Chapter 3

That night she vomited blood. She curled on the bathroom floor feeling as if she was spitting out her insides. This must have been the medicine's side effects, and Ellie hated Daniel even more because of what she was going through. It's not like she f*****g wanted to have s*x with him, let alone bear his child. If he could just stay as far away from her as possible, she would be ecstatic. She wailed in pain as beads of sweat were running down her temples and then felt someone brushing away her hair. She thought it was a maid but then she saw an expensive watch and despite herself threw his hand away vehemently. Strangely enough, he didn't retaliate and didn't even say a word, he just pulled her hair away from her pale face and was rubbing her back in a soothing manner. She was so exhausted that she had no strength to fight him. Half an hour later or maybe longer she finally felt that she could leave the bathroom but when she tried to stand, she almost fell back if it wasn't for his hand managing to catch her before she hit the stone floor. Then he pulled her into his chest and before she could as much as utter a word, lifted her in his arms and brought her to bed. She couldn't even open her eyes but after a while, she felt that someone warm was pressing to her back and that light feather-like caresses landed on her bare shoulders. She woke up when the sun was high, laying on her side in his embrace. There were times before when they actually slept in the same bed but never after that horrendous night so her first instinct was to push his hands away but when she looked at his sleeping face, she couldn't bring herself to do that. He wasn't that cruel after they got married. Sure, he hated her but it was the kind of hatred that would make him stay away from her, missing dinners, ignoring her presence, and fooling around with other women. They lived in his parents' house because Daniel's father Johnathan Dreamount was still the head of the company and the patriarch and demanded Daniel's obedience. However, after a year or so, one of the nights he had quite a fight with the family and it was the first night they had s*x after a year of marriage. She wasn't very willing because she was still very inexperienced, but he wasn't harsh and even tried to please her. After that night, he started sleeping with her more frequently and even started spending time with her outside the bed. After about one year more, Ellie even thought that she was softening to him, and given the circumstances of their marriage, she even thought that she could fall in love with him. She was delusional enough to start thinking that she could tell him why exactly she had to be married into his family in such a degrading way. She had to ask him to hand over to Garry the Delio lands demolition project and she thought that she could use it to get rid of Garry's grip. Then she would ask Daniel to help her free her mother, and then, maybe... But that night after she said about the project and was going to ask for his help, he shoved her into the wall with force and hatred. She was so scared that the words got stuck in her throat. He laughed menacingly looking at her shaking form and then said the words that still have the power to twist her insides. "Then please me." What happened afterward could hardly be called s****l intercourse. He put her on her knees and made her suck his d**k and when he was unsatisfied with her inexperienced and frightened movements, he proceeded to f**k her mouth himself. She felt that hot tears of humiliation and despair, and fear were running down her cheeks but he didn't stop. He pushed her on the bed and f****d her relentlessly everywhere he could land his hands on. At the end of the night, she started bleeding and he rushed her to the hospital... She slid from his embrace when these memories flooded her mind and suddenly felt colder than ever. If there was hope in their marriage before that horrible night, nothing but its shreds were left instead. She was a fool to even dream about something normal, her life never was normal after she hit eight, after her beloved father died. She put on the shirt and pants and was about to leave the room when he swiftly got up and grabbed her arm making her land on the bed by his side. His other hand touched her forehead and when he scanned her face, his eyes got darker. As if sensing something in his behavior, Ellie instinctively wanted to get rid of his presence but at this very moment his hand caressed her cheek and he asked without a hint of amusement. "I wonder how I would feel if you died..." Her heart froze as she looked at the handsome man in front of her and when she was about to say something, he pushed her away and she landed on the floor. Without looking at her, he got up from the bed and left the room. Ellie closed her eyes wanting to erase his calm sleeping face from her memory. When she went downstairs to have breakfast, he already left. The girl named Ginger was serving her coffee and she had a stubborn, determined look on her face as if she was going to mind her own business from now on. Ellie couldn't blame her. Actually, she was glad and surprised that Daniel allowed her to keep working in this house. She ate her breakfast but as she was lost in her thoughts, she heard the mobile phone ringing. She answered the call. "Missis Dreamount, it's the Hoskin Hospital calling, I'm afraid your father Garry Garrikson has died." Ellie's head filled with a buzzing sound and her breath has caught in her throat. "What did you say?" – she asked unbelievably after a while. "Your father has died in a car crash, we tried to save him but he lost too much blood..." – the voice on the other end continued. "Was he alone?" – she prayed that he was alone. "Well, his driver is in the emergency operation room right now..." "A woman, was there a woman?" – she asked impatiently. "No, there was no one else," the voice said somewhat bewildered by her