Chapter 1: Day the Sky Forgot Its Colour
Chapter One The Day the Sky Forgot Its Colour At exactly 11:47 a.m., the world paused. Not because nations agreed to peace. Not because war had finally ended. Not because humanity had discovered the secret of immortality. It paused because something impossible happened. The sky changed. Not gradually like the coming of evening, nor violently like the birth of a storm. The blue above every continent dissolved into a strange silver-grey, as though the heavens themselves had inhaled and forgotten how to breathe. Birds stopped flying. Thousands simply folded their wings and settled upon rooftops, highways, church steeples and abandoned vehicles. Dogs whimpered. Horses refused to move. Even insects disappeared into unnatural silence. Every sound seemed swallowed by an invisible mouth. Then came the whisper. No microphone carried it. No satellite transmitted it. Yet every human being heard the same sentence inside their own mind. "How long will you harden your heart?" Some screamed. Others laughed nervously, convincing themselves it was mass hysteria. Scientists blamed electromagnetic disturbances. Psychologists diagnosed collective hallucination. Governments issued calm statements. But no explanation could erase what every soul had heard. --- In Lagos, Nigeria, Pastor Elijah Nwosu stood behind the pulpit of a modest church preparing to deliver his Sunday message. His Bible lay open before him, but his eyes never reached the page. The whisper had pierced him like a sword. His congregation looked towards him, waiting. Instead of speaking, tears rolled down his weathered face. "I have preached for thirty years," he whispered, "yet I fear many of us learned religion without knowing the King." No one replied. The silence itself felt alive. An elderly woman dropped to her knees. A young man who had mocked Christianity all his life suddenly found himself trembling without understanding why. Outside, car engines refused to start. Television broadcasts flickered. Phone networks collapsed for precisely seven minutes. When they returned... Nothing was the same. --- Thousands of kilometres away, in New York, billionaire Adrian Voss stood on the eighty-third floor of his glass tower overlooking the city he believed he owned. Money had purchased everything. Politicians. Scientists. Judges. Entire governments. But for the first time in his life... Money could purchase no answer. His trading screens had frozen. Billions vanished from financial markets in seconds. His advisers flooded into the office. "Sir, every stock exchange is malfunctioning." "The satellites aren't responding." "The military has declared an unknown global emergency." Adrian stared at the silver sky. "No," he murmured. "This isn't an emergency." "It's a warning." The words escaped his mouth before he realised he had spoken them. --- Far beneath the frozen streets of Geneva, physicist Dr. Miriam Keller watched the world's most advanced quantum observatory collapse into impossible readings. The machine had been built to measure fluctuations in space and time. Instead... It displayed one impossible phrase on every monitor. THE DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED. The engineers rebooted the system. The sentence remained. They disconnected the servers. The message remained. They shut down the entire laboratory. Yet every powered-off screen still glowed with the same words. No software could explain it. No human had typed it. Fear spread through the underground facility like poison. --- Meanwhile, twelve-year-old Daniel Okoro sat beneath a mango tree in eastern Nigeria, sketching birds into an old notebook. Unlike the adults, he smiled. He had heard the whisper too. But instead of fear... He felt peace. His grandmother approached slowly. "You heard it, didn't you?" Daniel nodded. "It wasn't angry." "No?" "It sounded... sad." The old woman closed her eyes. For years she had prayed that her grandson would grow to know God. Now the child seemed to understand something scholars could not. "The world has ignored Heaven for too long," she said softly. Daniel looked upward. "The sky is waiting." His answer chilled her. "Waiting for what?" The boy's smile disappeared. "For permission." --- By sunset, strange reports flooded every news station. In Brazil, rivers flowed backwards for exactly thirty-three seconds. In Japan, thousands claimed to see luminous figures standing silently above the ocean before vanishing. In Egypt, ancient tombs vibrated without earthquakes. In Australia, sheep gathered into perfect circles facing east. Commercial pilots described impossible lights beyond the clouds. Astronauts aboard an orbital station reported that the stars had begun disappearing one by one, not because they were extinguished, but because something vast was moving between them. Mission Control dismissed the transmission. Then contact with the station ended. Permanently. --- That night, every child under the age of five slept peacefully. Every adult dreamed. The dreams were different. But the ending was always identical. A door. A blinding light. A voice asking only one question. "If today were your last chance, whom would you follow?" Millions awoke screaming. Others refused to speak about what they had seen. Some laughed it away. Many wept in secret. Hospitals filled with people suffering no physical illness but overwhelming terror. Psychiatrists admitted they had never witnessed anything comparable. The dreams continued the following night. And the next. --- Three days later, the world's greatest leaders gathered in an emergency summit. Presidents. Prime ministers. Kings. Generals. Religious authorities. Scientists. Every explanation collapsed under scrutiny. No nation had launched a secret weapon. No virus could affect every human mind. No technology could alter the heavens. As debates intensified, every light inside the conference hall failed. Darkness swallowed the room. Then, for exactly twelve seconds... A brilliant white figure stood at the far end of the chamber. No face could be seen. No features could be recognised. Only unbearable radiance. No words were spoken. Yet everyone present fell to their knees. When the lights returned... The figure had vanished. Half the delegates resigned within twenty-four hours. The other half denied anything had happened. History had begun dividing itself. --- Far away, hidden among snow-covered mountains, an elderly man named Simeon carefully opened a weathered wooden chest that had remained locked for fifty years. Inside lay a faded journal. On its final page, written decades earlier by his late father, were these haunting words: "When the heavens lose their colour, the age of excuses will end. Watch the children. Listen to the forgotten. The first witness will not be a king but one the world considers insignificant." Simeon's hands shook. He whispered a prayer. "It has begun." Outside his cabin, the wind ceased. The forest became utterly still. Then... For the first time in recorded history... The moon rose crimson while the sun was still above the horizon. People across the earth looked up in horror. News cameras captured it live. Scientists declared it impossible. Children cried. Animals fled. Church bells rang without anyone touching them. Across continents, strangers embraced. Enemies forgave. Others hardened their hearts even further. Above them all, the silver heavens slowly rippled, as though unseen hands had drawn back a curtain. And somewhere beyond human sight... Something ancient had awakened. End of Chapter One
