Chapter One: The First Meeting
Chapter One
Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Marie residence, filling the dining room with a warm golden glow.
Despite being one of the wealthiest families in the country, the Maries protected one tradition above all else.
Breakfast was family time.
"You're late."
Serena looked up from the doorway with an unapologetic smile.
"I know."
Her father folded his newspaper and adjusted his glasses.
"The president of Marie Tech should know punctuality is an important quality."
"And the chairman of Marie Tech should know breakfast tastes better when everyone's together."
A reluctant smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"There she is," her mother laughed. "Always with an answer."
Serena walked over and kissed her mother's cheek before taking her seat.
"Morning, Mom."
"Morning, Dad."
Her mother slid a plate toward her.
"I had them make your favorite."
"You spoil me."
"I've been spoiling you since the day you came into our lives," her mother said with a smile. "I'm not about to stop now."
Serena's expression softened.
"And I'm still grateful."
For a while, the only sounds were quiet conversation and the clink of cutlery.
Her father looked up from his coffee.
"Busy day?"
Serena nodded.
"A few meetings."
"And more paperwork than I'd like."
He chuckled.
"Welcome to management."
"I was hoping that part would get easier."
"It doesn't."
Her mother reached across the table and gently brushed an invisible crease from Serena's blazer.
"Just remember to eat lunch today."
"I always eat lunch."
Her father raised an eyebrow.
"Eventually."
Serena laughed.
"Fine... eventually."
"That's what I thought."
Her father checked his watch and stood.
"I have a board meeting waiting for me."
"And I have a jewelry collection launch this afternoon," her mother said as she rose beside him.
She leaned over and kissed Serena's forehead.
"Have a wonderful day, sweetheart."
"You've worked hard for everything you've achieved," her father said, buttoning his suit jacket. "Trust yourself."
"I will."
Serena watched her parents walk toward the front door.
"I'll see you both tonight."
Her mother smiled over her shoulder.
"We'll be waiting."
A smile lingered on Serena's face as she picked up her handbag and car keys.
No matter how demanding work became, moments like these reminded her why she worked so hard in the first place.
Family.
The sleek black sedan rolled to a smooth stop beneath the towering glass facade of Marie Tech.
A uniformed attendant hurried over and opened the rear door.
"Good morning, President Marie."
"Morning."
Serena stepped out, smoothing the front of her cream blazer before making her way toward the entrance.
The moment she walked into the lobby, employees greeted her from every direction.
"Good morning, President."
"Morning, President Marie."
She acknowledged each greeting with an easy smile.
"Good morning."
As she passed the reception desk, she paused beside a young software engineer.
"I heard your proposal was approved."
The young man looked pleasantly surprised.
"It was. Thank you, President."
"You earned it. Congratulations."
His smile widened as Serena continued toward the executive elevators.
People respected her title.
They admired the woman behind it.
Waiting by the elevator was Infinity Lawson, tablet tucked beneath one arm and Serena's usual iced coffee in the other.
"Right on time."
"Were you expecting me to be late?"
"I prepare for every possibility."
Serena accepted the coffee with a grin.
"Your confidence in me is inspiring."
"My confidence is fine," Infinity replied as the elevator doors slid open. "It's your relationship with the snooze button that concerns me."
Serena laughed.
The two women stepped into the elevator together.
"So," Serena asked, taking a sip of her coffee, "what does today's battlefield look like?"
Infinity glanced down at her tablet.
"Strategy meeting."
"Investor lunch."
"And the finance review you somehow convinced me to move to tomorrow."
"I prefer the term 'efficient rescheduling.'"
"I prefer 'professional manipulation.'"
A laugh escaped Serena.
"I've taught you too well."
Infinity smiled.
"The prototype team is already in the conference room."
A flicker of satisfaction crossed Serena's face.
"Good."
The elevator came to a smooth stop on the executive floor.
The doors slid open.
Infinity adjusted the files in her arms before leading the way toward the conference room.
"They're all waiting."
Serena straightened her blazer and followed.
"Then let's not keep them waiting."
The conference room fell silent as Serena stepped inside.
Around the table sat the small team entrusted with Haven—software engineers, designers, cyber security specialists, the project lead for Haven and Infinity Lawson at the far end with her tablet already open.
"Morning, everyone."
"Morning, President," they replied almost in unison.
Serena took her seat.
"Let's make this quick. I know everyone has work to get back to."
A ripple of quiet laughter eased the room.
Infinity tapped her tablet, bringing the presentation onto the large display.
The Haven logo illuminated the screen.
Beneath it were three words.
Protect. Record. Respond.
"The latest build passed yesterday's internal tests," The project lead began. "Detection accuracy is now at ninety-four percent."
A few approving nods circled the table.
"What about false alerts?" Serena asked.
"Down to under three percent."
"Good."
One of the engineers leaned forward.
"We've also improved the response time. Once Haven detects a likely emergency, it immediately alerts the user's emergency contacts, notifies the nearest emergency service, and begins securely recording audio."
"Excellent," Serena replied. "People shouldn't have to unlock a phone or search for an SOS button when seconds matter."
Another developer spoke up.
"We're still refining the detection model, but it's learning much faster than expected."
Serena nodded.
"Keep refining it. If Haven mistakes an argument for an emergency, people lose trust. If it misses a real emergency..." She paused. "Someone could lose their life."
