Chapter 2

He carried her effortlessly, her struggles almost laughably ineffective against his unyielding strength. The city streets whirred by in a blur of shadows and streetlights, but Elena had no sense of where he was taking her. Her heart hammered against her ribs, her mind racing through a storm of thoughts, each one as panicked and desperate as the last. "Put me down!" she screamed, thrashing against him. "You can't do this! Let me go!" He didn't answer. His silence was somehow worse than anything he could have said, a chilling indifference that made her blood run cold. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he stopped beside a sleek black car parked in a darkened alley, remote enough that no one would hear her if she screamed. He opened the door and shoved her into the passenger seat with a roughness that knocked the breath out of her. Before she could scramble back out, he slammed the door shut and circled to the driver's side, slipping in beside her and locking the doors with a soft, final click. "Where are you taking me?" Her voice was a mixture of fear and fury, and she shot him a glare that she hoped masked the terror that was starting to creep up her spine. "Someplace safe," he replied, his tone infuriatingly calm. He turned the key, and the engine roared to life, sending a faint vibration through the car. "Safe? I don't think that's the right word," she snapped, casting a frantic look at the door handle, but it was locked from his side. "I don't even know who you are!" He shot her a glance, his eyes gleaming in the dim light of the dashboard. "You'll know soon enough." She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms to keep from shaking. "This is insane. You can't just-kidnap someone and expect them to go along with it!" He tilted his head, a faint smirk playing at the corner of his mouth. "Can't I?" The calmness in his voice made her stomach twist. He acted as if this was all so normal, as if she was the one overreacting. Her fingers fumbled for the pepper spray again, realizing too late she'd left it on the pavement. "Listen," she said, forcing herself to keep her tone steady. "Whatever game you think you're playing, I want no part of it. You can drop me off here and pretend this never happened, and I won't go to the police." He laughed then, a dark, hollow sound that made her heart skip. "You think I'm worried about the police?" Elena fell silent, dread curling in her stomach. Who was he? What kind of person could laugh off something like this? "Let's get one thing straight," he said, his voice cold and controlled as he guided the car down the winding road out of the city. "You don't have a choice here, Elena. The sooner you accept that, the easier this will be for you." She bit back a retort, pressing herself as far into the seat as she could, though there was no real escape. The world outside turned darker and darker as the city lights faded behind them, replaced by dense trees and winding, desolate roads. The silence in the car was suffocating, broken only by the low hum of the engine. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to stay strong. He didn't look at her as he answered, his gaze focused on the road ahead. "Kael. Kael Thorn." The name sent an eerie prickle down her spine, though she had no idea why. "What... what do you want with me, Kael?" For a moment, he didn't answer, and she thought he might ignore the question entirely. But then he looked at her, and the intensity in his gaze made her heart stutter. "I told you," he said, his voice soft but deadly serious. "You're mine." She wanted to laugh, wanted to shout at him that he was insane, but the look in his eyes made the words die on her tongue. There was something possessive, almost predatory in his expression, a look that sent a cold shiver down her spine. "Yours?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What are you talking about?" He leaned closer, so close that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her cheek. "It's not something you would understand, Elena. Not yet. But soon enough, you'll realize you belong with me. To me." She turned her face away, pressing her forehead against the cool glass of the window, desperate to escape the intensity of his gaze. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of what he was saying, but nothing added up. She didn't know him. Had never even seen him before tonight. How could he possibly believe she belonged to him? The car slowed as they reached the outskirts of a dense, shadowy forest. He turned onto a gravel path, the wheels crunching over rocks and twigs as they entered the woods. The trees grew denser, their branches stretching out over the car like twisted arms, casting deep shadows across the road. "Where are we?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, as if speaking louder might make the nightmare even more real. "My territory," he replied simply. The two words sent a strange chill through her. "Your territory?" He nodded, his gaze never wavering from the road. "The land of my pack." Pack? The word settled uncomfortably in her mind, mingling with the dark suspicion that had been growing ever since he'd first caught her in the alley. The unnatural strength, the inhuman speed, the way his eyes gleamed like a predator's in the dark... It all added up to something she didn't want to believe, something that her rational mind kept dismissing as impossible. "Are you-?" She stopped herself, afraid to say it out loud. Afraid he might confirm it. But Kael seemed to understand. His lips curved into that same cold, knowing smile. "Yes, Elena. I'm exactly what you're thinking." Her heart lurched, terror clawing up her throat. She'd heard the rumors, the whispered stories about creatures who lived on the outskirts, hidden in the shadows, fierce and untamable. But she'd never thought-never believed they were real. "This... this can't be happening," she whispered, her voice trembling. Kael's expression hardened, his gaze unyielding. "It is. You're in my world now, Elena. And here, there's only one law." He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly over her cheek, a gesture that was both possessive and oddly tender. "You belong to me." Her skin crawled beneath his touch, and she jerked back, pressing herself against the door. "I don't belong to anyone," she said, her voice fierce despite the fear constricting her chest. A dangerous glint flashed in his eyes. "You will." The car rolled to a stop in front of a sprawling, darkened manor nestled deep within the trees, its towering silhouette casting a foreboding shadow over the clearing. The sight of it-looming, ancient, with flickering lights in the windows-felt like the end of the road. There would be no escaping this place, no running from the man beside her. Kael turned to her, his eyes sharp and unyielding. "Welcome to your new home." She swallowed, her throat dry, heart pounding as he got out and circled to her side of the car. The door opened with a soft click, and his hand extended toward her, offering a choice she knew she couldn't refuse. "Elena." His voice was soft, almost coaxing. "Come with me." She hesitated, every instinct screaming at her to run, to fight, to do anything but take his hand. But his eyes held a promise, dark and unspoken, that chilled her to the core. Finally, with no other choice, she reached out, her hand trembling as it slipped into his. His grip was firm, possessive, as if he'd already claimed her, and as he led her toward the manor, a single thought echoed in her mind. There would be no escape.
