THE DEVIL
Fear wasn't an emotion. It was a man. His name was Dario Lorenzo. Some people built empires with intelligence. Others built them with wealth. Dario Lorenzo built his with blood. At only thirty-one, he had become one of the youngest and most influential CEOs in the world. Lorenzo Global Holdings stood at the top of the corporate ladder, controlling luxury hotels, technology firms, shipping companies, pharmaceutical industries, and real estate worth billions. The media adored him. Investors worshipped him. Employees admired him. To the world, he was a visionary businessman whose success came from discipline and brilliance. But once the sun disappeared behind the skyline, the businessman vanished. The Devil emerged. The Lorenzo Mafia had ruled the underworld for decades, and under Dario's leadership, its influence stretched across continents. Politicians owed him favors. Criminals feared his name. Entire organizations had fallen because they underestimated him. He wasn't known for shouting. He wasn't known for making threats. He simply acted. And everyone knew that once Dario Lorenzo made a decision, there was no changing it. Rain poured relentlessly over Manhattan. Inside the top floor of the Lorenzo Global headquarters, silence filled the luxurious office. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the glittering city below while flashes of lightning occasionally illuminated the room. The scent of aged whiskey, polished oak, and expensive leather lingered in the air. Dario stood with one hand tucked into his pocket, his broad shoulders straight beneath a perfectly tailored black suit. His white shirt was crisp, the top button left undone, and his black tie hung loosely around his neck after another exhausting day of meetings. His sharp jawline was clean-shaven. His dark hair was neatly styled. Cold gray eyes reflected the storm outside. He looked less like a businessman and more like a king surveying the kingdom he had conquered. No one would ever guess that the same man who negotiated billion-dollar mergers during the day signed death warrants before midnight. A knock echoed through the office. "Come in." The heavy wooden door opened, revealing Luca Moretti. Unlike everyone else, Luca never feared entering Dario's office. They had grown up together, trained together, and survived more gunfights than either cared to remember. Loyalty wasn't something Dario questioned when it came to Luca. It was something that had been proven with blood. "The shipment arrived safely," Luca reported. "And the informant?" Dario asked without turning around. "We found him." "Alive?" "For now." Dario's reflection in the glass remained motionless. "Where is he?" "In Warehouse Twelve." A brief silence settled over the room. Luca hesitated before speaking again. "He's asking for a chance to explain." Dario slowly turned around. One glance from those icy eyes was enough to make seasoned men lower their heads. "Did I ask for an explanation?" "...No." "Then bring him." Luca gave a slight nod before leaving the office. Minutes later, the doors opened again. Two heavily armed guards dragged a middle-aged man across the marble floor. His expensive navy-blue suit was torn. Blood stained the front of his shirt. His lip was split. One eye had swollen shut. The moment his gaze landed on Dario, whatever hope remained inside him disappeared. "P-Please... Boss..." The guards forced him onto his knees. The man burst into tears. "I have children." Dario walked toward him with slow, measured steps. Each click of his polished shoes against the marble echoed through the silent office like the ticking of a clock counting down to an execution. He stopped directly in front of the trembling man. "Do you know what disappoints me the most?" The man lowered his head, unable to answer. "I've served you for twelve years." "You did." "I've always been loyal!" "Were." That single word struck harder than any punch. "I made one mistake." Dario tilted his head slightly. "No." His voice remained calm. "You made one choice." "They threatened my family." "So have they threatened many others." "They would've killed my wife." "And because of your decision..." Dario said quietly, "...six of my men are dead." Silence swallowed the room. Not one of the guards dared to breathe too loudly. Dario slipped a hand into his pocket and pulled out an old silver pocket watch. Its surface was scratched with age. It had belonged to his late father. The only possession Dario had kept after burying him. He opened the watch. Looked at the time. Then closed it. Click. The sound echoed through the office. "Do you know why the Lorenzo Empire still stands?" The man shook his head. "Because everyone understands one rule." Dario leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "If loyalty has a price..." His expression turned colder. "...then it was never loyalty." The room fell deathly silent. He straightened. "Luca." Luca already knew. He handed Dario a silenced pistol. The man screamed. "No! Please! Please, Boss! Give me another chance!" "I already gave you twelve years." A muted gunshot echoed through the office. The body collapsed onto the marble floor. Without another glance, Dario handed the pistol back. "Dispose of him." "Yes, Boss." Within seconds, the guards carried the body away. The office looked untouched. As though death had never entered. Dario returned to the window. Below him, thousands of people hurried through the rain. They laughed. Worked. Fell in love. Argued over meaningless things. Completely unaware that the man watching them could destroy lives with a single phone call. His phone buzzed. The caller ID displayed only one name. Grandfather. For the first time that evening, Dario's expression softened. He answered immediately. "I'm on my way." Miles away, inside the historic Lorenzo estate, a different meeting had already begun. Around a long mahogany table sat the people who shared Dario's surname. His uncles. His cousins. His aunt. Every smile concealed hatred. "As long as Dario breathes," one of the uncles said coldly, "none of us will ever inherit this empire." "We've tried assassins." "We've tried poison." "We've even bribed members of his security." "And yet," another man muttered, "...he survives everything." The oldest among them slowly slid a file across the table. "We've been attacking the king." He smiled darkly. "It's time we attacked his future instead." The file opened. Inside was a photograph. A young woman with beautiful hazel eyes. A fearless smile. Completely unaware that powerful men were studying her face. One of them frowned. "Who is she?" The old man smiled. "Her name..." He tapped the photograph with one finger. "...is Valessa Romano." And before the week was over... Her life would belong to the Devil.
