unexpected proposal
The black luxury sedan rolled through the iron gates of the Carter estate, its tires crunching over the white gravel driveway.
Isabella Carter leaned her head against the window, exhausted after a long day at university. She slipped off her glasses and rubbed her temples.
"Home at last," she whispered.
As soon as she stepped inside the grand mansion, something felt... different.
The servants stood unusually straight. The atmosphere was tense, almost suffocating.
"Miss Isabella," the butler greeted respectfully. "Your parents are waiting for you in the sitting room."
She frowned.
"Waiting for me?"
"They insisted you come immediately."
Without another question, Isabella made her way toward the luxurious sitting room.
The moment she pushed open the double doors, her footsteps came to an abrupt stop.
Her parents sat together on one sofa.
Across from them was an elderly man dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, his silver hair neatly combed back. His sharp eyes carried the confidence of someone who had spent decades building an empire.
Even before anyone introduced him, Isabella knew exactly who he was.
Richard Kingston.
Founder of the Kingston Group.
The man everyone called the uncrowned king of the business world.
"Good afternoon," Isabella greeted politely.
Richard studied her for a long moment before smiling.
"So you're Isabella."
"I am."
"I've heard a great deal about you."
"I hope only the good things."
A faint chuckle escaped the old man's lips.
"I like your confidence."
Her father cleared his throat.
"Isabella, have a seat."
She obeyed, though curiosity continued to grow inside her.
No one spoke for several uncomfortable seconds.
Finally, Richard broke the silence.
"I'll get straight to the point."
"I've come to ask for your hand in marriage."
...
Silence.
Even the ticking clock seemed to stop.
Isabella blinked once.
Then twice.
"I'm sorry..."
She let out a small laugh, convinced she had misheard him.
"I don't think I heard you correctly."
"You did."
Richard's voice remained calm.
"I want you to marry my grandson."
"Ethan Kingston."
Her smile slowly disappeared.
"I'm still studying."
"My life has barely begun."
"And you expect me to marry a stranger?"
Her mother reached for her hand.
"Sweetheart—"
"No."
Isabella stood.
"I respect you all, but marriage isn't a business contract."
"I don't even know him."
"I have dreams."
"I have plans."
"I'm not marrying someone because two wealthy families think it's convenient."
The room fell silent again.
Richard didn't look offended.
Instead, he nodded slowly.
"I expected that answer."
He rose from his seat.
"The offer will remain open."
"When you're ready, let me know."
With that, he left the room.
The sound of the front door closing echoed through the mansion.
Isabella turned to her parents.
"You knew about this?"
Her father lowered his eyes.
"We believed you deserved the choice."
"And my answer is no."
Without waiting for another word, she walked upstairs.
She shut the bedroom door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a long breath.
"This is ridiculous."
She tossed her handbag onto the bed before opening her desk drawer.
Hidden beneath a stack of notebooks was a worn brown file.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted it.
Across the front, written in bold black letters, were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL
Inside were newspaper clippings, photographs, financial reports, and one faded picture of her late father.
At the bottom lay a single document she had read a hundred times.
Evidence suggests the Kingston family may have been involved.
Isabella stared at the page until her vision blurred.
"I promised you I'd find out the truth, Dad."
A painful smile crossed her lips.
"So this is the opportunity I've been waiting for."
She closed the file with quiet determination.
A few minutes later, she walked back downstairs.
Her parents looked up in surprise.
Richard Kingston had not yet driven away.
He stood near the entrance, speaking with the butler.
"Mr. Kingston."
He turned.
"I've changed my mind."
The old man's eyes narrowed with interest.
"I'll marry Ethan."
"But I have one condition."
A slow smile spread across Richard's face.
"I'm listening."
Outside, thunder rumbled across the evening sky.
Neither of them realized that this single decision would begin a marriage built on secrets...
...and a love neither of them ever expected.
