A Family’s Betrayal

Richard Romano had spent thirty years building his company. He had started with a small office, two employees, and a dream. Now Romano Industries occupied an entire building in the heart of Manhattan. But lately, the numbers had stopped making sense. Richard sat behind his desk, staring at the documents scattered before him. Debt. Loans. Failed investments. Every page seemed worse than the last. He rubbed his forehead and leaned back in his chair. His company was drowning. And he was the only one who knew how deep the water had become. A knock sounded. "Come in." Catherine walked into the office carrying two cups of coffee. She placed one beside him. "You've been in here for hours." Richard didn't look up. "I'm busy." "You're worried." "I'm fine." Catherine gave a small smile. "You've never been good at lying to me." Richard finally looked at her. "How much do you know?" "Enough." She took the chair opposite his desk. "I saw the bank letters." His expression changed. "You went through my things?" "They were sitting on the dining table." Richard looked away. Catherine folded her hands neatly on her lap. "How bad is it?" "Bad." "How bad?" Richard exhaled. "If I don't find the money within three months, the banks will take everything." Catherine's eyes widened. "The company?" "The company. The house. Everything." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Catherine asked quietly, "What about Valessa?" Richard's eyes immediately hardened. "What about her?" "She's your daughter." "I know." "She has access to money." Richard shook his head. "Valessa doesn't have enough to save the company." Catherine's lips curved slightly. "I wasn't talking about her money." Richard frowned. "What are you talking about?" Catherine leaned forward. "Her." Richard stared at her. "Catherine..." "There are families who would pay a fortune for an alliance with the Romanos." "She's my daughter." "And she's twenty-three, beautiful, educated, and unmarried." Richard stood abruptly. "No." Catherine remained seated. "You haven't even heard what I was going to say." "I don't need to." "Then listen." Richard walked toward the window. Outside, Manhattan continued moving as though his entire world wasn't falling apart. Catherine's voice followed him. "Do you know who has recently been looking for a wife?" Richard turned. He already knew the answer. "Dario Lorenzo." The name alone made his stomach tighten. Everyone knew Dario Lorenzo. The billionaire businessman. The mafia king. The man whose enemies rarely lived long enough to regret crossing him. "No." Richard's voice was firm. "Absolutely not." Catherine sighed. "Why?" "Because he's dangerous." "So?" "So I won't send my daughter into a marriage with a man people call the Devil." Catherine studied him carefully. "You don't seem to mind sending your company into bankruptcy." Richard's face tightened. "Don't manipulate me." "I'm not." She stood and walked toward him. "I'm being practical." "Valessa isn't a business deal." "No," Catherine said softly. "She's your daughter." She paused. "And she's the only person who can save everything you've spent your life building." Richard stared at her. "You want me to sell my daughter." "I want you to save your family." "I said no." Catherine nodded slowly. "Of course." She picked up her handbag. "Think about it." She reached the door. Then stopped. "Just remember that when the banks come for everything, Valessa will still have her education, her beauty, and her future." Richard frowned. "And?" Catherine looked back at him. "Zoe won't." The door closed. Richard stood completely still. That night, he couldn't sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same thing. His company collapsing. His employees losing their jobs. His home being taken. His family's name becoming a joke. And then he remembered Valessa. His little girl. The child he had once promised to protect. He hated himself for what he was considering. But desperation had a way of making terrible decisions look reasonable. Across town, Zoe sat on her bed while her mother paced around the room. "So?" Zoe asked. Catherine stopped. "He's considering it." A smile spread across Zoe's face. "Really?" "He hasn't agreed yet." "He will." Catherine looked at her daughter. "You sound very confident." "I know Dad." Zoe picked up her phone. "For years, Valessa has had everything." Her fingers tightened around the device. "She's always been smarter than me. Prettier than me. Everyone likes her." Catherine said nothing. "Even when she does nothing, she wins." Zoe looked at her mother. "But this time..." Her smile slowly returned. "...she's going to lose." Catherine sat beside her. "And if Dario kills her?" Zoe's expression didn't change. "Then she won't be our problem anymore." Catherine stared at her daughter. For the first time, she realized just how much resentment Zoe had been carrying. The following morning, Dario stood inside the private boardroom of Lorenzo Global Holdings. Six executives sat around the table. No one spoke. Dario placed a file in front of him. "The Romano Industries acquisition." One of the executives cleared his throat. "We've reviewed the proposal." "And?" "The company is heavily indebted." "I know." "But their international contracts are valuable." Dario leaned back. "Continue." "If we acquire Romano Industries, we gain access to their European distribution network." "How much?" "Approximately six hundred million in annual revenue." Dario's eyes narrowed slightly. "Interesting." Luca stood beside him. "There is another problem." Dario looked at him. "The Romano family has connections to the Bellucci organization." The room became silent. The Bellucci family was one of Dario's oldest enemies. "How strong are the connections?" "We don't know yet." Dario's fingers tapped once against the table. "Find out." Luca nodded. "There is something else." Dario waited. "The Romano family has a daughter." Dario raised an eyebrow. "Valessa Romano." A photograph was placed in front of him. Dario looked down. A young woman stared back at him. Hazel eyes. Long brown hair. A calm expression. She didn't look frightened. She didn't look like someone who belonged in the world Dario knew. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he picked up the photograph. "Who is she?" "Richard Romano's eldest daughter." "And the second daughter?" "Zoe Romano." Dario glanced at the photograph again. "Why are you showing me Valessa?" Luca hesitated. "Because the Romano family has apparently been discussing a marriage alliance." Dario's expression hardened. "With whom?" "With you." Silence. Dario slowly lowered the photograph. A marriage. He almost laughed. His family had been trying to kill him for years, rival families were waiting for an opportunity to attack, and now someone wanted to hand him a bride. Convenient. Too convenient. "Find out everything about Valessa Romano." Luca nodded. "Everything?" Dario's eyes remained on the photograph. "Her childhood. Her education. Her friends. Her family. Every person she's ever trusted." He paused. "And find out why the Romano family is suddenly interested in becoming connected to me." Luca took the file. "Understood." Dario looked at Valessa's photograph one last time. He didn't know it yet, but the woman staring back at him was about to walk straight into his carefully controlled world. And once she did... Nothing would ever be the same.
