Fear flooded every fiber of my being. I panicked inside not knowing where to go. I couldn’t go towards my family I mind-linked telling them to go back head home. Then shut it off. Knowing that they would try to still come and not let me fight this alone.
A growl ripped through me warning my family to stay put and the guards to stay put. I knew that I had to run as far and as fast as I could. Deep down I had always known the chances of either of us finding a mate were slim to none. Now that Amos had found his I had to protect Sage and him. I knew I was dead no matter what happened. I couldn’t let them kill Amos too.
I made the first attack I nipped at the guard closest to me. Two others were nearing me. I knew my only chance to lead them away from my family was to enrage them first. I needed to distract them long enough from my family to get to safety.
I let out a howl telling them goodbye and GO!
I looked and saw the sadness in both my father and Amos’s eyes. They didn’t want to go. But knew that with what the guard had said, they wouldn’t stand a chance staying alive together.
As I was being circled by three wolves at once. I felt a bite to my back causing me to turn. I growled, narrowing my gaze. I needed to let them know I meant business. They thought I was outnumbered, but they didn’t know that my father had trained us well.
Every fiber in me pleaded with me to run away. But I needed to stay and fight. I felt my leg go out when another one bite me dragging me down. I was being scratched and bite by all three. I managed to fight back still being able to stand my ground.
I pushed through the pain I had injured one badly that’s when I saw my chance to escape the circle they had formed around me. I took it and began to run. I could hear them running behind me. But I didn’t look back. I just kept running and running.
As darkness fell overhead I knew I would have a better chance to find refuge among the shadows of the trees. I had made some headway from them. I heard a river nearby, I stopped catching my breathe. That’s when I noticed some mud near the edge. I rolled my fur in it hoping it would help to mask my scent and throw off the guards who were near me still.
Once I covered up. I began running again, I didn’t stop until my body collapsed from utter exhaustion. Blackness surrounded me. I just prayed that I would see another day….I wasn’t ready to die.
A growl woke me from my sleep.
SHIFT
A commanding voice demanded as my groggy eyes began to focus. I wasn’t sure where I was. Nothing around me smelled familiar. I realized I must have walked onto another packs territory.
SHIFT
The voice commanded again. I knew it was an alpha I could tell by the tone. My body more awake immediately obeyed the command. I knew I would be completed exposed. I tried hard to cover myself with my hands. I was shaking as the cold air hit me.
“What is your name?” the alpha asked.
I didn’t dare look into the face of the man who had commanded me to shift. I didn’t dare look at anyone or anything. I kept my head down and tried to stop my body from shaking so I didn’t look as weak and helpless and I felt.
I felt a kick to my back as the other person shoved me to the ground.
“The alpha asked you a question. Answer him!”
“My …my name…is Aspen.” Fever making my voice quiver.
I hated how weak I sounded. I wished I could just run away. But I knew that I would be caught and dead if I tried anything. And I knew my body had no more to give in it. The adrenaline from last night had wore off.
“Aspen, why are you on my territory?”
“I…..” was all I could muster.
I didn’t really have an answer. How could I explain that I had run away from the royal guards so I wouldn’t be killed. Then when he asked why would I be killed I’d have to explain that I am a twin. Why would anyone explain that to an alpha they didn’t know or trust? The answer no sane person would. If they didn’t have a death wish. And while I had wanted to die last night to protect my family. I didn’t really want to die.
Luckily he didn’t press me for anymore details. That’s when I looked up for the first time. My breathe caught in my throat. I couldn’t move, the most amazing smell hit me. That’s when I knew even before the words escaped my mouth.
Mate . . .
