Chapter 1 (A Promise)
It was past 2 am when I arrived at the airport. My mother's driver came to pick me up, handing me a very large coat and a face mask to protect my identity. I had expected my mother to come. My mother and sister were always the ones to pick me up at the airport. I guess that wouldn't be happening again for me.
There was an intense silence in the car as we drove through the city. The corner of my lips was swollen from chewing on it, and I could already taste blood, but I couldn't stop. That is the only way to keep calm. Pain is the only way I was taught to keep myself in control. But it is getting harder and harder by the minute since the news of my twin sister's death reached me 9 hours ago. She was found dead at the school compound. Impossible, she can't be dead, she can't just leave me. I think this must be a prank. I am sure she is only using that to get me to come home. After all, I had sworn never to return.
We drove into that familiar estate, straight to the Harrington mansion. I got out of the car to meet that familiar old face, Sebastian.
'' Welcome home, young miss, it's been so long'' He usually smiles when he sees me, but today he maintains a straight face. I could see the sadness in his eyes as they remained focused on the ground, but he remained professional as ever.
'' Where is she?'' were the only words that could come out of my mouth. Nothing is welcoming about this home.
'' Right this way,'' he opened the large door and led me through the quiet house. No one in sight, not a single soul in sight, as usual. Whenever I arrive, all the workers are sent out of the house. There are only 3 employees who know of my existence. Sabastin, my mother's driver and my father's secretary.
I reached Astrid's room, and the sound of my mother's cry was heard through the door. I didn't wait for permission to open the door, and my heart dropped. There she was, lying in bed lifeless with my mother kneeling by her bedside in tears ''My baby, why did you decide to leave me?''. My father stood next to my mother with a cold expression, but I could tell he was struggling. After all, she was his favourite child. At the left end of the room stood my father's secretary, as upright as ever.
'' As.. Astrid'' I called out as I walked to her bedside. A pale, lifeless beauty with a face exactly like mine, lying in bed. dressed in a white cloth, her skin dry and darker than usual. My vision blurred as tears came running down. My heart sank in pain. I bit my inner lips harder as I struggled to hold back my scream. My knees getting weak. I finally got on my knees '' Astrid?'' I called again, hoping she would jump up and laugh out loud like she used to and tell me this is a joke. Why her?
Why her, why Astrid? It should have been me? I am the one who deserves to die, not her. She has done nothing wrong in the world, she is just an innocent free spirit, so why her? '' Astrid'' I called again, grabbing her hands. They were cold, too cold. '' Oh, please, Astrid, don't do this to me,'' I couldn't hold it anymore '' Astrid, you promised me, remember, and we don't break promises, please wake up, tell me this is a joke''
'' Akira'' I heard my mother's voice, but wasn't interested in her right now.
'' Astrid, open your eyes and talk to me'' I begged, reaching to rob her face. '' You can't leave me like this, we are ride or die, remember?''
''Akira'' my mother wraps her arm around me, and I turn my head to look at her. meeting her beautiful ice blue eyes ''My sweetheart'' she whispers. Her cheeks wet, eyes red so was her nose.
'' Mama?'' biting my lips hard, pleading that this was a lie. My sister wasn't gone. I looked in her eyes for assurance, but she nodded. It was clear. The answer was clear in my mother's eyes, and it was enough to make me blow up '' No, no, no''
'' Akira, my dear''
''Noooo'' I pushed her way with a scream '' Nooo'' I looked to my father, who carried a frown. He hates it when I lose control in a situation, but right now I don't give a f**k. There are times one stays in control and times that one loses their s**t, and right now is not the time to act cool and mighty. My sister, his daughter, is dead, and I expect him to be going crazy right now. '' Noo'' I screamed at the top of my voice
'' Will you calm down'' he fires
'' Don't you f*****g tell me to calm down, Mr Harrington'' I snapped, and his eyes fell wide open. I have always been the wild one, the black sheep, the monster and the one sent away from treatment. '' Who did this?'' crying to control my breath
'' And what do you plan to do?''
'' I am going to kill that mother fucker who hurt my sister''
''That is not your job, young lady. There are many things to attend to right now, and I don't need you ruining them. I make the decisions here, and you follow'' His voice spoke in rage and disgust '' If it wasn't for your mother's pleading, i wouldn't have let you come back here''
'' Wow, your mistake'' I forced a smile
'' Excuse me,'' he lets out in disbelief.
'' Next time, you should have gone with your decision to leave me behind because, unlike you, I will not sit behind trying to make plans just so you can maintain the family's image. Your image'' I fired the truth at him '' I know Astrid's death doesn't matter to you.'' That was a lie. Astrid is his favourite daughter, and he is going through a lot right now, but if I don't press that button, he wouldn't do the right thing. '' I am sure you are thinking about how to use this case in your favour right now''
'' Shut up!!!'' He shouted, finally letting out his anger. '' Look here, young lady '' My father stormed towards me, standing before me with rage in his eyes, but I wasn't scared of them. My father is a man, feared and respected by many, but not once have I even feared him, not even as a child. I guess that is why he hates my gut. '' I am the head of this family, and whatever decision I made in the past is what has led us to our greatness today.''
'Huh'' I bit back my laugh
'' Astrid is dead, she is my daughter, the daughter of Harrington, and I swear to my living and dead body that I will make sure whoever ever is behind this, pays for with every single hair on his body'' My father said forming, it was a promise and ones my father makes a promise, he never goes back on it.
'' Akira dear'' My mother's gentile voice caught through our intensity. The only person who can stop our argument. She took my hand and I turned to look at her. '' Your sister has left us, do you think she would be happy to know that you two are fighting next to her body?'' My father and I looked at each other, before our gaze fell on my sister's body in bed '' This is not the time for this '' she adds
I looked at my father again, and our eyes locked. '' Are you going to announce her death to the media?'' I asked
''Those are matters that concern your mother and You have no business...''
'' Don't'' I cut him off, not giving a f**k about his lecturing.
'' Excuse me?''
'' Astrid was found dead in school, which means the culprit is in that school. I will take her place''
'' Honey, what are you saying?'' my mother spoke a bit flustered
'' I am saying that I will become Astrid Harrington and find my killer''
'' But the killer knows she is dead'' The confusion in my mother's tone was clear. She wasn't against the idea, but searching for the possibility
'' Exactly... I will make him or her come to me again. ''I look away from my mother to my father, the one with the deciding power. '' Can you make it happen?''
'' You want to take your sister's place''
'' i want revenge'' i correct. Just like my father, it was a promise. My promise to my sister.
