The early morning sun spread over the the village of Nkembong like a blessing and a curse .its shining light spilling over the brown earth , waking up , women, men , children , animals, tress standing tall as if trying to protect the soil . Birds chirping, c***s crowing ,indicating the awakening of Dawn , but dawn never came in the heart of Eposi. Eposi is a beautiful , bold ,and courageous young girl who had dreams of her own , she has always believed that her purpose in life was to become someone greater . Her gait was confident yet cautious ,like someone walking between two worlds . One of which she lives in and the other a world she’s trying to venture into . Her bag of coco yams stood on top her head as if it understood her world . “Eposi please slow down ,”her sister Brenda said, while trying to walk up to her pace . “If we keep walking slowly, mama’s porridge would get burnt ,”Eposi answered . As they reached the bend near the old Ndongo river they stopped. The river was where-women washed clothes , children swam , and stories were told, the villages lifeline . Yet today , it is muddy and low . “Even the river is tired,” she murmured. Brenda looked at her “tired of what? “Of carrying us ,”Eposi said softly . “Of our silence .” Scene 1: The Market Place Later that morning, the market of Ndongo was alive with its usual chaos, traders shouting , goats bleating , the rhythm of bargaining and laughter. Brenda worked there everyday , selling her cassava bread , beside her friend Tasha , who sold vegetables and gossip at once .“Eposi ,” Tasha said leaning closer “ did you hear? Chiefs son ,James , returned back from the city yesterday .” “ what does it has to do with me !? Eposi asked in an uninterested tone .“ Because he said, he wants a woman of substance and he mentioned you ,” Tasha replied. Eposi shook her head and laughed beneath her breath . “He wants a woman of substance, who will wash his clothes, clean , cook for him and smile only when asked to ,” God forbid Eposi said , spitting on the ground as if swearing . “ lower your voice , remember the trees have ears ,” Tasha said . The two girls were done for the day and so decided to go home .Scene 2 : The Meeting Later that evening, Brenda attended a gathering at an old school , covered in grease and lack of hope . A group of young women from the from the nearby town came to speak about , the girl child’s education, also economic empowerment. The head the of the group was a tall woman in her mid thirties who has achieved a degree in Doctoring her name was Mrs,Clara . She spoke so calm , her voice could calm a storm . Everyone listened carefully. some were scared , others murmured amongst themselves. I was seated at the back of the class , hands folded across my chest , as I listened carefully , a light of hope stroke my heart . When the gathering was over , I walked up to Mrs,Clara and asked “How do we change something that has existed before we were born ?. She looked at me and said , “sometimes one needs to try and if you fail , try again, one day you will eventually succeed .” Scene 3: The Promise Her voice echoed in my head as I walked home . I sat in front of my mother’s hut , looking at the sky , thought clouding my mind . “ you were silent during dinner , is everything okay ?my mother , Mama Eposi , asked as she sat down beside me . “ Mama can change ever happen in this village?” Her mother just looked at her and said, “ when I was young like you , my dream was to be able to visit the neighboring village without permission. But I failed . Eposi looked up at the sky and muttered, I will not fail .Scene 4: The Whisper Of Change Days passed . Then weeks . Eposi began teaching a few girls from the market everyday after work . At first it was just her sister Brenda and two other girls , then five . Then ten . But the joy didn’t last for long as news had already reached Chief Obi , James father , that Eposi was corrupting the minds of the young girls in the village. Eposi was summoned to the palace later that evening for questioning.Scene 5: The Confrontation The courtyard was with elders , drums , and disapproving eyes . Eposi stood tall, though her knees shook .“ young woman,”the chiefs voice boomed , “ we hear you teach girls to question their duties , to reject marriage, to behave like men , is this true ?”Eposi met his gaze . “ I teach them to read , your Highness . To dream .To know themselves.”“ That is how trouble begins,” one elder hissed .” A woman who knows too much forgets her place .”“ And where is a woman’s place , is it behind the kitchen? Brenda asked in a firm voice . Women have never had a place, all they do is serve their husbands like their lives depends on it . She continued , “ If tomorrow our men are down , our children I’ll , how do we women help them if all we do is wash clothes , cook and clean ?” Eposi’s heart raced , but she spoke firmly. “Maybe it’s time we find a new place ..
