Chapter 7

“Excuse me?” “Marry me,” he said again. Wow. So I didn’t mishear. What kind of prank was this? Was he testing me? Yes… it must be a test. “Of course I’ll marry you, Mr. Vale. I’m ready to go along with whatever you want to make this cooperation a success.” He raised a brow, clearly surprised. I scoffed internally. See? I got it right. I passed his little test. Now he’s convinced of my absolute loyalty. “So, Mr. Vale,” I continued, “can we sign the contract?” He smiled and stood up. “When we come back.” Now I was confused. “Come back from where?” “Didn’t you just agree to marry me? We’re going to get our certificate.” “What?” I nearly screamed. What the hell? He was serious? “You really meant it? You want to get married to me right now?” “Yes. Didn’t you say you’d do anything for the cooperation?” “Y…e…s,” I choked out. “I’m not forcing you, Mrs. Hale,” he said calmly. “You can choose not to come with me. We do live in a law-abiding city.” Like hell I can refuse you and lose the investment. What kind of “I’m not forcing you” is that? Sir, you absolutely are. I stood slowly, grabbing my bag and the contract file. “Of course I’m coming, Mr. Hale. What a privilege it is to receive your proposal.” He smiled and opened the door for me. Such a “gentleman”… with a black heart. One hour later, I was married again. My name stamped right beside his. So this is what they mean by from frying pan to fire. But there was no time to dwell on it. I quickly pulled out the contract. “Can you sign here please, Mr. Vale?” My hands trembled slightly as he signed. I only exhaled when he finished. Yes. Finally. Deal sealed. “So how long is this marriage supposed to last, Mr. Vale?” “How long is a marriage supposed to last?” he asked instead. “I don’t know… forever? But that’s for real marriages. I mean this one.” “This is a real marriage,” he said. “We’ll do everything couples do. And I intend for it to last forever.” “I beg your pardon?” “You heard me.” Yes, I did. Unfortunately. But it made absolutely no sense. I had just signed away my life for a cooperation that was supposed to last five years? Wait. “What do you mean by ‘what couples do’?” “Everything,” he replied. “Kissing, touching, s*x, babies… everything.” The world tilted slightly. Sex? Babies? For a cooperation? This was a scam. A beautifully packaged scam. I cleared my throat. “Mr. Vale, this isn’t what we agreed on. You only said marriage. It’s not fair to—” “Ten years of cooperation, and I’ll double the investment.” My mouth snapped shut. Double the investment? Dear husband… how many kids are you planning? I straightened immediately. “Well, that’s fair. You can drop me off now. I need to return to the company.” “We’re going home,” he replied. “Home? But that’s not the way to my—” I paused as realization hit. “We’re going to your house?” “Our house,” he corrected. “We just got married. We’re taking the rest of the day off.” “But I still have work at the company and—” “That can wait,” he cut in. “I already had my assistant inform Lily. It’s handled.” What the hell. Am I stuck with a bossy husband for the rest of my life? I’m doomed. Still… the company funds were smiling. That was the only consolation right now. I expected an estate, but we didn’t stop at one. Instead, we pulled into the underground parking of a residential skyscraper. A private elevator took us up. He pressed a button labeled P. As the elevator climbed, my palms grew damp. He, on the other hand, looked completely calm. Too calm. What was he thinking? What were we supposed to do at his house this early in the day? Talk? Eat? Play games? The day was still young. We could’ve met after work— Ding. The elevator doors opened, cutting off my thoughts. Alright. Here we go. We stepped into a quiet private floor. Only one door. He swiped it open. I didn’t even get the chance to fully take in my “new home” before the door shut behind us. And then— His lips crashed onto mine.
