Chapter 5

“Well that was a bust. They mustʼve moved on to another hide out.” Durell complained as he walked back to his car. Molly was right at his heels. “Do you know any other place where theyʼd be?” “There is a café they used to go to often. Itʼs just a couple blocks from here.” “Well letʼs go.” Molly opened her car door and slid in. Durell started the car and took off down the street. Within two minutes he pulled over in front of a couple of local businesses. “Iʼll just go in and ask around. It doesnʼt take two of us to do that.” Molly was disappointed, but chose not to argue. “Fine. Iʼll just die of boredom in here.” “You do that.” Durell closed the door and walked into the café. Molly watched him for a minute talking to some people, but soon she became bored and decided to turn on the radio. She clicked the power button. Nothing happened. She kept trying to click buttons but it didnʼt work. She tried to see if the cassette player worked. That turned on but didnʼt play anything. She tried clicking the eject button. Nothing came out and a weird noise escaped from it. Confused, Molly put her hand in the hole. She could feel something inside it. Before she could pull it out, she looked up and saw Durell come out of the café. She quickly took her hand out and sat up. He looked at her and pointed at a shop next door to the café. He mouthed something to her she couldnʼt make out. She nodded and gave him a thumbs up, assuming he meant he was going to go in there. As soon as he was out of sight again, she shoved her hand back into the cassette player. After some difficulty of unsticking whatever was in there, she finally pulled it free. She could barely believe her eyes. She shifted the blue gem around in her hands. The more she looked at it, the more she was sure that it was the exact sapphire that Director Marcello had sent them on the hunt for. Molly didnʼt know what to do. She couldnʼt confront Durell on her own. She began to search the car more to see if she could find more evidence that it was him that stole the gem. She decided to bring this up to Marcello and if she didnʼt have enough proof, sheʼd be in big trouble. She opened the glove box and began going through the papers stuffed in there. At first she only found bills after bills. About to give up, she heard a clunk. There was something in there that wasnʼt paper. She dug far into the back and found an old cell phone. She unlocked it and it automatically went to the messages. There was no known number, but the messages were very specific about the sapphire heist. Molly started to panic. She was working with the man she was trying to catch. Movement flashed in the corner of her eye. She looked over and saw Durell coming back to the car. She hurriedly shut the glove box and shoved the phone and jewel in her pocket. “I asked everyone and no one has seen them recently. Maybe we should try another place.” Durell said when he got into the car. “Are you ok? You look like youʼve just seen a ghost.” Molly looked out her window so he couldnʼt see her face. “Yup. Iʼm fine. Letʼs just head back though. Iʼm getting pretty tired and hungry.” “Alright. Whatever you say boss.”
