Prologue
Aza and Demmye are from a pack called the Crimson pack. It is located just outside of Denver West of Mount Evans and South of Chief Mountain and Squaw Mountain. Just South of the pack is the Meridian Hill and the Black Mountain. The Crimson Pack doesn’t associate with other wolf packs nor do they follow the normal wolf pack traditions. The Alpha, Alpha Jabez makes his own laws for his pack members and every member must follow them to a T or face the consequences. There is one tradition in particular that the Crimson Pack puts on every year and they call it “The Calling”. Basically, every year all young women that are newly of the age of eighteen must present themselves to Alpha Jabez and Luna Mara as “potentials”. Potentials then must mate with Alpha Jabez in the hopes that they get chosen to enter his household as one of his mistresses.
If chosen, the young women must report to Luna Mara going forward. Luna Mara basically acts as a domineering lady Alpha to the “chosen”, she monitors them and assigns them their daily tasks. If a chosen doesn’t do as they are told or doesn’t complete a task to Luna Mara’s standards, then they must report for reprimanding from Alpha Jabez. This usually consists of beatings, starvation, isolation, collaring and even being forced to perform s****l acts for the Alpha. Once the chosen have turned twenty-five they can then either choose to stay in the house as a “disciple” where they work very closely with Luna Mara and help to keep things in order and to keep watch over the other girls in the house or they can choose to be exiled. Most women choose to stay because they have mothered a child by the Alpha that they can’t bare to leave behind if they do leave.
A few of the chosen have tried to escape with their children but were soon caught and “exterminated” for being nonbelievers. It’s hard to escape the Crimson pack because it is plotted in the middle of many mountains without a town in sight. Alpha Jabez grandfather wanted it this way a long time ago to make it harder for other packs to find them. In doing do, I don’t think he realized that he was giving his grandson the perfect place to hide his abusive ways from the world.
The women who aren’t chosen usually have a hard time finding love again because not everyone’s mates are within the pack. Even if they were, it would be hard to find them because the men and women are forced to live separately other than for one month out of the year during the Springtime. Jabez calls it the “Mating Season”. A season specifically made to create potential new mistresses for him. Most couples hope to birth a male child in hopes that their child doesn’t have to live through the Jabez twisted ritual.
For Aza and Demmye, time is running short for them because they both have just turned eighteen and the Potentials Ritual is in a month. Since they were newborn pups, they have been inseparable. Their mothers were best friends and neighbors their whole lives and when they both got pregnant during the mating season, they knew that they were meant to raise their children together. Aza and Demmye were born three days apart. Demmye was born first on September twenty first and Aza was born on September twenty fourth. Growing up they made a promise to each other, “Cradle to Grave”.
“Aze… Aze… Aze! Wake up!” said Demmye whisper yelling in Aza’s ear.
“Dee? What’s wrong? Are you okay?” Aza responded with a groggy voice half yawning.
“Come on! Get dressed. We have to go now!” Demmye responded hastily.
“Where are we going? What’s happening?” Aza said confused and sitting up in bed.
“Sweetheart, there’s no time to explain. We’ll explain it to you on the way there.” Michelle said answering her daughters questions.
“On the way to where mom? Where are we going?” Aza said very confused.
“Here, grab this and take it down to the truck outside. We don’t have a lot of time.” Michelle said handing Aza a heavy duffle bag.
“Truck? What Truck?” Aza questioned taking the bag from her mother. Aza had only seen three vehicles in her entire life. The first being a huge delivery truck that delivered various item for the pack house and pack members and the two cars that Alpha Jabez and Luna Mara were driven around in. Where on earth did a truck come from and why are we putting stuff in it? Are we getting on it? We can’t do that. No one is allowed to leave.
Aza walked through the tiny one bedroom house that her and her mother shared hauling the duffle bag outside the front door. To her surprise, there was what looked like a delivery truck outside. A man walked up to her and took the bag and threw it in the back of the truck. Looking inside Aza saw a bunch of different suitcases and bags full of different things. The man turned and grabbed another bag from Michelle and threw it in the back as Rose and Demmye were walking over with more of their bags.
“You all are gunna have to ride back here and hang on to something. I can’t have any of you in the front with me or the wolves at the entrance will see you.” The man said looking at Rose and Michelle.
“We can do that. That’s not an issue. Just stick to the deal and get us out of here. You said you could take us as far as Colorado City right?” Rose asked for conformation.
“Yes ma’am. I can get you there. Just hang on. Once we get to Denver I can stop and you all can get in the cabin with me.” He said reassuring her.
“Sounds like a plan!” Michelle responded.
