Light and Shadows

940 Words
The next few days in Sydney passed with a strange mix of normal life and hidden danger. The sun shone brightly over the city during the day, making the harbour water sparkle like blue diamonds. Boats moved slowly, tourists took photos near the Opera House, and cars filled the busy streets. Everything looked peaceful from far away. But for Ethan Kane and Sophia Reed, every moment carried tension. Ethan stayed mostly in his penthouse during the day. He used his long experience to watch the city from his high windows. He could sense small changes in energy far away. His tall body moved quietly as he prepared simple food and checked the protections around his home. He had lived like this for many centuries always careful, always watching. But now his thoughts kept returning to Sophia. She brought something new into his quiet world. Sophia returned to her busy schedule as a famous actress. She wore nice clothes, smiled for cameras, and answered questions about her new movie. Her manager David kept calling her many times. “Sophia, you have been acting strange lately,” he said during one call. “People are talking. Some fans posted photos from the party night. They say they saw strange lights. Are you okay?” “I am fine, David,” Sophia answered while sitting in a makeup chair at a big studio. Bright lights shone on her face. “It was just a tiring night. I am ready for the photoshoot today.” She tried to sound normal, but inside she felt nervous. Every time she walked outside, she remembered Ethan’s warning. She carried the small device he gave her in her bag. It would vibrate if danger came close. During the photoshoot, she posed in front of cameras in beautiful dresses. The photographer praised her. “You look amazing today, Sophia! There is something different in your eyes more power.” Sophia smiled, but she knew the real reason. Her powers were growing stronger every day. When no one was looking, she practiced small movements with her mind. A makeup brush moved slightly on the table. She quickly stopped it. She could not let anyone see. That evening, Sophia had a big public event a red carpet premiere for her new movie. Many fans waited outside the big theatre. Lights flashed from cameras. Sophia wore an elegant long black dress. Her long dark hair flowed beautifully. She waved and smiled as she walked on the red carpet. From the shadows on a nearby rooftop, Ethan watched carefully. His dark coat moved with the night wind. He stayed invisible to normal eyes using his powers. Everything seemed fine at first. Sophia talked to reporters and took photos with other actors. But then Ethan felt it strong energy coming closer. Two hunters had mixed with the crowd. They looked like normal people, but their eyes had that cold silver shine. Ethan moved fast. He used his power to create a small distraction. A light pole near the entrance suddenly sparked and went dark. People turned to look. In that moment, Ethan got closer and quietly touched one hunter’s shoulder. The man forgot what he was doing and walked away confused. The second hunter tried to get near Sophia, but she felt the warning from the device in her bag. She moved quickly to a safer group of people. The event ended without big trouble, but Sophia felt very tired when she returned to the penthouse late that night. Ethan was waiting for her. The big living room was warm and quiet. The city lights shone through the windows like stars on the ground. “You did well tonight,” Ethan said in his calm deep voice. He gave her a glass of warm water. “I handled two of them. But more will come.” Sophia sat on the sofa and took off her high shoes. “It is getting harder to pretend everything is normal. My manager is asking too many questions. Fans are making stories online about strange things happening around me. I do not know how long I can keep this secret.” Ethan sat across from her. He did not come too close. “You are strong, Sophia. Stronger than you know. Your powers are helping you now. But we need to be smarter. Tomorrow we will practice blocking your energy completely. That way the hunters will have more trouble finding you.” They spent the next hour talking about plans. Sophia told him more about her life in the entertainment world the long days on set, the pressure to look perfect, and the lonely feeling even when surrounded by many people. Ethan listened quietly. He shared small memories from his long life, like watching the first lights of the Harbour Bridge many years ago. No big emotions or touching happened that night. They were simply two people working together to survive. Sophia felt safer with him there. Ethan felt something he had not felt in centuries a reason to protect his hidden life more carefully. Before Sophia went to sleep in the guest room, Ethan stood by the window looking at the dark city. “Rest well,” he said. “I will keep watch.” Sophia nodded. “Thank you, Ethan. For everything.” The night became quiet again. But far away in the shadows of Sydney, the hunters were gathering more strength. They had sensed something special about Sophia. And they would not stop until they found both of them. The lights of the city continued to shine, hiding the secret battle happening in its heart.
