Issue of the Past
“ESTELLE AVARIE!” the thunder-like shout of her manager makes her heart skip a beat, she rolled her eyes before facing Amara, her manager. Amara throws the iPad in her direction which she obliquely catches and tirelessly scans what’s inside of it that makes her manager angry. Avarie read what is written on the above hot search “A-list star Avarie and B-list actor Luke Hemmingston seen in a 5-star hotel looking sensually with each other” she laughs at the statement, what kind of nonsense is this, putting unreliable article and labeling as if it’s true and this crazy netizen immediately believed, what a pity. True to that, Avarie did meet Luke in a five-star hotel with their colleague but the media seems to twist it putting them in a spotlight which is nonsensical.
“Kindly explain it to me Avarie, as your manager I have the right to know the truth. You told me not to worry and that you won’t do wrong at that certain party which I somehow believed and look what you did? Another scandal? We just clear your name from your dating scandal 2 weeks ago and here’s another one?” her manager problematically stated while shaking her head in disbelief and disappointment.
“You know me well, Amara. Do you think I would get interested in Luke? For goodness sake, he’s not on my level” I jokingly said while tapping her shoulder.
“I won’t buy that excuse Avarie. Last time you also dated a b-list actor not just once nor twice but thrice, Avarie, thrice” she exclaimed.
“I did nothing wrong, Amara, I was just being friendly to Luke. What do you expect me to do, treat him coldly as if he does something wrong to me? You know that I treated my co-stars professionally. The picture you saw was just me being casual and professional to them and nothing else” I boredly explain.
“Okay, okay but the next time you will gonna be involved in a dating scandal again, I’ll resign. I am the one who gets lectured by the higher-ups every time you do something wrong and my heart can’t handle their harsh words anymore. If you want me to stay then be good” her manager said as she walks out of her condo.
Avarie considered Amara as one of the most important people in her life and it hasn’t crossed her mind that her manager would leave her one day. Amara was the only manager who accepts her bad side and patiently walks with her through her ups and downs and so she grew instantly to her, unlike her previous managers who doesn’t last long. Amara is in her late 30’s and has a family to feed as she is a divorced woman, she has 3 children which are close to Avarie as well, and whom she treated as her siblings. Amara’s word lingers on Avarie’s mind and decided to lie low in a couple of weeks, knowing that her upcoming project and hectic schedule will begin next month so she needs to bring a good impression too.
“ESTELLE AVARIE DIAMANDES RELLA” the angry voice of her father makes her shiver in fear. She knows that by now her father has seen her report card which is below his expectation, B+ is already considered a failure to her father. Little Avarie tries to fit in her closet to avoid getting caught and punished but to her dismay, her father caught her and brought her to his lecture room where different types of punitive equipment are stored and displayed on each side of the room.
Avarie cried and asked her father to forgive her but the dark and hard Maximo doesn’t mind her daughter’s plea and started to whip her with a metal belt.
“Why can’t you be like your sister who never fails me, who obeys me and do what I asked. Avarie why are you so dumb like your mom? You only bring shame to this family, after this consider yourself lucky, I will no longer be your father as you’re not deserving to be my daughter. I am disowning you!” her father's whip doesn’t seem painful at all but the word he utters shattered her heart into pieces.
"Dad, forgive me, please. I promise to be better in school and I will get good grades too just give me a chance" I beg to hope for his consideration.
"You know my rules Avarie" a single word from a man she always looked up to put an end to everything.
Does all father like my dad? Why does it seem so easy for him to discard me like I'm just some kind of thing that can be thrown easily when useless? How can he do this to me? If only mom is here I wouldn’t have experienced such a hellish life. I was educated in a household where a single mistake equates to death and where perfection must always be practiced even though none of us are perfect. The hypocrisy of my family is beyond its limit that I can't able to digest.
“AVARIE, Wake up! You’re having a bad dream” I suddenly opened my eyes due to the harsh shake of my body. I did not realize that I doze off while playing games on my phone.
“What did you dream? You’re shouting and crying while saying sorry to someone. Who hurt you in your dream?” a worried expression of my manager makes me at ease while she handed me a glass of water.
I touch my cheeks and feel the wetness of it, evidence of the tears I shed for that demon. It’s been 12 years and I can’t seem to forget the person who wounded my heart so deeply. Yet, I wonder how he is right now? If he’s still in good health or if he ever regrets hurting me.
I shake my head before looking back at my manager
“Just a random dream Amara, nothing serious”
“Are you sure? Remember to pray when you sleep to avoid getting bad dreams” she lectures me.
“Yes, I will. Thank you. Why are you here by the way?”
“Just to remind you of the cf that needs to be shoot tomorrow,” she said while handing me a dress that I assume my attire for tomorrow.
“Okay, noted Amara”
“Don’t forget to attend the after-party as well, be good to the investors, and as much as possible avoid being too friendly with your male co-star. I cannot be with you because Anaiz is sick and I can’t leave her at night. Be good to Lexie, okay? You know she can’t handle your bratty attitude” she said referring to my assistant manager. I just nodded in response.
“I’m going now,” Amara said while picking her belongings on the couch.
