Chapter 28

945 Words
Everyone that had come down was given a job that had to be done, most of the women had to tend to the children, others were sent to see how the crops faired with the number of eaters that had gone through them. None, that’s how much survived, if they hadn’t been trampled on they had been drenched in the eater’s blood and juices. We had no fresh food. Only the canned stuff we had managed to gather when we went on the last raid. Aside from Jackie a lot of men laid sprawled out on our grounds, a few of them had been half-eaten causing them to be eaters that were pretty much stuck in one place. Granville took the opportunity to teach some of the older boys how to put the eaters down using a knife to the temple. Everyone was doing their bit help around the camp, the woman that had lost men put on brave faces and did what they could. With all that had happened and what was now being done to fix things, it was hard not to miss that no one had seen hide nor hair of Porta. Nor had I seen Devin, which made me think that something was going on. I went around the camp making sure that things were being done properly. I found myself near the school buildings. Pushing down my anger I walked on through to Porta’s classroom. I knocked on the door.  no answer as expected. I put my ear to the door and listened, I could hear two men speaking in hushed tones. I opened the door and burst into the room “Thought I might find you both here,” I said smiling I looked from Porta to Devin, both men looked shocked to see standing there. “cat got your tongue?” I asked when either of them spoke. Devin stood up and exited the room faster than I could blink leaving me alone with Porta. His eyes were darting from me to the window “incredible, how a good thing never lasts, have we… have we begin rebuilding?” he asked wringing his hands in one another “We are leaving if that is what you mean,” I said crossing my arms over my chest “not this ridiculous song again Zooni my dear child, there is no place safer…” “then here?!” I shouted “I warned you this would happen, you turned a blind eye and we lost people, women out their lost families! And you just want to rebuild?” “no one could have foreseen this, my girl,” he said sitting down behind his table again his hands on the table. I slammed my hand down on the table “I foresaw it, Porta, I told you we needed to move and we still do. If you think anyone is going to want to stay here you are very wrong” he got u again he was red in face and he was huffing. “You stupid girl, you have no idea when t stop, you are ruining everything, you are exactly like you good for nothing father” he shouted I looked at him with clear confusion on my face. he smiled and sat back down “ah yes you were too young to remember that, your father had tried to get us to leave as well, but he was clearly wrong, we lasted this long and we can do it again” “you are going to kill the whole camp” I snapped “a few casualties along the way means nothing to me, you, and everyone else in this place can be replaced” I stood up straight, a sneer on my face I turned on my heel, and walked out the door. ALICE POV “How did none of us see this f*****g thing,” I asked looking at what used to be a hidden door at the back of the dining hall. Everyone had been busy all morning fixing the fence and checking every weak spot that had been created after it had been pushed down. There was no doubt about this, we would have to move, the ground had been tainted by the blood and whatnot from the eaters that had been shot near or in the gardens. I sighed as I looked around we had lost half the food we needed to feed the people in this place. “what's the plan,” I asked Zoni as she pulled off the bit f door that was still attached to the wall. She looked u at me with a frown on her face. “we leave,” she said, her face softening as she looked behind her. “we find a new place, pack the cars and get everyone out” “Porta said-“ I started but when she looked back at me I stopped talking and derailed that train completely. I knew that Porta liked blowing smoking up his own ass. “Porta is scared, he has gotten comfortable, he would never survive in this world if he was on his own, he has been using us to keep his comfort level at an all-time high, enough is enough. We need to think of the needs of the camp over one fat f**k” she snapped I raised my hands “I get what you say and I'm not arguing with it, how are we going to do it?” I asked she smiled at me telling me to follow her.