The room fell quiet.
Infinity broke the silence with a glance at the time.
"We should wrap up. The investors will be expecting us."
Serena closed the folder in front of her.
"Good work, everyone."
As the team began gathering their laptops and documents, Serena allowed herself one last look at the Haven logo glowing on the screen.
It wasn't just another app.
If they got it right, it could save lives.
She stood.
"Let's go make a good first impression."
The lunch rush had settled into its usual rhythm.
Conversations drifted through Bellissimo's dining room as waiters moved effortlessly between tables, balancing trays of wine and polished silverware.
Adrian adjusted the cuff of his white shirt before reaching for another stack of menus.
Across the service station, Marcus leaned against the counter with an amused grin.
"You know," Marcus began, "one day you're going to leave this place."
Adrian looked up.
"And do what?"
"I don't know. You're too smart to spend your life carrying plates."
Adrian shrugged.
"It's honest work."
"It is." Marcus folded his arms. "Still think you belong somewhere bigger."
Adrian smiled faintly.
"Maybe one day."
Before Marcus could reply, the restaurant's front doors opened.
Both men glanced up instinctively.
A young woman stepped inside, followed closely by another woman carrying a tablet.
She moved with quiet confidence, acknowledging the hostess with a polite smile before handing over her reservation.
Her long blonde hair rested neatly over one shoulder, catching the afternoon light that spilled through the glass entrance.
Her blue eyes swept calmly across the restaurant, observant but unhurried.
Elegant.
Composed.
Impossible not to notice.
Adrian found himself watching a second longer than he intended.
Not because of who she was.
Simply because there was something quietly striking about her.
Marcus let out a low whistle.
"Well..."
Adrian looked away.
"What?"
"You seriously don't know who that is?"
He glanced back.
"Should I?"
Marcus stared at him.
"That's Serena Marie."
Adrian blinked.
"The president of Marie Tech?"
"The very one."
Marcus shook his head with a laugh.
"People say she's richer than most corporations."
"I think people exaggerate."
"They also say she's single."
Adrian laughed.
"And?"
"If I weren't engaged, I'd at least try my luck."
"You'd embarrass yourself."
"I'd embarrass myself in a very expensive suit."
Adrian shook his head, smiling despite himself.
Across the room, the hostess led Serena and Infinity toward a private dining table where three investors were already waiting.
Handshakes were exchanged.
Chairs were pulled back.
The meeting had begun.
A moment later, the restaurant manager approached Adrian.
"Private Room Three."
Adrian straightened instinctively.
"Yes, sir."
"They've requested one of our senior servers."
Marcus nudged him with his elbow.
"Looks like you're up."
Adrian picked up his order pad and took a quiet breath before making his way toward the private dining room.
Just another table.
At least, that's what he told himself.
Adrian knocked softly before stepping into the private dining room.
"Good afternoon. My name is Adrian, and I'll be taking care of your table today."
The three investors looked up briefly before returning to their discussion.
Serena offered him a polite smile.
"Good afternoon."
He handed everyone a menu.
"May I get you something to drink?"
The orders came quickly.
"A sparkling water."
"Red wine."
"Still water."
Finally, he turned to Serena.
"And for you, ma'am?"
"Lemon iced tea, please."
"Of course."
A few minutes later, he returned with the drinks and took their lunch orders before quietly excusing himself.
The meeting continued.
"...we'll need to finalize the rollout schedule."
"The prototype is performing beyond expectations."
"If everything stays on track," Serena said, "we'll be ready."
Not long after, Adrian returned carrying their meals.
He served each guest with practiced precision before collecting the empty appetizer plates.
As he reached for the last one, an investor's hand accidentally struck the stem of his wine glass.
The glass tipped.
Before it could fall, Adrian caught it cleanly.
A relieved laugh escaped the investor.
"That would've been embarrassing."
"I'm glad I caught it, sir."
Adrian carefully set the glass upright before gathering the remaining plates.
"If there's anything else you need, please let me know."
He turned to leave.
"Excuse me."
He stopped.
Serena looked at him with a small smile.
"Thank you."
For a brief moment, he simply looked at her.
Then he smiled back.
"You're very welcome, ma'am."
With a polite nod, he left the room.
Serena reopened the proposal.
"Now... where were we?"
"The international rollout."
"Right."
"Let's continue."
The investor lunch had gone better than Serena had hoped.
Positive feedback, promising discussions, and genuine interest in the project—it was exactly the kind of meeting she had wanted.
By the time she and Infinity returned to Marie Tech, both were already discussing the next steps.
The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor.
Almost immediately, Infinity slowed.
Something was wrong.
The usual energy of the floor had been replaced by uneasy whispers.
Before either of them could say a word, Infinity's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen and answered.
"Hello?"
Her expression changed.
"...What?"
She listened for several seconds before lowering the phone.
Serena frowned.
"What happened?"
Infinity looked up, still trying to process what she'd heard.
"The Haven project lead..."
She hesitated.
"...just resigned."
Silence.
"He cleared out his office while we were at lunch and submitted his resignation to HR."
Serena stared at her.
"Has anyone spoken to him?"
Infinity slowly shook her head.
"No."
For the first time that day, Serena felt a knot tighten in her chest.
"Get everyone into the conference room."
Infinity nodded.
"Right away."