reaction. "You should come to collect his body..." the voice continued but Ellie couldn't be less bothered. "Let him rot there". She hung up before the voice could say anything. She was panting heavily. But slowly, oh so slowly the realization was dawning on her that this man no longer lived on this earth and that she could now get back something she could only dream about only yesterday. She could have her freedom. She dropped her face on her hands and started crying vehemently like a little child and she didn't care that the maids could see her. She cried her heart out letting go of all the frustration, despair, and hopelessness feeling alive for the first time in these long years... She then grabbed the phone and dialed the number of the only person who would understand. "Tony, he has died," she said There was a silence on the other end. "Are you sure?" he finally asked. "No, I got a call from the Hoskin Hospital, they told me he died in a car crash. I hung up on them but now I think I should verify it's him. Will you go with me?" "When do you want me to be there?" "I'll be there in 30 minutes." "See you there Ellie." She wiped away the tears from her face and drove to the hospital. Tony was already standing at the front entrance and she couldn't help but filled relieved when she saw his intelligent face in round glasses. He was wearing his white scrubs so he must have been working when she called. "I'm so sorry to bother you," she said. "What are you talking about?" he stopped and embraced her. "I just pray to God it's him". She nodded and they entered the hospital building. When she told the nurse who she was looking for, they brought her to see the body. "Prepare yourself, it's not easy to see," the man in the mortuary told her lifting the blanket. The body looked horrible, part of the flesh was missing, and it was hard to say if this mass in front of her used to be a human being. Most parts of his face were unrecognizable too, but she saw the tattoo in the form of a barbed wire on his left ankle and felt that her heart was about to jump out of her body. "It's him," she said, feeling Tony's embrace. "Tony, it's really him." "We will need to check the medical records since the victim is in such a state but then you can take the body." She looked at the man in scrubs who just called this excuse of a human being a victim and told him, her voice devoid of any emotions except hatred. "Burn him to damn ashes and pee on the remnants." The man was taken aback but Tony quickly embraced her shoulders and together they left the mortuary and the hospital. The phone in her pocket started buzzing. "Where are you?" Daniel asked. His voice sounded somewhat agitated. "What do you want?" she asked in a clipped voice. "Have you heard the news?" he asked carefully. "About his death?" she asked amused at his tone. "Yes," he replied now sounding irritated. "I did, I just saw him." "Do you want me to come?" he asked suddenly "No, but I want you to meet me at your parents' house," she said calmly. There was a brief silence on the other end but then Daniel said, "Sure." "Was that your husband?" Tony asked a bit surprised. "Yes," she said and then turned to Tony grabbing his palm. "I want you to pay more money to that detective, I want to find my mother as soon as possible. Now he can work in the open, ask whoever he wants, bribe them, I don't care but find her please." Tony smiled sadly taking her hand into his, "I will find her, I promise you." She smiled weakly. They bid goodbye and she drove to the house where she used to live. Jonathan and Julianna Dreamount were not exactly the worst in-laws one could get. Especially, given the circumstances of her marriage to their only son. Actually, they treated her okay, and Daniel's mother was a kind-hearted woman. The first year of their marriage she found herself looking for the company of this lady as she reminded her of her own mother whom she missed terribly. You could say they got close, occasionally went shopping together, worked in the garden, talked about different things. It was Julianna who gently pushed Daniel to get to know Ellie better during their second year of marriage. But after the night when she was brought to the hospital, Daniel arranged for them to move to their own house, and he threatened her not to get close to his mother. So she was left all alone and heartbroken once again, with only his terrifying presence by her side... She drove the car to the lane in front of the familiar house and saw Daniel's car already parked there. The maid opened a door to her and led her to the living room where the whole family was gathered. Julianna stood up from the couch and went to embrace Ellie. For a moment, she was stunned by the forgotten human warmth and felt a pinching sensation in the corners of her eyes. She only now realized how much she missed this woman. "My poor child," she said, wiping the tears from her face. "Come here." Ellie melted into her embrace sobbing uncontrollably not because of the loss they thought she faced but because of all the tension, she felt being lifted away so suddenly. After a while, she finally could get a hold of herself and smiled at Julianna. "Thank you," she said from the bottom of her heart. The woman in front of her just smiled and gently stroke her hair. She finally looked around and saw Jonathan Dreamount and Daniel who looked at her gloomily. "I'm actually here to discuss something with you," she said as Julianna and she sat on the couch. Daniel looked at her unsure, "We will help you with the funeral, don't worry." "I don't care about his funeral!" she said loudly in an irritated manner. This took them by surprise, but Daniel recovered first and looked at her with disdain. "Shouldn't you show at least some respect to your father at least on the day he died?" he asked mockingly. "Step-father," she retorted angrily. Then turned to him clenching the hands and looked him square in the eyes. "I want a divorce."
