After the party the Vaughan home was unusually quiet that evening. Nathalie went back to work.
Nathalie sat in the living room, reviewing documents from the mall her mother, Jessica Osborne, had given her to manage. Even though everyone told her to rest because she was carrying twins, Nathalie refused to stop working.
She needed to feel like herself again.
When Zachary entered the room, he stopped for a moment.
He had expected her to be asleep.
Instead, he found her sitting there peacefully, her hair falling over her shoulders, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
“You’re still working? You just finished celebrating your birthday aren’t you tired “he asked.
Nathalie looked up.
“I’m almost finished.”
Zachary frowned slightly.
“You should take care of yourself.”
For a moment, Nathalie paused and smiled.
“I’m fine,” she replied softly.
He walked closer.
“You always say that.”
Their eyes met.
The silence between them felt heavier than words.
Zachary noticed the tiredness in her eyes. The pain she tried so hard to hide.
“Nathalie…”
She looked away.
“What?”
He wanted to apologize.
He wanted to tell her that he regretted bringing Ivanka to the banquet. Even though he had already apologized. He has noticed her a lot of things recently and he has seen how stupid he had been.
He wanted to tell her that he hated seeing her hurt.
But before he could speak, Nathalie stood up too quickly.
A little unsteady, she lost her balance.
Zachary immediately reached out and caught her.
For a moment, she was in his arms.
Their faces were close.
Too close.
Nathalie could feel his breath.
Zachary looked into her eyes, and memories of their happier days came rushing back.
The love.
The laughter.
The moments he nearly destroyed.
Slowly, he leaned closer.
Nathalie’s heart raced.
She wanted to stop him.
But a part of her wanted it.
Their lips were only inches apart when a sudden sound from the hallway broke the moment.
They quickly moved away.
The silence returned.
But this time, both of them knew something.
