Chapter 26

“Get back I shouted “Get to the high ground! Seal off the staircases to the rooms, use any advantage possible” I turned to see Devin standing there while the rest of the men ran past him I frowned, running and grabbing his arms as I got near to him

“Plan?” he asked as he tried to keep up with me

“Not a full one, get the men at the west and north walls up onto the roofs and balconies of the buildings”  I continued as picked up speed. I could hear the eaters gaining speed as they found the flat surface of the grounds. I turned to fire at eaters to try to help the slower men before they were caught. Devin did the same but I waved him down

“Go, warn the others now!” I said shoving him in the other direction. I turned back a few of the men were now next to me shooting down at the eaters

“Fall back, head for high points” I shouted as more and more of the men were being grabbed and attacked. We ran leaving some of our own behinds, as they kept the eaters busy. Over my dead was this going to turn into a blood bath

GRANVILLE POV

It didn’t take long to realize that something had gone horribly wrong. the distance shots of the west wall had stopped and shouts could be heard. Devin came running up along the walls.

“Head to the high points” he shouted “they are in” the men jumped from the walls and all started moving towards the night buildings, blocking up the staircases some took to the roofs of the one-story buildings, everyone worked like a well-oiled machine. A few men went towards the dining hall, climbing up on the roof and some stayed at the entrance door.

Zoni came running out from the dark a few eaters a few paces behind her, for a second I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty she is, everything about her was small and made her look innocent as f**k. I shook my head seeing her for the warrior she is. She had blood splattered over the one side of her body and her movements as she ran were fluid. Somehow in my daze, she had grabbed me pulling me into a jeep as she stated it up.

“Mother fuckers” she hissed under her breath as she threw the jeep into gear moved forward full speed ahead. Running down a few eaters before she stopped in an opening, poped out the sunroof, and open fire on the eaters. She ducked back down

“Drive keep the jeep moving, don’t let them take hold of it” I moved with her standing the sunroof as she shot at the eaters, I had tried to avoid running any over while she was handling a gun but I found that to be almost impossible given that they were quite literally everywhere

Zoni ducked back down again sitting in the back seat,

“Head to the school building,” she said trying to catch her breath

“Got it” turned the jeep in a tight circle this time taking down as many of the eaters as I could. Zoni was changing her guns clips in the back seat as we made our way over to the next building, she looked up at me in the mirror as I was looking into it, she smiled at me before hopping forward and kissing my cheek,

“see the ladder?” she asked “stop under it and leave the hand break off we don’t need them climbing up the jeep and onto it.

I did as I was told and stopped the jeep under it she climbed up and out the sunroof, making her way up the ladder,

“Come one” she shouted from on the roof “turn it off but let it roll”

DEVIN POV

I made my way past the men and towards Porta’s door, he had to at least be awake, and the least bit worried about what the f**k was supposed to happen now. I banged my fist against his door.

No answer, not surprising

I banged my fist against the door again with a threat slipping from my lips

“Open or ill kick it open” I shouted, the men that were nearby me frowned but continued to go about the shooting at the eaters instead of questioning me. the door opened a crack before I pushed it open, forcing my way into the room.

“What is the meaning of this” Porta shouted trying to hove me back out the door.

“sleeping well?” I asked as I got in and slammed the door closed. He looked around the room, almost like he was looking for another way out. but he suddenly calmed down and smiled

“My boy, why do you think we have lights out?” he asked calmly I stared at him taken back his random question. He shook his head and sat down on the bed

“to keep everyone safe, had everyone stayed in the rooms with locked doors, making little noise, the eaters would have passed right rough with little issue. Your girlfriend decided to put everyone's lives in danger” he held his hands together as though he were thinking. I frowned at him and he merely shrugged his shoulders. I had no idea how to talk to this man he seemed to always have an answer to everything.

“She is out there risking her life, what are you doing? Hiding in this room” I looked around the room, the man was weirder than I thought and his décor said everything. “ what do we do about the fence that was brought down?”

