Blurb

When a staged body appears along the Arkansas River, sixteen‑year‑old Caleb Rourke is the first to see what Tulsa police cannot: the pattern. For months he’s tracked disappearances no one else believed were connected. Now the killer has left a message—and Caleb is the only one who understands it.

What begins as a desperate attempt to be taken seriously spirals into national attention as Caleb uncovers the detail that cracks the case wide open. Overnight, he becomes a media sensation, a prodigy, and a problem for the detectives who can’t keep him away from their crime scenes.

But fame has a price.

The killer he exposed isn’t finished. He’s watching Caleb. Studying him. Leaving symbols only the boy can decode. And as the city grows more terrified, Caleb realizes the truth: he hasn’t just solved part of the puzzle.

He’s become part of it.

PRELUDE — The First Pattern
He always chose the river. Not because it hid things, but because it revealed them. The Arkansas River didn’t keep secrets. It carried them—slowly, patiently—until someone finally looked closely enough to understand. Tonight, the water was high and restless, slapping against the concrete embankment in uneven rhythms. He liked that. Chaos made order easier to see. The girl lay exactly where he wanted her, exactly how he wanted her. Arms straight. Legs aligned. Shoes pointing north, toward the city lights that shimmered like distant fires. He knelt beside her and adjusted the left shoelace, tightening the final loop with a practiced tug. The knot mattered. The knot was the message. He whispered to her, though she couldn’t hear him anymore. “You’re part of something now. Something better than what you were.” The wind shifted, carrying the faint hum of traffic from Riverside Drive. He listened for sirens—none yet. Good. He still had time. He placed a small chalk symbol on the concrete beside her heel. A spiral, tight and perfect. The first mark in a sequence only one kind of mind would ever notice. A mind hungry for patterns. A mind desperate to matter. He stood, brushing dirt from his hands, and looked out over the river. The water reflected the moon in broken pieces. He wondered who would find her first. A jogger. A fisherman. Maybe a patrol car cutting through the early morning quiet. It didn’t really matter. What mattered was who would understand. He’d been watching the boy for months—quiet, strange, always scribbling in his notebook, always listening to things he shouldn’t. The boy reminded him of himself, once. Before he learned that the world didn’t reward curiosity. It punished it. But maybe the boy was different. Maybe he’d see the knot. Maybe he’d see the pattern. Maybe he’d see him. The killer smiled, a small, private thing, and stepped back from the body. The river hissed against the rocks, urging him to leave before dawn. He whispered one last thought into the night, a promise carried on the humid Tulsa air. “Let’s see if you’re paying attention, Caleb.” Then he vanished into the darkness, leaving the river to deliver the message.
