Adrian’s POV. I tried to brush it off, I really did. Katherine kept telling me I had nothing to worry about, but Max’s words were stuck in my head like a song I couldn’t stop humming. “You know,” he’d said one evening when we were all together, “Katherine needed someone who understood the pressures of being a mom. It’s a lot to handle.” It was subtle, like everything Max did. He didn’t come right out and say I wasn’t good enough, but it was there—hidden in the words. He was reminding me that Katherine had needed someone before, someone older, someone who had been through the same things she had. And as much as I tried not to let it bother me, it was eating away at me. Was I really what Katherine needed? I loved her, no doubt about that. But maybe Max had a point. He and Katherine
