The road that watches

332 Words
Adah ran barefoot into the night. The cold air hit her face as she dashed out of the house, her heart pounding wildly. She didn’t look back. She couldn’t. Behind her— Voices. Not loud… but close. “She’s outside.” “Don’t lose her.” Tears blurred her vision as she sprinted down the empty street. The whole neighborhood was silent, like the world itself was asleep… or watching. Her phone was gone. No light. No help. Just darkness. She slowed down, gasping for breath, and hid behind a parked car. Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she tried to stay quiet. Then— A streetlight above her flickered. Once. Twice. Then it went off. Adah froze. Another streetlight ahead flickered too. Then another. One by one… the lights began to die, moving closer to her. Like something was coming through the darkness. “No… no…” she whispered, backing away slowly. Then she heard it. Footsteps. But this time… they weren’t normal. They echoed… like they were coming from everywhere at once. She ran again. Faster. Harder. Her legs burned, but she didn’t stop until she saw it— A taxi. Parked by the roadside. Engine off. Door slightly open. She hesitated. “What if—” Behind her, the darkness shifted. She didn’t think twice. She jumped into the taxi and slammed the door shut. “Drive! Please just drive!” she shouted. The driver didn’t move. Her heart dropped. Slowly… he turned his head. His eyes were completely black. “You shouldn’t have left the house, Adah.” Adah screamed and tried to open the door— Locked. The engine suddenly started on its own. The car began to move. Fast. Her phone—lying on the seat beside her. But she dropped it. The screen lit up. A new message appeared. “Running only makes it worse.” Adah looked up— The road ahead was gone. Just darkness. And the car kept speeding into it.