“Ah well the fence can be repaired but, a life lost is one less to protect the camp”

“DEVIN!” someone shouted from outside, I pulled the door open and heard it shut closed behind me with a turn of a key to finish off. Scott was at my immediate left,

“They are trying to get through the barriers”

ALICE POV

Most of the children had woken up again and  the ones that had been asleep were now awaked when the men started to climb up onto the roof and started firing off shots

“It's okay” I heard Hannah say to a few kids that had screamed at the sound of the first close-up gunshots. Getting the babies to calm down though was a completely different issue. Aside from the shots, we could hear the moaning and groaning coming from the eaters that were walking around the building. I held Nora to me as Hannah held her baby against her chest, coving its delicate ears closed with her hands, the other expecting mothers were helping to calm down a few of the younger kids while the older boys pretended that they were keeping us safe and talking about how they would fight off the eaters if they had to get in. I smiled at them, one winked at me as he brought a bottle of water to Jackie, and me.

“why the hell, are we stuck in here why couldn’t we just stay in the rooms?” Jackie huffed as she looked around the hall moving around uncomfortably on the ground where she sat.

“Don’t like it?” I said “you could just leave and save us all trouble of killing you off later,” I said sarcastically, she snored but didn’t say anything else.

BANG

BANG

“That wasn’t a gunshot,” Maddy said standing up slowing looking towards the back of the dining hall

“is there a door back there?” Hannah asked I heard the fear in her voice

“I don’t know, I don’t think I have ever paid enough attention or noticed if there was” Maddy whispered she looked back at the spot where the banging was coming from

ZONI POV

I  ran across the roof towards the west fence so that I could see how many more were making their way into the camp. they were starting to thin out but the biggest problem was that they were bunched up with no way to get out

“We need to open the gate,” I said turning to Granville, he looked at me with a confused look on his face

“they are in they need a way out,” I said pointing from the fence and then to the gate. “Gun down as many as we can on the way, open the gate, and get everyone into a room to hide out until morning. We can't do much in the dark” we were trying to find a way down and to the gate controls

“Eaters” one of the men shouted from behind me I looked back to see that the doors to the dining hall were wide open

“Wait, the woman and children, what are they doing? Get the gate open!” I shouted over my shoulder to Granville as I moved without thinking, jumping off the room and running in between dodging the eaters and making my way to the hall. The woman was running out shouting as they helped the children through. The men that had been stationed by them created a circle around them as they moved, gunning down eaters as they tried to move the women towards the night buildings.

I ducked under one of the guns moving towards Hannah that was covered in blood,

“what the hell happened?” I asked as I moved with them taking down a few eaters of my own as we moved the group back to the room,

“Did you know there was a door in the back of the dining hall?” Hannah asked trying to keep her face straight and she looked like she was about to burst into laughter. I frowned at her thinking hard about the wall that I was sure was all brick

“No,” I said realizing that I never noticed it

“Well… there is” she burst into laughter this time “they came in through the hidden door” she was trying to get serious again but she just kept laughing louder and louder,  I shook my head at her, she must have been in shock.

I moved to the front of the group looking up at the balconies that came into view

“Make a clearing” I shouted up at the men that looked down at the group as we moved closer. I looked to the man that stood next to me “get everyone int rooms, lock the doors and stay dead quiet!” he nodded his understanding helping the woman climb over the barricades as I ran down halls and past people I shouted for everyone to get into the rooms and stay put,

“Check everyone that has blood on them, help the injured and separate any bitten people,” I said as loudly as I could as I went. I needed to get to the gate control, I needed these things to get out so we could make it somewhat safe again. 

GRANVILLE POV

I ran along the rooftops avoiding the ground as much as I could until I came to the end of the line. Literally. There were eaters everywhere, there was no place for error, if I jumped down now I would be swamped by them. I looked at the gate, there were a few eaters pushed up against the gate, I could hear it groaning against the weight of them.

I spotted Zoni in the distance she was making a run for the control room weaving in and out the eaters before she wrenched the door open I used that small gap to jump down from the roof and roll in through the door before she closed it. I heard her lock the door. standing for a second and panting heavily as she tried to catch her breath
