Chapter 27

ZONI POV

I walked over to the switch and flipped it on, the blaring sound of the alarm of the gate oping started screaming. And I collapsed onto the floor.

“let's not do this again,” I said looking up at Granville as he slowly stood up and walked over to me

“Let's not,” he said sarcastically and plopped down next to me before taking my hand and kissing my knuckles. laughter suddenly bubbled from my throat.

“what's so funny,” Granville asks looking at me as if I had lost my mind in all the madness. And I actually think I might have. We had lost men and all I could think of right now was the fact that I need food. I stopped laughing for a sev=cond to hear my stomach growl which just made me laugh harder than I had before.

I looked at Granville, suddenly moving from where I was sitting and getting onto his lap, and pressing my lips to his without warning grabbing fist fulls of hair and pulling him closer to me. he kissed me back his hands moving up and down my back before they went under my shirt, lifting it he pulled away from me pulling the top off completely before pulling my face back to his. “Ow,” I said pressing my hand to my head, looking down at him as he did the same, he laughed dragging me back down to him, his lips smashed against mine, I slid my tongue into his mouth. He moaned slightly as he pulled away again pulling off his own top this time and pushing me back onto my back he kneeled over me kissing my neck and nipping at my skin softly. As he moved around, I felt him kick something away before he caught my hips pulling down my shorts. I pulled his face up to mine and kissed him deeply.

We had been sitting in the garage for what felt like hours the alarm on the gate had long last died and stopped shouting. It was still dark outside. I could hear the Eaters outside moaning, and moving about but it didn’t sound like there were many left. I stood up taking a chance to look out the window although I was sure I wouldn’t see a damn thing.

I was right about not seeing much, the moonlight helped a bit but it wasn’t enough to see what was happening in the distance. I could see a few dark shadows walking by the building but like I had expected most of the herd had wandered back out the camp. I took a chance, walking over to the switch and clicking it down, expecting nothing to happen, but was surprised when I heard the heavy gates moving and shutting closed. I sighed in relief, this was far from over but it was all about the baby steps. Porta couldn't deny the fact that we would have to leave now. The camp had been overrun and no one was going to feel safe here anymore.

I walked back over to the make-shift bed we had made from the sleeping bags and pillows that were in the jeeps. Granville was half asleep but he was asleep enough that he hadn't noticed I had gotten up. I smiled at me, I was without a shadow of a doubt in love with him, BUT being as stubborn as I was, I would not admit that to him or anyone else.

I stoked the back of my hand down his cheek, he mumbled something and took my hand holding it to his chest. I was in a bubble of happiness, that was suddenly popped, when something started pulling at the door of the garage. Granville sat up at once, the action becoming more and more violent. Granville stood up moving towards the door putting his ear to the door as I moved to the window to see if I could see who was at the door. I saw long hair and a tall skinny body.

“Will you f*****g let me in” came Jackie’s voice from outside “hello, I saw you come in here, there are eaters close by, let me f*****g in,” she said getting louder. I looked at Granville who looked like he was about to walk away from the door but then unlocked it, Jackie came flying through the door, slamming it shut before she locked it again.

“Took you long enough, what the f**k were you doing? f*****g?” she looked at the make-shift bed then looked at me. rolling her eyes at me

“Trust me honey if we had been f*****g I would have left you out there I snapped at her moving over to the bed and sitting down, she stood with her arms folded over her chest, huffed, and then came and sat down next to me before she laid down taking up more than half of the space. I rolled my eyes at her

“How many eaters are out there?” I asked walking over to a jeep and pulling out more bedding, making another bed a few meters away from her and sitting down again patting next to me, inviting Granville to sit down next to me. Jackie sat up again, narrowing her eyes at me.

