The queen came onto the balcony, this time smiling. Her gaze settled on Melissa first, warm and radiant. “You look radiant, perfect for tonight.
Then her eyes flicked to me.
“Please do the same for Destiny.”
I snorted at that, what did the queen think I was? Some sort of doll for her amusement? Probably.
It was the first time both of us had been unchained at the same time with no punishment involved. We didn’t hesitate. We both ran and hugged one another, and of course Jake had to ruin it. “Please tell me you two are going to kiss.”
Melissa rolled her eyes, grinning, but I grabbed a makeup brush from the makeup bag and launched it at Jake. It hit him in the chest.
“Still feisty as ever,” he winked.
Melissa distracted me from grabbing something else to throw and pulled me down onto the floor to sit. “Sit still,” she said, already reaching for the makeup bag. I didn’t know how long it had been, only that it was long enough that I had pins and needles and my legs felt numb.
When Melisa was finished, she held up the small mirror, so I could see. My long black hair had been brushed and straightened, making it silky and soft as it fell down my back. My makeup looked perfect, Melissa had given me the cat eye look I had always wanted with the wing, and a light cream glimmery eyeshadow and mascara.
The foundation was lightly applied but still made my skin look flawless and soft, the contour showing off my high cheekbones. My lipstick was a nude lip color with a shimmer to it and glossy.
I didn’t have time to say thank you because Jake opened his big mouth. “ Damn. very sexy ladies, you should both makeout, I’ll watch, no touching promise.”
I ignored him this time which was wise because the queen chose that moment to walk in with Hunter behind her.
I tried to ignore how good he looked in trousers and a white shirt buttoned up halfway, clinging to his body just enough to show the lines of his chest, his arms, the strength in him. His sleeves were rolled up halfway to his elbows.
Clearly, the queen had made him dress up and she must have perfected the already naturally tousled look his golden blonde hair had.
He looked—
Dangerous.
Beautiful
Untouchable.
His eyes found me, and bit his lower lip as he traveled them slowly over me. My breath caught. Heat rushed to my face, but I was so glad he couldn’t see it, and that I didn’t smile because he mouthed, “still ugly.”
I scowled at him, which only made him smirk.
I couldn’t even call him ugly back with his unnaturally angelic good looks, unblemished skin, sculpted face and those golden flecked, violet eyes with gold edging, it would make me sound childish and petty because it was so untrue.
The queen distracted everyone when she spoke. “My boys, do bring our lovely ladies into the garden.”
Me and Melissa frowned in confusion. Garden?
Jake took Melissa’s hand gently, and they followed the queen out of the room. Hunter, of course, grabbed me roughly and pulled me out. I rolled my eyes but said nothing.
We went outside, and the shimmery thing happened, just like when we had first arrived.
I knew we were back in the real world, the cool air smelt great and felt soothing as it brushed through my hair. Looking around I saw a garden, but it seemed to be a private garden on private land because no other homes or signs of life could be heard or seen, letting me know that screaming would be pointless. No one would hear.
The garden was lovely with rose bushes all around, freshly cut grass and an archway with vines and roses that climbed along the edges, their scent thick in the air. But something about it felt wrong, it was starting to look more sinister because through it I could see two stone slabs with candles all around, they flickered unnaturally in the rising wind. Chains were fixed at the top and bottom for hands and feet.
My stomach dropped and my palms became clammy.
Both of us were made to lay down on the slabs and then both our hands and feet were chained like I’d known.
The moon was full and looked huge and burning orange against the dark night sky.
The queen wasted no time, smiling, she began chanting in some language I had never heard of. Her words twisted through the air, sharp and heavy, vibrating against my skin like something alive.
She circled both me and Melissa, slow and deliberate, like a priestess at an altar. Then she produced the jar she had used to collect both mine and Hunter’s fluids after I had lost my virginity to Hunter.
I tried not to gag when the queen dipped her fingers in and made a sign of some kind on my forehead with it, and then Melissa’s.
Next she withdrew a blade which set Melissa off screaming and yanking on the chains, but the queen never stopped smiling or chanting, she cut deep into her own palm so that blood dripped heavily. She went over to Hunter next, who held out his hand for her, she cut him too and then Jake. Their blood mixed together in her hands. Dark. Thick. Powerful. Of the two brothers only Jake looked a little concerned. The queen smeared the blood on both myself and Melissa’s bodies.
The wind picked up suddenly, howling. The air felt strangely, thick, hot and heavy, something was happening.
Melissa kept yanking on the chains and calling out to Jake, who now looked scared for her.
The queen didn’t go to Melissa first, though, she came to me. I knew fighting was pointless, so I lay still, refusing to show fear. I didn’t fight. Didn’t scream. Didn’t beg. I turned my head and looked straight at Hunter, he was watching coldly, nothing showed on his face.
I grinned at him and flipped him the finger, “see you in hell, b.itches.” The queen raised the blade and then plunged down, but she never made contact.
Hunter had the queen’s wrist gripped in his hand, tight and unmoving. “Hunter, let go of me at once!” She growled. He grabbed her face in both his hands and something happened, something so horrific that neither me or Melissa could bring ourselves to scream.
The queen’s face, no, her eyes popped then melted, and then her whole face began to melt and burn, the skin sliding off like melted candle wax.
Hunter began chanting in that same language, but different. Stronger. Commanding. I figured out pretty quickly that it must be demon tongue. Jake was silent throughout, but then he quickly went up beside Hunter and joined in. I didn’t know what it was, wind, something else, but the air seemed to tear open. Wind screamed through the garden, it ripped the remains of the queen away violently until she disappeared and everything grew silent and still again.
