Chapter 01
I felt my bones breaking. Heck! I could literally hear them breaking. They were breaking and forming into the skeleton of a wolf. My wolf finally came out, I thrashed around on the dirty floor until the transformation was done. I laid on the floor, feeling sore and ecstatic. So this was how it felt like, I moved my clawed paw across my wolf's skin in awe. It wasn't smooth like my human skin. It was rough, beautifully rough. After some silent seconds of lying on the floor, trying to relieve the sore feeling, I felt someone touch me and I tensed. "Baby? My baby," the voice sobbed, "you finally did it." I knew that voice so well, I knew it like the back of my hand. "I'm so prou-'' Her sentence was cut short as I threw her away from me with all my strength. I wasn't even feeling sore again, I felt a certain burst of energy and I felt rejuvenated. I stood on all fours and walked to her. She had landed against a tree and she cowered back in fear. "W- wh - what are you doing?" She stammered. I stood on my hind legs and roared. I felt free and so alive. The time had finally come. She started to cry, "it's me, your m-" I interrupted her. "My mother." I roared in laughter. If I was in my human form, I'd be doubling over with laughter. She really thought she could abandon me for years and then pop out of nowhere and claim me as hers. She nodded her head vigorously, "yes baby, it's me, it's really me." "You even have the guts to call yourself my mother!" I yelled. "You're not my mother." The words dripped bitterly from my lips. "Come on, baby, come to mommy." I'm sure she was referring to me as 'baby' because doesn't remember my name. I dug my right claw into her stomach, baring my teeth happily as I saw the pain in her eyes, "I've come to mommy, mommy!" I twisted my hand and heard the blissful sound of her skin tearing. Her eyes bulged out and her face pinched together in pain, "ple…" she could barely let a word out. "How's your new family, mommy?" I mocked. "I'm your mother, baby. You sh-" "Call me baby one more time and I'm going to f*****g rip your head off." I seethed. I already loved my wolf self. In my wolf form I felt brave, utterly confident, I felt like I could take over the world. I could even talk in my wolf form. My dumb stepbrother can only roar and growl whenever he is in his wolf form. "Do you know how long I have dreamt of this moment? How I had imagined ripping you apart for all the pain you made me go through." I pulled out my claw and dipped it in the same spot again, this time deeper and I delighted in the sight of her coughing out blood. "I vowed to make you feel the pains you made me feel when you left." "I've lived for this moment, you motherfucker!" I yelled and started to blindly tear her everywhere I could with my two clawed paws. "Lila!" I halted and looked at her, "you remember my name?" I asked her, unsure. The call had been clear but it didn't sound close by, it was like an echo. It sounded like I was being called from another realm through a portal. I looked around trying to decipher where the call might have been from. The voice of whoever might have called me sounded like a man's, and it sounded angry. When I found nothing, I looked back at the woman that called herself my mother and found her smiling. She threw me off her. "Who cares about your name, you wretch!" I tried to stand back up but she kicked me with her feet and my back slammed against a tree. "Ahh" my eyes fluttered close and I groaned. Now I feel sore again. She sauntered to where I was and regally stood above me as though the wounds inflicted on her some minutes ago were nothing. That was when I saw that she had healed, the cuts weren't there again. "You really think you can overpower me, huh?" She laughed, "you untransmutable little wolf!" Smirking, she said, "what happened seconds ago was because I allowed it, you fool." She kicked me again. Oh Goodness. I should have been smarter. I had forgotten that she was stronger, they were all stronger. They weren't like me who couldn't summon her wolf spirit. But I had transmuted, I finally morphed into my wolf self. I touched my face and it felt smooth. "No, no no," my hands shook as I cried and roamed it on my face in panic. I transformed, didn't I? I looked down at my body. I was back to my human self again. I looked up and saw that she had turned into her wolf self. Maybe my name being called was what changed me back, it broke whatever spell had made me transform. "You abandoned me," my voice shook as I yelled, "you brute woman! You abandoned me!" "You and your father were nothing but baggage. A towering wall, blocking me away from the glamorous life I've always wanted!" "You left me for a glamorous life!" I scoffed. Incredible. I tried to stand up, even though I was in my human form doesn't mean I couldn't challenge her. I shall not be weak again. I stood, holding onto the tree I fell against so I wouldn't fall. All the while, she watched in amusement as I struggled to stay