“You sure get around don’t you?” she asked as she watched Granville sit next to me and kiss my shoulder. I raised my brow at her, did she really want to get into this discussion

“should get some sleep before you say something you might regret honey,” I said sarcastically to her, she plopped back down on the bed, now spreading out like a starfish. She turned onto her side propping herself up onto her hand and elbow

“You know, Granville,” she said in a sweetly sick voice “if you really wanted a good time you could come over here” she flashed him a smile. I could feel him moving uncomfortable next to me as he laid down, pulling me down with him and kissing me to make his point clearer. Jackie huffed and turned to face the opposite side

BRETT POV

I moved from room to room looking for Alice and Nora, the herd had died down after someone had thought past their nose and opened the front gates, I had gone through almost every door in the night building. Everyone except mine. and it later hit me like a frying pan to the face that I should have maybe checked there first

I knocked on the door three times before I heard movement inside. A turn of the key and the door was opened just enough for me to see Alice’s face. he opened the door wide pulling me into the room. And slamming the door closed before wrapping her arms around my neck and kissing me quickly. She pulled away and put her fingers to her lips pointing towards Nora who was fast asleep in the small crib.

“what the f**k happened” I whispered. Alice walked over to the bed taking a seat

“did you know there was a hidden door in the back of the dining room?” she asked her voice low, I shook my head sitting down next to her “neither did I, until the eaters bust through the door, I am assuming the screaming and crying kids didn't help the situation, they broke through and we got out as quickly as we could, my main focus was getting the kids out, I don’t know if anyone was caught or left behind” she looked down at her hands as she said the last part.  Could tell she was worried she had left people behind that knew next to nothing of what she did about surviving in this world. I put my hand on hers and kissed her forehead.

“ get some sleep’ I told her, “there is nothing we can do until morning”

ZONI POV

I could hear a dragging sound on the ground, it was getting closer and something kept hitting against my boot. I pulled my legs closer to my body, while I stared out into the dark. I sat up when I heard a groan that sounded way too f*****g close for my liking.

Right at the edge of the blanket was Jackie, well what used to be Jackie, she was dragging herself along the floor and now moving towards Granville. I had been dead silent the whole time and suddenly a scream left my mouth. Granville sat up Jackie Jackie in the face before he stood up pulling me up at the same time. She moaned and groaned before letting out a weak shriek. Now standing up herself and making a move towards us. I didn’t have a gun and as far as I could tell neither did Granville. How the f**k did I not have a gun with me. I recalled dropping it as I weaving in and out the eaters trying to get in here, honestly, it was a miracle I had gotten in here in one piece

“Plan,” I asked watching Jackie as she got confused with the fast movements we were making as she moved around trying to get hold of one of us,

“Door?” Granville asked as he looked forward

“Still do dark, we might run into another as we open it”

“Knife?” I looked at him for a second before I had to duck and run around Jackie as she swiped her hand at me.

“In the room” I shouted as he skidded and slid past Jackie avoiding the leap she made at him.

“f**k” he said under his breath, he moved towards one of his tool boxes, opening it quickly and digging inside. Jackie moved towards him shrieking as she closed in on him, which won her a boot to the face that sent her backward and slamming into a wall. She got up again, half the skin from her face was now hanging as though someone had taken a flame thrower and melted it from the bone. It made me wonder- for half a second how fast these f*****g things actually decayed away.

Pushing that from my mind and focusing on her again as she ran towards me I got ready to hit her down with the cast that was on my arm, but Granville dropped something making me look back. In that moment of distraction, Jackie took me down. I pushed my feet up against her chest straightening them making sure that her hands were n were close to me as she swung and tried to grab for me

“Any time now would be nice” I shouted as Granville kept digging the f*****g toolbox. I could hear her

jaws snapping as she bit at the air as she struggled to get hold of me. I had to keep moving my legs out the way of her nails she struggled, one scratch and I was done for. I looked back and saw that Granville wasn't there anymore, I heard something metal hit something hard. The pressure on my legs disappeared and Jackie was sent flying.

Granville used whatever he had found and smashed her head in, droping it with a clang. He moved over to me, pulling me up to my feet and checking over my exposed skin, when she was happy with whathe saw he sank to the floor. Taking s deep breath before looking up at me

“I’m over this now,” he said with a smile “if things could stop trying to eat you that would be nice”

We didn’t sleep again until the dawn, as soon as I saw the daybreak I unlocked the door and opened it with Granville close behind me, the grounds looked somewhat clear with a few eaters scattered here and there. The first thing that had to be done today was to clear everything out and then get the fence back up, second thing was to leave this f*****g place and find a new home.