“Just stay quiet and find you something to hang on to. It won’t take long.” The man said with a very serious look on his face. We all nodded and climbed into the back of the truck. Michelle and Aza sat next to each other on one side while Rose and Demmye sat on the other. The truck started up and began to move. All four women frantically started reaching for things to hold on to because the ride was extremely bumpy. Rose grabbed what looked like a small handle that she assumed was used to latch hooks onto, Demmye grabbed onto a pole that went from one end of the truck to the other, Rose also grabbed that pole and Aza hung onto the handle of what looked like a giant lock box attached to the truck.
Soon the truck began to slow down and both Rose and Michelle grabbed both Aza and Demmye and covered their mouths to try and keep them as quiet as possible along with covering their own mouths to do the same. They heard the driver talking to someone in an excited tone about some sports team and then they heard him wish the man a good weekend and telling him bye. The truck started moving again and it hit a huge bump. Demmye flew in the air and Rose just barely caught her and put her hand back over her mouth and started shushing her.
After about an hour of what felt like the worst roller coaster ride ever, the truck finally came to a stop. They could hear the man open the driver side door and then close it again. Next, they could hear his foot steps walking toward the back of the truck. Next the door to the back slide up and the man was there smiling at them.
“Is everyone still in one piece back here?” the man said grinning. “I told you I could get you out of there in one piece. You shouldn’t have doubted me.”
“Yes, yes Phill, you did good son. I’m proud of you.” Michelle said with an eye roll.
“Wait, son?” Aza said once again confused. What is going on here mom? What are we doing. If we get cau…” Aza said at as Michelle cut her off.
“Isn’t it obvious Aza? We’re escaping. We’re getting out of that bullshit of a wolf pack and are going to live our own lives.” Michelle said very sternly. Aza had never heard so much relief in her mother’s voice before. It was very alarming to her.
“You still never answered my first question. Son?” Aza said looking at the man that led their escape.
“Aza, this is Phillip. Your older brother. I gave birth to him four years before you. When he was two, Jabez men came and took him from me and told me that he needed to start living with the men. I didn’t see him again until he was fourteen. At that time I told him about you and we’ve been planning this ever since.” Michelle answered patting her son on the shoulder.
“Well, they’re going to be looking for him aren’t they? They’re gunna want their truck back… Right?” Aza questioned again.
“Not for another week. The job I have in the pack is picking things up and making deliveries. I only go back to the pack every Friday to drop off the stuff that I picked up for them and then pick-up things they want delivered out. They won’t know I’m missing until then and when they do, we’ll be long gone.” Phillip answered.
“But won’t they notice that all of us are gone when we don’t report to school and work?” Aza asked in disbelief.
“No, Me and rose took care of that. There isn’t actually no school today Aza like I told you. Me and Rose called the school and told them that you and Demmye have the flu and most likely won’t be back until at the least Wednesday. So we have until then to get out of dodge.” Michelle answered resting her hand on her daughter’s shoulder.
The rest of the trip to Colorado City was a blast. They small crew sang a bunch of car karaoke and Aza got to get to know her new older brother pretty well. They stopped at different shops to try new different foods. Aza and Demmye bought matching t-shirts and Demmye bought a beautiful headband that had gorgeous purple flowers on it.
Once they finally reached Colorado City, Phillip had a plan to ditch the truck. He parked it in a random alley way and the crew worked together to get the bags and suit cases out of the back. Afterwards, right before her eyes Aza watch her older brother transform into his wolf. Once he was a wolf he began scratching and biting the truck putting marks and dents all over it. He bit through each tire with his teeth letting the air out and jumped on top of the windshield shattering it. Once he was done he transformed back into his human form and Michelle handed him his clothes. He dressed and came back from behind the truck.
“There. Now if those ass holes find it, they’ll think I got attacked by a different pack or something.” Phillip said grinning.
“Now what?” Demmye said yawning.
“Come with me.” Phillip answered. They all followed him two blocks over where an Expedition was parked. He rummaged in his jacket pocket and pulled out a set of keys and told all of us to get in.
“We have to swing back around and get the bags real quick and then we can go where ever you want to go next.” Phillip said twisting the dial to try and find a radio station. They stopped at the truck, loaded everything up and were on their way.
“Where should we go then?” Phillip asked looking at his mother.
“I don’t know. I would prefer to stay somewhere where it’s cold, but I know that may not be possible.” Michelle answered.
“We could try Oregon?” Phillip suggested.
“Does it have a lot of open land? Rose asked.
“I don’t know, ain’t never been.” Phillip answered shrugging.
“What about Wyoming? It seems far enough, and it is still considered a cold-ish state.” Rose suggested.
