Chapter 20

1049 Words
With all the excitement of the night before, this was the first bit of time I had to myself, Devin and Granville and gotten in each other faces again, this time about the damn bullet that had been lodged into my arm. I sat up in the bed looking out the window. It was cloudy outside, the clouds looked dark and heavy. I sighed thinking about the fact that I needed to check the fence and the reinforcements that were made. Those had to be strong enough before they were washed away. I slowly got out of the bed wincing when I put weight on my left arm. That was going to get annoying. I looked back at Granville as I slowly stood up. The halls were empty as I walked down to the fences, no surprise though, everyone was told to stay in, unless food was involved, in that cause everyone had to have an exit buddy. Children had to have at least two adults with them at all times, and everyone had to be armed. In case we had missed any eaters. “Why am I not surprised,” Brett said looking me up and down as I got to the fence that had been fixed “no rest for the wicked,” I said as I looked at the men's handy work “as far as I know you are meant to be on bed rest” he countered as he looked at my arm that was wrapped up in bandages “Sure, I’ll get right on that once I’m dead” I looked at the bundle he held in his arms, moving closer to look down at a sleeping Nora, “you should get inside with her,” I said slowly looking up at him, he gave a small smile but shook his head, “I needed to check the repairs, and it looks pretty stable. You, on the other hand. Take today off, the camp is not going to fall apart in one day” he bumped his hip into mine, making me move away from the fence “But” I started but he put his hand to his ear, signaling that he was having trouble hearing me. I shook my head but made my way back to the buildings. But I wasn’t going back to the room, I had bigger fish to fry. PORTA POV I stood at the window looking out at the camp, she was up, I could see yet another bandage on her person, I shook my head, the girl didn’t know when to stop. I shuffled back to my desk reading the report that had been made the night before. It was a shame about Dr. Green, but then again the weak had no place in this world, and if we were being honest she was one of the weak links in this camp. We however lost one and gained another Hannah had given birth with few complications. Good. That meant a limited supply of medical equipment had been used. That always made me happy to hear. A soft knock at the door started me slightly but no matter, that t least meant that it was not Zoni “enter,” I said seemingly uninterested, In walked in the bulldog, odd I thought to myself as he walked into the room, he was fidgeting with his hands. oh how that annoyed me, no matter. I placed my hands on the table in front of me “My boy, “ I smiled “how can I help you” ZONI’S POV I barged my way into the room, not bothering to knock or even give a warning that I was entering the room. Both Porta and Devi looked at me as though I had lost my mind, and honestly, I probably had “Out: I shouted at Devin, he didn’t budge though he looked back at Porta who nodded his head once, and then he only stood up. Hold the f*****g phone “On second thought sit,” I said I turned my gaze on Porta “want to tell me why my bulldog is suddenly your puppy?” I asked him knocking my knuckles against his table. he didn't answer both men just stared at me. “Cat got your tongue, Porta?” I asked as I looked back at Devin who was looking at his fingers, I could tell he was uncomfortable and I was about to make it ten times worse. I looked back at Porta when he didn’t answer me. His eyes were wide but other than that he kept a sober face. “Eaters got in: I said looking at him and smiling “yes…” he cleared his throat “yes I believe so. Unfortunate” “Uh-huh,” I hummed before hitting my hand wrapped in cast onto the table you know damn well as I do that the camp is up in arms, we need to move on. His [place has run its course” “Nonsense” Porta said standing up so that he was now higher than me, forcing me to look up into his pudgy face “we are perfectly safe here,” he said in a calm voice “Are you trying to convince me or yourself?” I had not missed the shakey-ness in his voice, when he didn’t answer I carried on, knowing full well that my smart mouth was about to get me into a lot of trouble. “or would you like to convince Dr. Green?” I could see Porta’s face turning red as he avoided my taunting. “We are in danger, the longer we stay more will die, how do you not understand that” “enough” Porta shouted, he looked at Devin signing for him to leave the room, at first Devin hesitated, looking at me with a look of desperation on his face. I crossed my arms and looked at Porta. Who waited for the sound of the door closing before he said anything. “let's get one thing straight he snapped at me “no one leaves
