Chapter 2

1108 Words
Our whole lives all we had ever known was from our father, Gillian, isolated us from everyone.  We had never met our mother Esme but we had heard many stories of her beauty, bravery and kindness.  She would never leave anyone harmed and believed in helping all those around her.  Even if it meant putting herself in the crosshairs of getting hurt.  Esme died during childbirth.  That is typically for a female wolf carrying more than one pup.  It has become rare for more than one pup to be born at a time.  Some say it’s because we’ve lost the moon goddess’s favor and are being punished to slowly die out.  Others say that twins carry a rare power that makes them more powerful together then any alpha, and together they can destroy all kingdoms and dominate the entire werewolf community. But of course all of these are legends and no factual proof to back it up.  Nevertheless the royal alphas banned packs together to wipe out all twins from existence.  And that included us. Our home was isolated it sat along a long winding dirt road hidden by trees.  It was more of a shack then a house but it was the only home we had ever known. He told us to never trust anyone. Because anyone you trust can be turned against us and be used as an asset to our demise.  To find us and kill us. We were unable to be tracked before turning.  But Gillian warned us that hunters would be after us trying to kill us after we turned.   Killing us in the royals mind was the only way to make sure we never took over.  The only other wolves we had ever met were Sage and her grandmother Lilian.  Lilian was the one who helped our father find refuge after our mother died and when we were first born.  Lilian helped us get supplies from the village in order to help keep our identity a secret she would say we were her grandchildren visiting. Sage was my age she visited her grandmother every summer.  Her and I became best friends she was the only female I could really talk to. I loved Lilian but I never knew what exactly she would tell my father. So it was best to not confide in her.  Sage’s seventeenth birthday was only a few days after ours so I knew she would be turning soon. She would be happy that I finally turned. I couldn’t wait to run with her in the woods if our father let us that is.  A FEW DAYS LATER Sage’s birthday was here I couldn’t wait to celebrate with her tonight and have her transition into a wolf.  A knock from the door told me Lilian and Sage had arrived.  We would be celebrating here since it was isolated and no humans would happen upon a werewolf.  Sage looked beautiful her fiery red hair in an updo, she wore a light green dress that matched the color of her eyes.  “You look beautiful” a smile spread across my face. Sage blushed, “Thank you, so do you.” “No I don’t.” Twiddling my thumbs knowing I could never look that beautiful. I had never in my life owned anything nice. I was wearing jeans and a ratty t-shirt I found in a dumpster.  Since we had to use all our money for food we didn’t have any for the finer things like new clothes. So, we had to find what we could. “Come here Aspen, I have something for you.” Sage handed me a bag I opened it and gasped. Tears began streaming down my face. This was one of the nicest things anyone could have done for me. I knew she must have been saving up for it for months.  “I know this is a special time for both of us. And I wanted you to be celebrated to. Since you didn’t really get to for your changing ceremony. I wanted you to feel beautiful.” “Sage, thank you.” Bringing her into a hug. I slipped into the lilac dress it hugged my body in all the right places and fit like a glove.  My midnight black hair cascading down my back. I was putting my contacts in when Sage grabbed my hand stopping me. “Don’t. You look beautiful just the way you are. You shouldn’t have to hide what makes you….you.” I took a breathe and decided she was right. This was a special moment for us and I needed to be proud and happy. Even if that meant me being a little uncomfortable with myself. It made her happy and that was what was important. “Are you ready.?” I asked. “I’m not really sure how ready you can be? You can only prepare so much. But you can’t really fully know how you’re going to react until it happens and the change occurs.” I knew she was right. The same was true for me. I had read countless textbooks and tried to prepare myself, mentally and emotionally. But ultimately it wasn’t until that excruciating first turn where it feels like all your bones are breaking that you are fully ready. It’s easy to transition now.  I don’t have to think about it which is what my father told me would happen. He said the more often you transition the more fluid it becomes. The moon was on the rise everyone had transitioned into their wolf state waiting for Sage’s transition.  Sage stepped into the middle of our circle as the moon was overhead.  She stripped down to nothing and waited.  That’s when I heard it the first crunch of her bones twisting and moving. I had to look down and away, I couldn’t watch my best friend go through this pain.  A howl erupted from her.  I looked up to see an auburn wolf with glowing green eyes in front of me. She was as beautiful in wolf form and she was in human form. That’s when I saw it and heard it. Amos howled in unison with her.  They looked into each others eyes and began circling each other.  He ran off and she followed close behind.  They were mates my best friend and brother.