on my feet. I would not let anyone trample on me anymore. I managed to stand steady and then I roared as loud as I could with my tiny human voice. And I started to feel it again. I felt less pain and I also felt my bones breaking. Yes! I was turning back. She cackled, "aww, the little wolf is living in her delusions again." My fingers turned to claws, my teeth to fangs…it was happening again. Then I heard my name. "Lila!" It was a man's voice again. A very familiar voice. Shit! It was my boss' voice. I jerked my head from the table where I laid it. "Yes sir!" I shouted as I removed the pen that gummed to my face. His face couldn't have turned redder than it was even if it wanted to. He was boiling with anger. "You're sleeping on duty, you fool!" He yelled. I was sure that there was some kind of work ethic or rule that goes against calling your employees names, names like fools. But what could I do about that? Nothing. All I could do was bow my head as I stared at the desk and let out lots of 'sorrys and I'm so sorrys.' "My office, now!" He hollered out and stormed to his office. Some of the other staff gave me pity looks while some smirked and snickered. I scampered after him like a miserable puppy but he was faster than me. When I got to his office, he was already seated in his seat. With my hands behind my back, and head bowed, I apologized again, "I'm sorry sir. Such an unprofessional act will never repeat itself." He went straight to the point, "we all know you are a sorry excuse for a wolf," he pointedly looked at me before continuing, "worse, one who cannot even transmute. You might as well be a pathetic human." I swallowed and listened to him disparage me with his cruel words. I was used to it, but it still hurt. "And let's not forget that you're always sleeping on duty while disrupting the peace of the company with your fake ass growls." He was lying, I never sleep at work. This was the first time. And was I fake growling? Nevertheless, I apologized, "accept my sincere apologies, sir." He sat up, intertwined his fingers, and placed them on his desk, "for this reason, I've decided that you're bad for the company. You bring bad luck, thereby hitching the growth of the company." My head snapped up, what does he mean? What was he getting at? "From today onwards," he looked me in the eyes, "you would seize to be an employee of this company." I impulsively fell to my knees, "please sir, don't do this to me. Please, I promise to change. I'll do anything you want, anything to make the company grow. Please sir, just don't fire me." I rushed out. He barked out a laugh, sitting back and resting his back against his chair, "you pauper! You're so desperate." I wondered what was so funny as I watched him laugh, "you really mean you would do anything?" He asked when he stopped laughing. "Yes sir," I shook my head with so much force I was sure my packed hair came loose, "I would do anything you want me to do." A corner of his lips tilted up, "stand up," he instructed. Slowly, I did and he asked me to turn around. I did as he instructed, feeling goosebumps on my skin, then he laughed so hard he had to stand up from his chair and support himself by holding on to a wall, "oh Lila. You're as useless as a gum stuck under a shoe. Even if I wanted to use you, there is nothing useful about you." The first tear rolled down my face but I still kept begging, "please sir, pity my pathetic life and take me back." "I'm so glad you know your life is pathetic but unfortunately we don't need that in this company." How would I go back home and tell them that I've lost my job? They would kill me. Besides, we would starve to death since father's pay was too little to feed all of us. Infact, I earned more than him. "The month has ended, please, at least, pay me my salary." I pleaded, and he laughed yet again, "you literally did nothing but cause this company to crumble." The grin on his face disappeared, "Wherever would I get money to pay you?" "Please, I beg of you, pay me. Even if it's half, please." "I have no money to pay you, so get the f**k out of my office," his voice was so loud that I was sure the wolves working outside would have heard him. The tears flowed freely and I couldn't even stop them. I stumbled to the desk that would stop being mine the moment I walked out of this company and packed the little things I had and put them in my backpack. Some of my ex-colleagues felt sorry for me while some thanked the Moon Goddess that I was finally leaving. I even heard one in particular say, "good riddance to bad rubbish!" With my tails between my legs, I walked out of the company. I stopped at the park close to my house and found a secluded place where I cried my eyes out. Why me? Why do I have to be different and be such bad luck? I moped home ready to face the daily doom that awaited me, just that I knew today's own would be extra. As I got home. I looked into my bag to fish it out before knocking on the door but I couldn't find it. Shit!
