She looks up at him, sitting in the driver’s seat, smiling shamelessly, hopefully, poking at her misery, and the irony he sees in it now that she has been given the green light to join the chosen few in America. He cannot see beyond his own wish for her, into the depths of her loss and pain. She knows others who lost someone that day, but no one who lost everyone, everything. In such leveling devastation, she is again, alone. Hanan twitches her lips upward, into the briefest, slightest, biggest fraud of a smile she can manage, for him, to shut him up. “Yes, Baris,” is her reply. Hopping off, she turns back, nods at him, knowing he will see the gratitude that might exist if she cared at all
