"What floor?” I looked up to see him waiting to scan my card, sheriff was rubbing his temples, he didn’t seem that old but you could see the job was defiantly aging him faster than he’d liked, under his eyes looked like bruise’s, a tinge of blue in the black, his nails were bitten down to the skin. I passed him to card, trying to push my feelings back down, mum did that when she was nervous her nails always looked like she worked all day to destroy them.
“Aren’t you a bit young to be staying in a penthouse?” The doors opened, and my heart dropped.
Two officers stood on each side of black zipped up hospital bag that lay flat and still on a hospital bed.
“Yeah, yeah, let’s not make a big show of it. Wait till I get back to this floor and I’ll take you down.” I wondered if his temples ever got sore from rubbing them so hard.
“Sorry Sherriff.” The young girl officer said, giving me a strange look as the doors closed; the rest of the elevator ride was more than awkward, I couldn’t count down the floors any faster than I already was.
“Don’t worry, it’s just me being over-cautious, poor old lady, I just don’t want everyone to be spooked out.” Why all the police officers for a little old lady? Did they have that much of a boring life that this was excitement for them? That every cop in town had to rush to the rescue, if he was telling the truth about it not being a big deal, I kind of felt sorry for him, to think that he was in charge of all the commotion
“I hope you don’t make it a habit of hanging out with Woods, chances are you’ll find yourself in trouble sooner or later.”
“Thanks.” I say sprinting my way out in to the lobby the moment it springs open, aware that Astin’s possibly looking through the hole in the door waiting for me to walk through so he can yell at me for taking off, even bigger surprise when he sees who bought me back.
“Don’t mention it kid. Are you staying in this whole thing by yourself?” he gestured to the rooms door.
“No my family is inside I was supposed to be getting coffee but the lines ended up being too long, so I gave up and got lost on my way back, Bianca was nice enough to show me the way back.” I really didn’t like his tone when he said, Wood’s, it was like she was a parasite that he had to contend with because her mum was the mayor of the town, I’m guessing her little antics would be less than petty.
“Well, good night then or morning which ever it is.”
The doors shut, I waited till I seen the numbers on the top go from, seventeen to five before I let the anxiety of the night finally creep in.
