THE LOST GIRL
Chapter One: The Lost Girl. The rain fell in relentless sheets, washing the streets in silver and shadow. Amara darted through the empty alleys, her heart hammering in rhythm with the thunder above. She didn’t know why she ran. Only that she had to. Somewhere deep inside, a voice whispered danger, a caution she could neither see nor understand. The city had always seemed too loud, too bright, too full of people who looked but never saw. Yet tonight, in the quiet turmoil of rain and darkened streets, it felt as if even the city itself had abandoned her. She shivered, pulling her coat tighter around her thin frame, her wet hair plastered to her cheeks. Every turn she took felt wrong. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward her, grasping at her heels. And yet, she couldn’t stop. She ran past flickering streetlights and closed shops, past the empty park where swings swayed in the wind as if moved by invisible hands. Her breath came in sharp, ragged bursts, and her legs burned with exhaustion, but fear propelled her forward. Then, in the middle of a deserted square, the world seemed to pause. The rain softened to a drizzle, and a strange, soft light appeared at the far end. It was faint, ethereal, like a candle flickering through fog. Amara hesitated. Every instinct screamed to run, yet something — curiosity, hope, or sheer defiance — drew her closer. The closer she got, the more she realized the light wasn’t ordinary. It pulsed gently, almost like a heartbeat, casting patterns on the wet pavement. She could feel it resonating with her chest, syncing with the rapid beats of her own heart. Tentatively, she reached out her hand, and the air around her seemed to vibrate. Before she could comprehend what was happening, the ground beneath her shifted. It wasn’t solid anymore, but soft and pliable, like walking on water or thick mist. Panic surged, but it was too late. The next moment, the world spun violently around her, and she fell forward into darkness. Amara opened her eyes to find herself in a place that defied reason. The sky glowed a perpetual twilight, painted in colors she had never seen before — deep violet, molten gold, and streaks of shimmering silver. The ground beneath her feet was not dirt or pavement but a glass-like surface that reflected her own image in sharp clarity. Strange islands floated in the distance, connected by bridges of luminous light that seemed both fragile and infinite. She tried to speak, but no words came. Only a low hum vibrated through the air, wrapping around her chest and head like an unseen cloak. The feeling was disorienting, almost magnetic, drawing her toward one of the bridges. She glanced back the way she had fallen, only to see… nothing. No city, no street, no rain — only the endless expanse of this surreal world. Fear rose sharply. She was alone. Completely alone. And yet, a strange pull urged her onward. With cautious steps, she walked toward the nearest bridge, the light beneath her feet flickering like the pulse of some living creature. As she reached the center, the hum became a voice — soft, distant, but unmistakable. “Amara…” it called, echoing through the space around her. Her breath caught. She had never heard that voice before, yet it sounded intimate, as if it had always known her. “Who’s there?” she whispered, her voice trembling. The voice did not answer with words. Instead, a shadow moved at the edge of her vision — tall, indistinct, and gliding with impossible speed. Every instinct screamed danger, but Amara’s curiosity held her rooted. The shadow halted a few meters away, and she noticed now that the air around it shimmered, like heat over a desert road. “You’ve come,” it said at last, its voice both warm and commanding. “You do not yet know why, but your journey has begun.” Amara’s chest tightened. “Journey? What… what do you mean?” The shadow did not answer immediately. Instead, it gestured toward the nearest floating island. “This world is not yours… not yet. You have wandered lost for too long. Here, you will find what has been missing, what you have been searching for — and what you have feared to face. Step forward, and the path will reveal itself.” Her heart raced. Fear, wonder, and an unexplainable longing battled inside her. Something about the strange, glowing world called to her — a promise, a challenge, and a warning all at once. Amara took a deep breath. She could turn back, return to the familiar city streets, and forget this strange, impossible place. But a part of her — the part that had always felt different, that had always wondered about what lay beyond ordinary life — stirred and whispered: Step forward. You belong here. With trembling legs, she stepped onto the luminous bridge. The moment her foot touched the light, the bridge pulsed beneath her weight, sending a ripple of energy through her body. She stumbled but did not fall. Looking ahead, she saw the first island looming close, glowing softly in shades of gold and violet. Strange plants with leaves like spun glass swayed in a breeze she could not feel, and tiny, floating orbs of light drifted lazily across the surface. Every instinct screamed for her to run, yet she pressed forward. Each step made the bridge beneath her glow brighter, as if acknowledging her courage. Somewhere deep in her chest, a small ember of hope sparked. Perhaps she was not completely lost after all. Perhaps this world held answers, or at least a chance to find them. The shadow remained at the edge of the bridge, its shape shifting, flickering like smoke. “Every path has trials,” it said. “Every step will test you. You may fail, and you may falter. But only by walking forward will you discover who you are — and what you are meant to become.” Amara swallowed hard. Her fear had not vanished, but determination surged in its place. She did not know what lay ahead, and yet, she took another step, and then another. With each movement, the impossible world around her seemed to embrace her, the glowing light pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat. She glanced back once, toward the empty void where the city had been. Gone. No traces of her old life remained — only this luminous world, this strange path, and the whisper of her own name in the wind. And then she realized something that both terrified and thrilled her: she was finally on her own journey. Amara stepped forward, fully into the unknown.
