My head is pounding. My body hurts. I mentally groan wondering how hammered I must have gotten last night to feel this way. Slowly opening my eyes, the sunlight stinging my pupils with every blink. Feeling around, I felt leather and heard a car moving. Wait, where am I? This isn't home? Trying to focus on one question at a time, I hear a voice. It was familiar, but not a comforting familiar.
My body froze in realizing it is the ogre, and everything rushes back to me at once. How am I not dead? Why me? Where's my phone? Slowly reaching to my back pocket, all hope was lost when I find it empty and remember I had dropped it on the floor of the bathtub. Well, I am not dead, that has to mean something.
Finally collecting the courage to open my eyes, I took in my surroundings. I'm laying in the back seat of a decent sized car with black leather seats and black interior. The driver was none other than the ogre who knocked me out however long ago. Taking in his size again, he made eye contact through the rearview mirror. I can imagine I look like a deer in headlights, but I try to keep a stern exterior. 'Don't show fear, Don't cower.' "So you're finally awake. I told you there was an easy way and a hard way, but you chose the latter. Maybe think harder before you make a move like that again." I didn't answer, as he took his eyes off the mirror and watched the road.
After short silence, I am getting impatient. Slowly sitting up, he suggests I sit behind the passenger seat, which isn't really a suggestion since my alternative seating is in the trunk. I just stare out of the window. We are on the interstate so I can't just open the door and jump out. I am stuck, having no idea where we are, where we are going or even what time it was. Seeing that the sun was getting low, I am guessing it is around 5pm. I am starving and have to pee so bad. I put my face toward the ground in a submissive stance and spoke for the first time, "Can we pull over somewhere so I can go to the bathroom?" The ogre grunted, it was almost like an annoyed growl, really intimidating but I still lifted my head to make eye contact in the rearview mirror yet again.
"Fine. Stay there." He immediately pulls over and gets out of the car. Coming to open my car door, I realize he is going to make me go to the bathroom behind some trees next to the road. Great. So we really are in the middle of no where. "You have two minutes." I shake my head to show that I understand and start walking toward the trees, looking back to make sure he was not following.
I quickly did my business. This is my chance, just a few yards ahead is a forest area. If I can just make it there, maybe I can climb a tree and hide, figure out details later. Steadying my breath, and concentrating on my path, I booked it as fast as I could. I ran cross country and track in high school so I am pretty fast and can run for a few miles without stopping, and since my adrenaline was pumping, I feel like I actually have a chance.
Hitting the tree line, I don't waste any time. I ran for about half a mile in and chose a tree that had low limbs and lots of branches and leaves that would hide me. I can hear the ogre from a distance yelling my name. 'How does he know my name??' Shaking off the questions distracting me, I was almost to the tree when all of a sudden I was cut off by a dog. A very large dog who was gnashing his teeth at me. I froze in complete fear realizing that it was not a dog but a wolf. It's body was huge. A normal dog came to my knee, this wolf came above my waste, and that's when it was crouching like it was going to pounce. I felt like I couldn't move, maybe if I stayed still the ogre would catch it's attention and cause it to leave. But that was not the case.
As it stepped closer, I just stand there, shaking. Slowly trying to step back and tripping over the large roots sticking up out of the dirt. I hit the ground hard. Practically accepting that if he lunges at me I would fight until the end, tears started to fall from my eyes. This is it. I am not making it back home. I won't see my friends again. My parents would have been so disappointed.
The wolf was nearly on top of me at this point. Slobbering on my face as it's growls became more ferocious and terrifying. I close my eyes and cry. When it is obvious that I show defeat, the wolf stops. It just looks at me and backs up.
What happens next, I will never forget. The wolf growls and began to morph right in front of me. It's ears shrunk down and round out, it's claws are gone, as if it's paws sucked them in, while at the same time it's paws begin to stretch out into.. A HAND?! Hair started to shed off as if it were a snake shedding it's skin and it's face scrunched in showing a man's face. He was kneeling as he lifted his head to face me. The man, who I know as the ogre, stood up and glared at me in anger. Steam coming off his body and sweat stains appearing on his tank top. Thank God he is still in clothes.
