Prologue
I was staring out of the window as we were riding down the road. Jay was driving and talking. I could hear his voice as he spoke, but the words were not registering. "Aza, did you hear me?" I was in my world. I was trying to relax. The events that happened the night before just kept replaying in my head. I never even heard his question. I heard him ask me if I heard him. But what was the question before that? I just kept staring out the window. "Aza!?" I turned my head when Jay yelled my name. "What!?" I was so focused on my thoughts. I snapped my head around to him. "Did you hear me?" He had concern in his voice. I looked confused and unfocused. Jay was talking to me the entire time, and my mind was on something else. "Aza, I think this line of work is not for you?" He glanced over at me. Jay was serious. His tone was stern, and he was staring at me. I never knew when we had stopped, but Jay had pulled over on the side of the road. I was staring at Jay like he had grown a second head. My job is complicated, but it was all I knew. They trained us to be the best, and I was. My focus was not on him, and I will soon realize that it will piss him off. I never meant to ignore him. He could never understand how I felt when I got that contract. "Yea, you think so?" I was being sarcastic and giving him an attitude. He knew it. His eyebrows shot up when he heard my tone of voice. He just stared at me. He looked me up and down, so I just turned my head to ignore his gaze. He never liked the fact that I had left after I graduated and now he does not like my job. "I was talking to you, and you did not even hear me. This job is taking a toll on you." "Well, it's not the job. I was looking at the beautiful scenery." Boy, was I lying. There was no scenery, just fields upon fields upon fields. We were in the middle of nowhere. That's the way I like it. I was trying to avoid the boy scout in him. I did not want to hear another lecture on what was right and what was wrong. He always told me, if I get caught, my job will throw me under the bus. What the hell does he know? We were still sitting, and he was still staring at me. I finally turned my face to him. "Hell, Jay, what did you say?" I raised my voice slightly. He started pulling back onto the road. "So now I have to repeat myself?" This tit for tat s**t is getting old, and I was tired. "If you want me to answer the question, yes, you have to repeat it. If not, shut the f**k up." The last part slipped out before I could stop myself. He slammed on the brakes in the middle of the road. I was sure a car was going to ram into the back of us. I wanted so badly to stuff the words I just said back into my mouth. "What did you just say to me?" He was getting angry. I never spoke to him like that before. I would show him all the respect in the world. But today was a different day, and after the night I had, I needed him to shut the f**k up. We were still in the middle of the road. Jay was turning a shade of red. I ignored the question. "I know you did not say what I think you said to me. Have you completely lost your mind? What the f**k has gotten into you?" He raised his voice as he spoke. "Jay, please, pullover or drive. You are not the only vehicle on the road." I changed my tone and lowered my voice to defuse the situation. But it didn't work. "f**k that! Answer me. Have you lost your f*****g mind?" Damn right, I had lost my mind. It was a stressful night. I had to move him, and now I was heading back to my place. I wanted to relax in the quiet and not play twenty questions. "Jay, drive. I didn't mean to say what I said. We can talk about it when we get to my house." I was trying to avoid the conversation while we were in the truck. He sped off, and I was looking at him. I wanted to tell him to slow down, but I just returned to looking out the window. We pulled up into the driveway of my house, and before he could even put the truck in park, I hopped out of the truck and headed towards the house. Jay parked and slowly got out of the truck. He was walking behind me. His long strides made it easy for him to catch up to me. He grabbed my wrist and turned me around. "Oh no, before I even go in there with you, we are going to talk about what you said to me." He shook his head at me. "We can talk about it inside." I was trying to avoid the situation. I was already stressed, and I knew taking it out on him was wrong. It was a stressful situation for both of us. I wanted to keep him safe. He wanted me with him. Jay took a step back from the door. I unlocked the door and went in. He just stood there looking at me, waiting for me to answer him. "Are you coming in?" I asked him with a concerned look. "Not until you tell me what that was." He said, shaking his head. "I didn't mean to say it. It just slipped out. I don't feel like talking right now." I tried to explain. "Alright then." Jay turned around and was walking back to the truck. I ran outside behind him. "Where are you going?" I yelled at him. "I'm going home. And when you feel you want to talk to me about whatever you have going on in that beautiful brain of yours, you know where to find me." He kept walking, not even turning around to acknowledge me. I had stopped walking behind him. I was a little in shock. He never walked away from me the way he just did. "Jay," I yelled his name. He just kept walking. He hopped in the truck and pulled off. I was so mad. I ran into the house and went to my bedroom. I went to my gun safe and grabbed two nine millimeters. I ran out to the backyard where my targets were. I just started shooting, hitting headshots on the targets. I was so pissed and cursing under my breath. I knew he did not like the situation we were in, but he would have to deal with it for now. Life's greatest gift is given to us in spurs. Sometimes we are given the arduous task of trying to find our gifts, and sometimes they fall into our laps. We must be strong. By the end of this year here, I was about to quit. Let me tell you from the beginning.