“Wyoming it is then. Just remember though, the money I stole won’t be enough to completely just outright buy us all a brand-new house or anything. We may have to settle for a small place until we can all get jobs and start saving money.” Phillip reminded both his mother and Rose.
Once the crew got to Wyoming, they decided to rent a small apartment. From there they spent the next year saving up money to be able to buy a piece of land with a small house on it. Once they were able to, they bought three acres right up against the south side of Flathead Lake. It had a four-bedroom trailer home on it that was perfect for them. They paid for it in cash because they didn’t want to use a bank loan and end up having Crimson find them due to it.
“Dee! Dee! Your mom needs our help outside.” Aza shouted through the house trailer.
“What is it?” Demmye responded in a groggy tone. Aza just shrugged and Demmye followed her through the house and out the front door.
“What’s up Rose?” Aza said walking towards Rose pulling open the back door to the expedition.
“Groceries ladies. I need your hands.” Rose responded with a smile. The next second they could hear a car coming down the long driveway.
“Girls, inside the house now!” Rose shouted and started shoving the girls towards the house. They got in and Rose ran to Michelle’s room and opened the closet door. She began moving shoes and small boxes out of the way of the floor and stopped and opened one box that had a small spray bottle in it.
“Here! Both of you spray this all over you now and quickly.” Aza took the bottle and started spraying Demmye down with it. She then handed it to Demmye and had her spray her with it while she spun in circles. Rose then pulled the carpet up in the closet a bit and grabbed ahold of a handle and pulled it up. The ground rose and down below was a small room.
“Girls, get in here and whatever you do, do NOT make a sound. Don’t come out until everything is silent for at least thirty minutes. An hour to be safe.” Rose said hastily looking from the door to the bedroom and back to the girls.
“Mom, what is going on!?” Demmye said with tear forming in her eyes.
“They’ve found us sweetheart. It will be okay. If me, Michelle or Phillip aren’t here when you get out, don’t come looking for us. All of this was for you two. We wanted you to have a normal life and we don’t regret anything.” Rose explained.
Aza started to realize what was about to happen and started crying herself. “Please, tell my mom and Phillip that I love them. That I will always love them.” At that Rose gave them both a big hug and ushered them into the small room under the floor. She then closed it and put some of the boxes back on top of it, so it didn’t look disturbed.
For the next hour the girls heard the shrieking sounds of Rose being tortured and questioned. The was a lot of yelling and banging throughout the house and the girls sat in the hidden room holding each other as they heard several footsteps pass all around them and above them. Eventually the sounds stopped and the girls remembered what Rose told them. ‘Don’t come out until everything is silent for at least thirty minutes’. So the girls just sat there hoping and praying to the moon Goddess that Rose was okay.
“Aza! Aza! Aza! Are you still hear? Please tell me you’re okay!” Phillips voice rang through the house.
“What do we do?” Demmye whispered.
“I’m sure he knows where this hiding spot is if Rose did.” Aza responded. Next there was shuffling up above and the door t the secret room opened up and Phillip’s face that was soaked in tears appeared.
“PHILLIP!” both girls shouted in unison. He wrapped his arms around both of them and wept silently.
“Phillip, what happened? Where is mom and Rose?” Aza said with concern in her voice.
“I went to pick mom up from work and her manager said that three men came in and took her and by the looks of the house, I can only assume that they took Rose too.” Phillip answered looking down at the ground. “I have to go and turn myself in girls. We all have the story straight you see. Remember when we left we reported that you both were sick? Well, we always said that if we were found that we would tell the, that the reason why we left was because you two got so sick that we felt that we didn’t have any other choice but to find a hospital to get the both of you well. We’re going to tell them that you both died in the hospital due to some sickness and that we were afraid to return in the chance that Jabez wouldn’t believe us.” Phillip explained.
“You can’t turn yourself in Phillip. We need you!” Demmye said starting to cry again.
“Brother, please…” Aza said already in tears.
“You don’t need me anymore girls. You don’t need anyone. You’re almost twenty-one, the age where the world will start to make sense. All of this will make sense soon enough. You both have this house and the garden. You have everything here to survive on your own. If I don’t go, then they’ll be back to look for me and I don’t want to risk them finding the both of you. But I promise, everything will work itself out. The right thing always works itself out. I love you both so much.” He gave them another hug and turned around and walked out of the house. The girls followed him outside and watched as he got into his truck. He started it and began to back up to turn the truck around and stopped. He looked at both girls and smiled and gave them one last wave before leaving. The girls waved back and Aza started to cry hysterically. Demmye grabbed her and just held her while she cried.
“It’s okay Aze. Everything will be okay. We will be okay.” Demmye said using every ounce of power that she had to hold back her own tears to stay strong for her best friend.
