Chapter four

“Sorry, Bolton. I was really hungry. I hope you don’t mind,” I said quietly. Please don’t be mad. I saw him thinking it over. “It’s fine, Elizabeth,” He said while closing the distance between us. Taking my plate, he rubbed his thumb over the side of my face, the spot where he hit me. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that,” he said. “It’s okay. I understand, you were mad.” “I shouldn’t have taken it out on you,” he said while rubbing my face with his thumb. “You don’t seem as mad as before,” I said with a small smile. He returned my smile with his own. “True. We found her.” I wanted to take a step back at what he just said but couldn’t. I was leaning against the stove. I didn’t know what to think. I was afraid for Anna. She didn’t even get away. “Is she okay?” I was afraid of his answer. “For now,” he said with a grin. I took his hand. “Please don’t kill her, don’t hurt her. I will do anything you want. Just leave her alone.” My eyes were filling up; I didn’t want to cry. It took everything to push my tears back. “Anything?” Bolton said with a c****d eyebrow. “I will be your Luna. I will be by your side. Everything you want. But please let her live.” I was practically begging him. He moved in closer, pushing himself between my legs. “I want to see your wolf,” he whispered in my ear while sniffing me. “Okay,” I replied with a broken voice. Kira stirred inside my mind; she wasn’t happy with it. I didn’t understand why. She wanted me to shift more, but apparently not in front of Bolton. Bolton took a step back and grabbed my hand, guiding me outside. “Show me.” I glanced around, hoping we would be alone. With trembling hands, I started taking off my clothes. I was not that quick at shifting to shred my clothes off in one go. I needed space. “It may take a while. I don’t shift often,” I said nervously. I tried to start shifting, but Kira was fighting me. I was standing completely naked in front of Bolton. My body was not something to be proud of. I was really skinny; we never got a lot of food. One of the other things that keep us weak. I needed to shift. I kept fighting Kira until she finally let me shift. My bones started breaking, making me fall to the ground. This warmth moved through my body, and it felt as if it started to burn my skin off. My claws formed out of my fingers, and I couldn’t contain the agonizing scream that escaped. I wanted to stop, but I knew Bolton wouldn’t let me. I tried to push through the pain. To complete the shift. Slowly, my screams turned into a growl. My whole body was now covered in fur. I had never seen myself in daylight before, and I couldn’t help but gasp when I saw my fur color. All the wolves I saw were brown or gray. But me? I was a crème color. Almost like gold. My wolf wasn’t big or strong; just like every female rogue, I was small. I was nothing more than a big dog. I didn’t even notice that Bolton had shifted until I met his gray gaze. The same scar ran through his eye. He stalked past me, letting his fur brush through mine. The action alone made my stomach turn. Even though his wolf was bigger than mine, I still expected him to be bigger. He pushed his head into my side. Like he was trying to tell me something. We couldn’t mind link because we were not a pack with an Alpha. Yet it was as if his wolf wanted to play. I jumped aside, and he followed with this playfulness moving through his eyes. With a deep breath, I started running, not in fear, not from fleeing, but in freedom. The way my paws hit the ground, it was amazing. The wind moved through my fur, making even Kira purr in joy. Bolton was running beside me, and for the first time, he didn’t scare me. After a while, Bolton started leading the way. I noticed we were circling back to his house. I couldn’t help the disappointment that moved through me. I didn’t want this sense of freedom to go away. We arrived back at his house, and he instantly shifted back. I never saw him naked. If I pushed aside what a totally horrible person he was, he was sort of handsome. I walked over to my clothes and started shifting back. I wanted to put my clothes on as quickly as possible. The laughter that came from Bolton was something I hadn’t heard before. “You know I already saw your whole naked glory. You don’t need to hide.” I ignored him, not knowing what I could say to that and followed him back inside. “Can I see Anna?” I asked him. He wasn’t mean to me all the time. There were some moments when he was nice to me. It confused me even more. I wanted to believe he wasn’t all bad. But my gut told me he was. “Maybe tomorrow, stay here. I need to take care of some things.” He walked up to me and gave me a brief kiss on my cheek. I didn’t expect him to kiss me. But I froze when he did. I stayed at his house as he told me. I waited for hours, hoping Anna was okay. It was almost midnight. My eyes were getting heavier and there was no need to fight it anymore. I lay down on the couch. It didn’t take long for sleep to take me. I was half asleep when I noticed someone lifting me up. He pulled me in close and I recognized his scent. I knew it was Bolton. But still, I didn’t want to open my eyes. With a gentleness I wasn’t used to, he laid me on his bed. The softness made me fall further into sleep. He started undressing me and placed a blanket over me. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for me to drift off fully again. My eyes slowly fluttered open, and I instantly froze. I was in bed—with Bolton. I remembered him undressing me. I wasn’t naked. I still had my panties on. My breathing increased and so did my heartbeat. Bolton dragged me closer by the arm he had around my waist, until my body was flush against his. I tried my best to control my racing heart, I had to trust he wasn’t going to hurt me right now. When I turned around, it seemed he was still asleep. I tried to sniff him, to really take in his scent. I still didn’t understand why he wanted me. I know from stories you could sometimes smell your mate before you turned eighteen. But until now, there wasn’t a single thing about Bolton that drew me in. Maybe I need to try again. I pushed in closer, inhaled deeply, letting his scent fill me. A smirk formed on his face, startling me. “Are you sniffing me?” He opened his eyes. He didn’t seem mad. It seemed like he enjoyed what I did. He pulled me in closer. I tried to relax. I placed my head in his neck, inhaling his scent. He smelled dirty; it was like I could smell he was a bad person. “How do I smell?” he asked me while turning with me on top of him. I leaned back slightly, meeting his gaze. “Just like you.” He gently pushed my hair out of my face and tucked it behind my ear. His eyes were filled with kindness, a sight I didn’t see often. I let myself roll off him. But he kept me close. I rested my head on his chest. This is going to be my life. Him by my side. I let out a breath I was holding, trying to enjoy his gentle touches. “Can I see Anna?” I asked him after I finally dared to again.
