell me. I will spray less tomorrow. Right, so I have to go now. Please be there tomorrow. Oh, give me your phone number in case you forget to come. I am doing this because Miss Alara is busy with the lab. She will check on us now and then.
How in this world could I say that? He came forward, put his phone lightly in my hand, and whispered.
-Give me yours.
- Alright, let's do that. Here is my number. If you won't be there until 3:10 or don't call me, I will leave. Have a great day and see you tomorrow I guess.
As I said so, I left. I even waved at him like it was the most normal conversation I ever had. I was crazy. I didn't know him. He was whispering to me. He was wounded. He could feel my scent. He is perfect. He is cold. He is someone I can't have. Anyway, I did pretty well, I guess. I could feel my face getting warmer and warmer. Thank God I was a brunette (pink hair disappeared). No one could see me blushing.
I had a meeting with Muriel and Orna this afternoon. Anna would tell us everything. I must go home and sleep. Otherwise, my heart could jump out of my chest.
