Chapter 16
Nathalie’s POV
I woke up earlier than usual.
Today was my prenatal checkup.
I sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, gently resting my hand over my stomach.
“Good morning, little ones,” I whispered with a smile.
A knock sounded on the door.
I looked up.
Zachary stood at the doorway.
“We have your appointment today.”
“I know.”
“I’ll take you.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know,” he said calmly. “But I want to.”
I stared at him for a moment before looking away.
“Okay.”
He nodded and left the room.
I didn’t know what was going on with him lately.
He had been acting differently.
And honestly, I didn’t know whether to be happy about it or protect my heart.

At the Hospital
The drive to the hospital was quiet.
When we arrived, we checked in and waited for the doctor.
After a while, the nurse called my name.
“Mrs. Vaughn?”
I stood up.
Zachary immediately followed.
We entered the examination room, where a woman in a white coat greeted us warmly.
“Good morning. I’m Mrs. Louisa Adams. I’ll be conducting your examination today.”
“Good morning, Doctor,” I replied.
“How have you been feeling?”
“Fine. Just a little tired and nauseous sometimes.”
“That’s quite common during pregnancy. Let’s have a look at your baby and make sure everything is progressing well.”
I lay down while Mrs. Adams prepared the ultrasound.
Zachary stood beside me.
The room became quiet as the machine started.
Mrs. Adams studied the screen carefully.
I immediately became nervous.
“Is something wrong?”
She smiled.
“No. Everything looks perfectly fine.”
I sighed in relief.
But then she looked at the screen again.
“Actually…”
She smiled.
“There’s something you two should know.”
Zachary stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Mrs. Adams turned the screen slightly toward us.
“You’re not expecting one baby.”
I blinked.
“What?”
She smiled.
“You’re expecting twins.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
I stared at the screen.
“Twins?”
“Yes. Two babies.”
I covered my mouth with my hand.
“Oh my God.”
I looked at Zachary.
He looked completely stunned.
“Two?”
Mrs. Adams laughed softly.
“Yes, Mr. Vaughn. Two.”
I felt tears fill my eyes.
I couldn’t believe it.
Two little babies.
Two hearts.
Two tiny lives growing inside me.
Zachary reached for my hand.
This time, I didn’t hesitate.
I held his hand tightly.
“We’re having twins,” I whispered.
He stared at the screen, his eyes fixed on the tiny shapes.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
“Twins…”
He squeezed my hand.
“I don’t even know what to say.”
I laughed through my tears.
“Neither do I.”
Mrs. Adams continued with the examination and explained that everything appeared healthy so far.
When the appointment was finally over, Zachary helped me sit up.
As we walked out of the hospital, he kept glancing at me.
“What?” I asked.
He smiled.
“I’m going to be a father of two.”
I laughed.
“And I’m going to be a mother of two.”
He stopped walking.
Then, without warning, he pulled me into a gentle hug.
I froze.
His arms tightened around me.
For a moment, I forgot about Ivanka.
I forgot about the arguments.
I forgot about all the pain.
All I could think about were the two little lives we were bringing into this world.
Maybe…
Just maybe…
We still had a chance.
