Prologue
Sophia had never been to the cliff by the sea.
She had never walked its narrow, flower-lined path or felt the wind whip her hair into her face as waves crashed far below. She had never touched the jagged rocks or stood barefoot on sun-warmed grass, staring out into a horizon that didn’t exist.
But in her dreams, she had been there a hundred times.
The place was as familiar to her as her bedroom. As familiar as her name.
And he was always there, too.
Jay.
He smiled like he’d known her for a lifetime. Sometimes, he laughed and ran ahead, daring her to follow. Other times, he stood still, eyes stormy, mouth trembling, as if holding back words that would change everything.
Tonight, he was waiting.
She saw him first through the mist, standing at the cliff’s edge. The sea behind him roared louder than usual. Thunder rolled in the distance, though the sky was clear.
“You came,” he said, his voice low and aching.
“I always do,” Sophia answered without thinking.
Jay’s smile didn’t reach his eyes this time. “You don’t remember yet, do you?”
She shook her head. “Remember what?”
He stepped closer. “This is the fifth time you’ve lived this life. The fifth time you’ve stood right here. And every time, it ends the same.”
“You and me.”
Lightning cracked across the sky.
Jay took her hand, warm and solid, more real than anything she’d ever felt awake.
“This time, Sophia… choose differently.”
The cliff gave way beneath them. She screamed.
And then…
She woke up.
Gasping. Sweating. Crying.
Clutching the sheet to her chest like it could protect her from a dream that felt too real.
From a boy she swore she’d never met.
From a love story that hadn’t started yet, but already knew how to end.
