The Star That Fell
The bright lights of Sydney shone across the wet streets like thousands of sparkling diamonds scattered on black silk. Rain fell heavily from the dark night sky, hitting the ground with steady sounds that filled the quiet air. Ethan Kane stood alone on the high rooftop of his private penthouse building near the harbour. The cold wind moved around his tall, strong body, but he did not feel it. He had not felt real cold or real warmth for over four hundred long years. Ethan looked exactly like a handsome man in his early thirties, with sharp jaw lines, dark hair that fell across his forehead, and deep eyes that carried secrets no one could understand. He wore a long black coat that moved gently with the wind. To the world, he was just a rich, mysterious man who lived quietly. But the truth was much bigger and much more dangerous. Ethan was not from this Earth. He came from a faraway star, a place of bright light and endless power. He crashed here many centuries ago, and now he lived hidden among humans, always careful, always alone. He never allowed anyone to get close to him. Emotions were weaknesses that could destroy everything. He had seen too many people die while he stayed the same, never growing old, never changing. His special powers let him move things with his mind, heal serious wounds in seconds, and sense danger from very far away. But these same powers also made him a target for those who hunted beings like him. Tonight felt different. The rain was heavier than usual, and the air carried a strange energy that made his skin tingle. Ethan narrowed his eyes and looked up at the stormy sky. Suddenly, a bright streak of light cut through the clouds like a falling star. It moved fast, too fast, and crashed somewhere in the dark streets below his building with a loud sound that shook the ground. Ethan did not hesitate. He moved quickly like a shadow, his body almost flying down from the rooftop with the help of his hidden powers. His black shoes touched the wet ground in a narrow alley between tall buildings. The smell of rain and city streets filled his nose. There, lying on the cold ground near some old boxes, was a woman. She looked beautiful even in her unconscious state. Her long dark hair spread around her like wet silk, and she wore an elegant but torn black dress that showed she had come from some important event. Her skin glowed faintly for a few seconds with a soft purple light before it disappeared completely. Ethan knelt beside her carefully, his sharp eyes studying every detail. She slowly opened her eyes. They were a deep, warm brown, but for one brief moment, they shone with silver light. She looked up at him with fear and confusion. “Where… where am I?” she whispered, her voice soft but strong at the same time. Raindrops fell on her face and mixed with the water already there. “Sydney,” Ethan answered in a deep, calm voice. He helped her sit up slowly, keeping one hand on her back. “You fell from the sky. Who are you?” She touched her head and looked around the dark alley. “Sophia Reed. I am… I was at a big party for my new movie. Something attacked me. Strange people with strange eyes. I ran, and then… everything became light and I fell here.” She stared at him with wide eyes. “You… you are not like other people. I can feel it.” Ethan’s body became tense. He could sense danger coming closer. Old enemies from his home planet must have followed the energy of her fall. He stood up and pulled her gently to her feet. “We cannot stay here. It is not safe.” Sophia held onto his arm. Her hand felt warm against his cold skin. “Why are you helping me? You do not even know me.” “Because if I leave you here, they will find you,” he said quietly. His voice was cold but something inside him was already changing. For the first time in hundreds of years, he felt a real pull toward another person. “And because something brought you to me tonight.” He led her quickly through the rainy streets toward his hidden penthouse. The tall buildings of Sydney watched them silently as they moved. Sophia kept looking back, her heart beating fast. She was a famous young actress at the top of her career in Australia, always surrounded by lights, cameras, and people who wanted her attention. But right now, in this dark rainy night, she felt completely lost and strangely safe next to this mysterious stranger. When they reached the private elevator of his building, Ethan used his powers to make sure no cameras could see them. The doors closed and they went up in silence. Sophia watched him carefully. He was tall and handsome in a dangerous way. His face looked perfect, like it was carved from stone, but his eyes carried deep loneliness. Inside the warm, modern penthouse with big glass windows showing the beautiful harbour and the shining Sydney Opera House in the distance, Ethan gave her a soft towel and a clean shirt from his closet. “You should change,” he said. “And then you must tell me everything.” Sophia nodded but did not move right away. She stepped closer to him, looking up into his face. “Thank you, Ethan. I do not know how I know your name, but I do. Something inside me recognized you.” Ethan’s heart, which had been cold and quiet for so many years, suddenly beat stronger. He looked down at her beautiful face, wet from rain, and felt the walls he built around himself start to c***k just a little. Outside, in the dark Sydney night, unseen shadows began to move. The hunters were coming. But for the first time in centuries, Ethan Kane was no longer completely alone.
