Chapter 1_ The Night Caroline shouldn't have gone out
The rain started just as Caroline Bennett stepped out of the dorm building. Not heavy rain. Not the kind that forces people to run for shelter. Just a slow, quiet drizzle that made the night feel colder than it should have been. She pulled the sleeves of her hoodie over her hands and glanced back at the glowing dorm windows behind her. Most students were inside. Laughing. Studying. Watching movies. Living normal college lives. Caroline should have been doing the same thing. Instead, she was walking alone toward the woods behind the campus. “Bad idea,” she muttered under her breath. But she kept walking anyway. The forest trail began just past the sports field. At night it looked different from the cheerful path students used during the day. The trees were taller. The shadows were deeper. Every sound felt louder. Caroline checked her phone again. 11:47 PM. “Crystal is going to kill me if she wakes up and I’m not back,” she whispered. Her best friend, Crystal, had fallen asleep an hour earlier while watching some romantic comedy. Caroline had tried to sleep too, but something kept her awake. Restless. Like the night was calling her. It was stupid, really. But the feeling wouldn’t go away. So she grabbed her hoodie and left the dorm. Now she was halfway down the trail, and the campus lights behind her were starting to disappear. The woods swallowed sound. Even the rain seemed quieter here. Caroline wrapped her arms around herself and kept moving. “Just a quick walk,” she told herself. Five minutes in. Five minutes out. Then back to bed. But after a few steps, she heard something. A branch snapping. She froze. Her eyes scanned the dark forest. “Hello?” No answer. Just the whisper of rain sliding down leaves. Caroline exhaled slowly. “Relax,” she whispered. “It’s probably just an animal.” She continued walking. Then she heard it again. But this time it wasn’t a branch. It was a voice. A man’s voice. “Please… don’t…” Caroline stopped so suddenly that her shoes slid slightly in the wet dirt. The voice came from deeper inside the woods. Her heart started beating faster. Someone was out there. Someone who sounded scared. “Hello?” she called. No response. Then— A scream. Not loud. Not long. But sharp enough to send cold electricity through her body. Caroline’s instincts told her to run back to campus. To forget she heard anything. To stay safe. But curiosity pushed her forward. Slowly, carefully, she stepped off the trail and into the thicker part of the forest. The trees grew closer together here. The ground was uneven. She pushed branches aside and moved toward where the sound came from. Her breathing grew heavier. Then she saw them. Two figures. Standing between the trees. One man was on the ground. The other was crouched over him. At first, Caroline thought it was a robbery. Or a fight. But then she noticed something strange. The man on top wasn’t punching. He wasn’t holding a weapon. He was… Biting. Caroline blinked. Her brain refused to understand what she was seeing. The man’s head was buried in the other man’s neck. And there was blood. So much blood. The victim’s hands were weakly pushing against the attacker’s shoulders. “Stop…” the man gasped. The attacker didn’t stop. He drank. Like a starving animal. Caroline’s stomach twisted violently. Her breath caught in her throat. This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t A twig snapped beneath her shoe. The sound was small. But in the silent woods, it might as well have been thunder. The attacker froze. Slowly… slowly… he lifted his head. And turned. Caroline saw his face. Pale skin. Dark hair. Eyes glowing red in the darkness. Blood dripping from his lips. For a moment, neither of them moved. The creature stared at her. Curious. Hungry. Then the man on the ground stopped moving. His arms fell limp. Dead. Caroline stumbled backward. Her entire body went cold. Her brain screamed one word. Run. She turned and sprinted through the forest. Branches scratched her arms. Her shoes slipped in the mud. Behind her Something moved. Fast. Too fast. Leaves rustled violently. Something was chasing her. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She didn’t dare look back. The trail. If she could just reach the trail— A shadow dropped in front of her. Caroline skidded to a stop. The vampire stood there. Blocking her path. He hadn’t run past her. He had leaped. His red eyes studied her face slowly. Like he was deciding something. Caroline tried to scream. But no sound came out. The vampire tilted his head. “You saw,” he said softly. His voice was calm. Almost gentle. But his mouth was still stained with blood. Caroline forced herself to speak. “You… you killed him.” The vampire smiled. Not kindly. “Of course.” He stepped closer. Caroline backed away. “You shouldn’t have come here tonight,” he said. Her back hit a tree. Nowhere left to go. The vampire’s eyes darkened. “You humans are always so curious.” He raised his hand. His fingers were long. Sharp. Like claws. Caroline squeezed her eyes shut. This was it. She was going to die. Then A blur of movement exploded between them. A second figure slammed into the vampire, throwing him several feet across the forest floor. Caroline gasped and opened her eyes. Another man stood in front of her. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark coat soaked in rain. His face was shadowed, but she could see sharp features and intense eyes. The vampire hissed from the ground. “Well,” he said coldly, “look who decided to show up.” The stranger didn’t respond. He simply stared at the vampire. Calm. Dangerous. The vampire wiped blood from his mouth and stood. “This girl isn’t yours,” he said. The stranger finally spoke. “Leave.” Just one word. But it carried a quiet authority. The vampire laughed softly. “You know I can’t do that.” For a moment, neither of them moved. Then the vampire glanced at Caroline again. His smile returned. “Another time,” he said. Before she could blink He vanished. Gone. Like he had never been there. Caroline stared at the empty space. Her legs felt weak. The stranger turned toward her. Up close, she could see his face clearly now. He was young. Maybe early twenties. But his eyes looked older. Colder. Like someone who had seen too much. “Are you hurt?” he asked. Caroline shook her head slowly. Her voice trembled. “That… that thing…” “Yes.” “What was it?” The stranger hesitated. Then he looked directly into her eyes. “A vampire.” The word hung in the cold air. Caroline almost laughed. Because it sounded impossible. Like something from a horror movie. But she had seen the blood. Seen the red eyes. Seen the man die. And the stranger’s expression told her one thing clearly. He wasn’t joking. “You need to forget what you saw tonight,” he said quietly. Caroline blinked. “What?” “For your own safety.” “But someone died!” “I know.” “We have to call the police!” “No.” The answer came too quickly. Too firmly. Caroline frowned. “Why not?” The stranger looked toward the dark forest where the vampire had disappeared. Then back at her. “Because they won’t believe you.” Her chest tightened. “And you will become a target.” “A target for what?” The stranger didn’t answer. Instead, he took a step back. “You should go back to your dorm.” Caroline stared at him. “Wait.” He paused. “Who are you?” she asked. The stranger studied her for a long moment. Then he said quietly, “You’ll find out soon enough.” Before Caroline could ask anything else. He turned and walked into the darkness. And disappeared among the trees. Caroline stood there alone. Rain dripping through the leaves. Heart still racing. Her mind replayed the scene over and over. The blood. The red eyes. The word vampire. Her life had been normal just an hour ago. Now nothing felt normal anymore. Because somewhere in the darkness… A vampire was still out there. And somehow She had the terrible feeling that this was only the beginning.
