Chapter 3

The first stop Molly made was to the gym to tell Charles the exciting news. She pulled him aside from his training and started hugging him. Charles pulled back and laughed. “So I take it that your meeting went well today?” “Charlie! I got my first assignment! Of course it went well! Only downer is I have to work with this rude old guy who calls me Barbie constantly.” “Thatʼs amazing! Other than the old guy of course.” Charles paused and looked over Mollyʼs shoulder. “Donʼt look now but the witch is coming.” Molly groaned inside. Only Layla could ruin her happy moment. She turned around and was face to face with the witch herself. “So by the hugging and screeching Iʼd say your meeting was really a debriefing. Or did Marcello finally realize that you being here was a mistake?” Layla smirked. “I got my first mission. I canʼt tell you about it of course because that would be breaking protocol. But itʼs much better than your first mission. What was it again? A dog thief?” Molly smiled sweetly. Laylaʼs eyes became even colder than they were before. “Watch it, Molly. Just because Marcello is your adoptive father, doesnʼt mean that I wonʼt pummel you in an instant.” Molly got right back into Laylaʼs face. “Try it.” They stared at each other until a voice started cursing at them in German. The three of them looked at their coach. Molly looked back at Layla. “Looks like you better get back to training so that you can have another mission.” Layla didnʼt say anything as she walked away. Molly turned back to Charles. “You better get back to work too before you get in trouble. Iʼll see you in two days.” She stood on her toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Molly!” Molly turned to see who was yelling her name. It was Durell. He was standing in the doorway motioning her to hurry up. “I gotta go. Bye!” She hollered as she jogged to Durell. “Bye! Be safe!” Charles hollered back before getting back to work. Molly barely got to Durell before he turned around and started walking. She caught up to him and turned her jog into a walk. “So was that your boyfriend, Barbie?” Durell asked never looking at her. Molly almost stopped in her tracks. “Ew. No. Heʼs like my big brother. He kind of adopted me as a little sister when I came here. And for the last time, my name is Molly!” “Yeah yeah. Molly.” He said sarcastically. “I still think Barbie suits you better.” ‘This is gonna be fun.’ Molly thought as she ignored him. * * * The city went by in a blur as they sped down the street. The only time Molly had been out of the institution was a field trip with Patty. She was only let out to understand what it was like in the real world for this exact situation. She did happen to sneak away and get the police files on her parentsʼ murder when they were at lunch. This time Los Angeles looked and felt different. Maybe it was the sudden sense of freedom she felt now that she was allowed to be out and about. She couldnʼt stop looking out the window and Durell noticed. “Itʼs just a city, Molly. Whatʼs your problem?” Durell asked. Molly sat back in her seat and stared forward. “Iʼve been in the institution since I was 4 years old. They donʼt exactly allow us to leave, Durell.” “Jason.” “What?” “My name is Jason. I think you can call me that seeing as weʼre… partners.” He said the end in an obviously disgusted voice. Molly turned to face him. “Listen, Jason. It was as much my idea as it was yours for us to become partners. I canʼt help what Marcello decides for us to do.” Durell glanced over at Molly. “Isnʼt he your adoptive father? Canʼt you persuade him to do what you want him to do?” Molly scoffed, faced back forward and looked down at her hands. “Yeah some dad. Iʼve barely seen him the past 13 years. Itʼs just a formality so that he could legally put me in the institution. I honestly have no say over him.” Durell didnʼt say anything. He just kept driving and Molly turned back to her window. After a few minutes of silence, the car pulled over and stopped. Molly looked over at the driverʼs seat to see Durell turning off the car and pulling the key out. Molly looked back out her window at the building they pulled up next to. “What are we doing? What is this place?” “This is the last known location for the Finnick brothers. Itʼs abandoned and a perfect hide out. I figured weʼd start here.” Molly got out of the car and stared at the building. Durell walked past her and started to head inside. Molly ran to catch up with him before the door shut. As she slipped through the door, she became enclosed in darkness.
