Chapter 1: The Invitation
I am so excited… Today my boyfriend is taking me to meet his family, although I also feel nervous because I know they are wealthy people and I am nothing more than a college girl about to graduate. I have a part-time job at a hospital that only covers my basics, but my boyfriend is very sweet and took me to buy a beautiful red dress; I thought it was a bit daring, but he told me he loved how it looked on me. I hope his family likes me because I have been told they are quite strict; I have been dating him for about five months and everything has been wonderful.
My boyfriend Javier studies Architecture and I study Nursing. We are both about to graduate. We are 23 years old. We met at the university and haven't been apart since the very first day, though I won't deny we've had some issues because he tends to be a bit overly flirtatious with other girls.
"Today is Grandfather's birthday and I am happy because he will hand over his position to me, which I have been waiting for over some long years. It is good to know that no one else in the family is interested in the role. That way we don't have to compete; they are just content with the check that must reach them monthly, although this also brings me a lot of responsibility because I must avoid going bankrupt."
I took my phone and sent Kiara a message with the location of the place; she is the one who will carry me to that position because my grandfather made it a condition that I present my future wife today. The good thing is that she knows very well what awaits her; I slept with her only once, but then I proposed a deal that she did not hesitate to accept, and I know she is up to the task of being my wife.
I am nervous because I don't know if my grandfather is going to accept my girlfriend. He is a bit strict regarding the people around us; I also don't know if she will like the high-society world, since she is very humble and simple. The good thing is that I am the youngest and I don't have to assume any responsibility. My older brother is the one who is supposed to take the position, but at some point, I have to get involved. I don't dream of marrying her or anything of the sort, but today I had to come accompanied no matter what; those were our grandfather's demands. The good thing is that I am young and I have the chance to change girlfriends, but my brother has to present his future wife today; I hope he had some luck with that because he has never been a man to have girlfriends, usually he takes the one of the turn to bed and then throws her away.
We arrived at my grandfather's house, everything looked spectacular, although he did not look very happy because I arrived alone. I have been calling Kiara for a while and nothing, she doesn't answer. I don't know where that damn woman is hiding!
"Brother, why are you alone? This will get ugly if your girl doesn't show up!"
"I don't know what the hell happened to her. This morning she told me she had everything ready, I sent her the location and she confirmed her attendance; I don't understand what could have happened to her."
"Grandfather doesn't accept excuses and you know it."
"I know very well that I am in big trouble, but what do you want me to do? And remember that if Kiara doesn't come, I won't be the only one affected by this… He might decide to leave the position to you or, worse yet, leave us with nothing."
"Damn it, if he decides to do that, I won't be able to graduate. We have to find a solution right now!" My phone rings and it's my girlfriend. "Princess! Where are you?"
"I'm about to arrive, my love."
"I'm coming out to meet you… Brother, I'll leave you, I have to go out to receive my girlfriend."
"Your girlfriend is coming?"
"Yes, Grandfather asked me to bring her because you were going to bring a date."
"I call Kiara and the phone sent me to voicemail. This damn woman is not coming! So we are screwed… Forget about your graduation and all the wonderful plans you had for the rest of your life. There will be no more trips, vacations, or unlimited credit cards."
"You can't screw me over like this, Iván! You must fix this s**t right now!"
"What do you want me to do? Go out to the street, take the first woman I find by the hand, and force her to introduce herself as my fiancée? Remember that Grandfather doesn't want a simple courtship; the woman I present today is the one I have to marry and the one who has to give me the heir before the old man dies. You say it easily because you have it very easy: today you present one and tomorrow you can present another; but not me, and you know how hard it is for me to imagine myself with one woman for the rest of my life, when the only thing I've done is take them to bed for a couple of hours."
"Come with me to the entrance, I have an idea."
"I go out with my brother to see what he comes up with. Don't tell me you're going to look for one of the cleaning girls because that won't work; Grandfather is no fool, he will find us out immediately."
"Ha, ha, ha, I'm not an i***t, Iván!"
A taxi pulls up and a girl steps out, whom I assume is his girlfriend.
"Hi, Javi, I'm sorry for being late."
"Don't worry… Please, don't hug me, I need you to help us with something."
"Tell me?"
"I need you to pretend to be my brother's fiancée."
"Are you crazy? How can you ask me that?"
"I wouldn't ask you if it weren't a matter of life or death. My grandfather is turning 65 today and he will hand over the company's position to my brother only if he brings his fiancée, and the girl has stood him up. If my grandfather finds out, he will leave us out on the street, I won't be able to graduate, and I won't have money for anything. This is my brother Iván, he is 29 years old, he is a businessman and the heir to the family. It will only be for today, then we will find a solution."
"I understand that you are worried, but I cannot go in there and pretend to be someone else. What will happen after that?"
"That is the least of it, honey, or do you want to see me on the street? Don't you care about what happens to my future? You more than anyone know all the sacrifice I've made to get through this major, and now I wouldn't be able to graduate."
