“Hey Leah look what I did” Mya ran up to me when I came through the door. “It looks so pretty” l looked over her drawing “Where’s dad?” “Sleeping” Mya went back to drawing. I look over at the sofa my dad is fast asleep. I shake my head. He’s been getting worse since mom died. “I’ll get started on dinner.” “Brad went hunting” Mya looked up from her drawing “Do you think he’ll bring back something good?” “Maybe.” I look out the window just in time to see a wolf grab a child and take off. I drop the dish I was about to start cooking with. It shouldn’t shock me. It’s not the first time I’ve watched a wolf sneak in and grabbed someone. I worried about my brother being out in the woods. I always worry about it but most of the time if he doesn’t go out there and hunt we don’t eat. I hear the door open. “Brad did you bring back anything good?” asked Mya. “I sure did.” “Brad where do you want this?” asked a voice she knew well. “Chad, hey what’s going on?” I ask walking out of the kitchen “You expect me to cook that thing.” “It’s a boar and yes.” “That thing won’t even fit into our oven Chad” Brad put Mya down “We need to cut it up and split it.” “Yeah do that stuff outside” I point to the back “Be careful I saw a wolf a few minutes ago. He took one of the kids.” “Oh f**k” “Chad” I glare at him. “Oh sorry.” “I told you not cuss around my baby sister” Brad slapped Chad in the head. “Hey I said sorry.” “The slap was deserved” I go back to the kitchen “Make sure you guy’s clean up your mess when you’re done.” Brad and Chad headed to the back yard. After skinning, cleaning and cutting the boar. I stick it into the oven. “Wow that was grate. Leah you’re going to make me fat with all the good cooking you do.” “It’s bad to call people fat” Mya took a big bite of her meat. “You can take the leftovers home with you” I take the last bite of my food and put the plate in the sink. “I’ll get the dishes” Brad helped himself to a second piece of meat. “Dad, are you ok?” I ask “You look ill.” “I’m fine” he said taking a small bite of food. “Well I’m heading home” Chad stretched and stood up “Thanks see you tomorrow Brad.” Brad swallowed a mouthful of food “Bye” I hand him the leftovers as he headed for the door. “I hate to eat and run. But it’s getting dark.” “I know” I say be safe. “Have you thought anymore about my offer?” he asked. “Chad.” “No, it’s ok you’re not interested in my like that” he looked uncomfortable “But if we got married you wouldn’t be in debt anymore.” “No but they still would” I look into the dining room “I’m sorry Chad I can’t. We owe so much now I’m surprised they haven’t taken one of us yet.” “Don’t say that” he shook his head. “If that happens –” “It won’t.” “If it does. Get them out of here and get them far, far away where the vampires can’t touch them. Please if they take me they won’t think twice about taking Mya. She’s so young. Who knows maybe it will finally open my dad’s eyes. Maybe he’ll pay next time.” “I’ll see you tomorrow” Chad gave me a half hug and walked out the door. I watch him walk away and close the door. I have a bad feeling about something. My dad is sitting in a chair looking through a box of papers. Brad and Mya are playing a game and I’m sitting there reading a book. Its dark outside it has been for a while now. It’s quiet to quiet. I jump when someone knocked on the door. It was late. “Who could that be this late?” my dad heaved himself out of his chair and heads for the door “Stay here?” There’s another knock and something chills me about it. My eye’s lock with Brad’s. From the look on his face he can feel it to. He shakes his head. “I told you last time we don’t have anything” my dad raised his voice. “Step aside” the voice was cold and sent chills down my spine. My dad walked back into the room looking none too happy. He was then followed by four vampires wearing all black. They looked around the room and there eye’s locked on me. “Leah Winters please stand” said a vampire with brown hair. “Daddy what’s happening?” asked Mya. I put the book down and stand up. “Mya how about we go upstairs” Brad garbed Mya and she started to cry. “Leah what’s happening? Did you do something wrong?” Mya tried to get out of Brads arms. “Hands please” said a vampire holding shackles. “No” my dad yelled as I held out my hands. Fighting was useless it would only get me killed and then they would take Mya. “Dad, stop” I say “It’s ok.” “You can’t take her” my dad yelled. “You haven’t paid your debt in years” said the vampire with the brown hair “Your daughter is now that payment. I do sagest you pay next time you only have one daughter left.” “Leah” screamed Mya “Let go.” “Tomorrow night you can say goodbye at the clearing” said the vampire. He pushed me forward and out of the house. I could hear Mya’s screams as I was put into a carriage. The door was closed. I had just enough time to see Brad run out of the house and grab Mya. She screamed even louder as he carried her back inside. I let out a shaky breath and looked forward as the carriage started to move. Throughout the night I am joined by four other girls. The carriage was a tight squeeze. The other girls all looked terrified. One of the girl’s was Ricki’s younger sister who had tears running down her face, which was surprising. We all sat in silence. The carriage stopped and we were all pulled out. With my hands bound it was difficult. But when someone was dragging you out fear of falling was something that was likely to happen. I looked around. There was a very large building on the edge of a big clearing. We were all forced inside.
