Mal POV
Bruce was running full speed to the pack hospital and all I could think of was “why is he freaking out?” I decided to look down and see claw marks across my stomach and blood was gushing out of me. Well that sucks! I look back up at Bruce to see him calm but I see panic in his eyes. Why is he panicking about a scratch?
“We have earned his respect and loyalty from the fight. His wolf and him now feel protective of us,” Gwen tells me panting.
“Gwen, are you okay? And why does he feel protective of us? We are not mates,” I say confusedly.
“I am fine. I talked to his wolf Gatson after the fight. One of the reasons he was so mad was because you remind him of his sister. Then there is also the being beaten by a girl thing. Bruce and Gatson have appointed themselves as our big brother. That is if we allow it. They just want to make sure it’s okay first,” Gwen explains. “Also, Mal, the reason I am panting is because that wolf had his claws dipped in poison.”
I look up to Bruce and come to my decision. I can see now, that I’m up close to him, that he is in pain. It’s not a great feeling to feel pain but not know who could help you get over it. Even though our pains are different, we are going through the same thing. We get to the clinic and he starts yelling for someone as he takes me to a room.
I feel the cold mattress of the bed as he sets me down in the clinic and shiver. Wrong move because that made my stomach hurt. “Holy s**t! That hurts!” Bruce rushes over and tries to help me sit up a little. I just shake my head.
“Bruce, I want you to know that the answer to your question is yes; You can be a big brother to me, but you have to work for it. It will be hard because I’m not used to opening up or trusting people. Are you willing to put in the work?” I watch him as I ask this. At first he is shocked then it changes to happy determination.
“I am definitely willing. I’m the same way too. Ever since my sister..” he pauses and sighs. “I haven’t been myself for a long time. I think we could help heal each other.”
“Awesome. I have always wanted a brother. The closest I ever got was Ollie. He was always..” I get cut off by a burning pain shooting through my body.
“MAL! What’s wrong? Where does it hurt?” Bruce asks, trying to find any new wounds.
My vision starts to darken and I only manage to say “poison” before everything goes black.
* * *
I can hear a faint beeping and voices. I try to move but it’s like I’m being held down. The darkness is embracing me and not wanting to let go. With as much strength as I could muster, I push the darkness away and a light appears. As I get closer the voices get clearer.
“When will she wake up, Doc?” I hear a familiar voice ask. Where do I know that voice? Hold on… I know who it is. Bruce’s voice is filled with worry and it pains me to hear him like that.
“We have successfully removed the wolfsbane from her system and she should wake up soon. By the looks of it her wounds are almost healed. I would say anytime now.” I hear the doctor say.
“Thank you, Doc. We appreciate all you have done,” I hear what sounds to be my dad saying. Now I have to wake up. Pushing closer and closer to the light I finally make it.
I slowly open my eyes just to shut them again because it’s bright. Blinking to adjust to the light and to focus my eyes, I see my parents at the end of the bed. Bruce is sitting in a chair close to my bed and looks like he hasn’t slept at all. Anita and Maverick are on the couch to my right talking. When I move my hand all eyes land on me.
“Honey, you’re awake!” My mom comes over to me. She hugs me like I might break.
“You gave us a scare, Little Star,” my dad says, coming beside Mom.
“I’m.. *cough* *cough*.. sorry,” I try to say but my throat is dry. A cup is put in front of my face and Bruce helps me drink. My throat feels so much better with the liquid gold in the cup.
“How long have I been here?” I ask, dreading the answer.
“4 days,” Bruce is the one to answer.
“Wow! It didn’t feel like that long. It felt like a few hours to me,” I say, laying my head back on the pillow. “Where is Hannah and Bryce?”
Everyone shifts uncomfortably but Anita is the one that spoke up. “They are finishing the mating process. She went into heat so they are indisposed at the moment.”
“Oh okay. That makes sense. Wait but she isn’t marked,” I look at Anita. A she-wolf doesn’t get her heat until after she is marked. It takes about a week or two.
“They were waiting to tell you because of the rejection, but they marked each other the day after we arrived,” Anita explains. I hear Bruce growl at the rejection part. Why didn’t they tell me? I understand they wanted to wait to tell me because of the rejection but I’m not upset over it. They are gonna get a slight butt kicking when I see them.
“They didn’t have to worry about me finding out. I’m fine. I have moved on, well, I actually moved on before it happened.” I just want to live my life without everyone being scared of mentioning anything about mates.
“I will let them know later when her heat stops. I’m going to go get us some food,” Anita says and gets up. Everyone but Bruce leaves with her.
“What happened to the wolf that put me in here?” I ask him curious as to what they did to the man.
“The punishment for attacking a pack member without being provoked is one month in the cells. However, he laced his claws before the sparring session to avoid losing in combat today like he has been here lately. That resulted in lashings and not being able to shift for the duration of his stay in the cells,” Bruce informs me with a serious look. I can tell that just talking about it makes him angry again, so I changed the subject.
“Are you not going to go eat?” I ask him. He doesn’t have to stay and keep me company.
“I’m fine. George is going to bring us food here in a little bit,” Bruce says as he leans forward and puts his arms on his knees. “Mal, can I ask you something?”
“Sure. Ask away,” I say with a wave of my hand.
“What did Lady Anita mean about being rejected?” He looks me in the eye with a serious expression.
“I’m not able to avoid this, am I?” I ask hopefully but he just shakes his head. I take a deep breath and explain my life in Silver Moon pack. Making sure to leave out who I really am though but still being truthful.
By the time I finish, his eyes turn black and growling. “That stuck up ass! Any man would be lucky to have someone like you as their mate. You are strong, smart, and the best fighter I have ever seen other than the king.” He then looks at me like a light bulb went off. “Now that I think of it, you resemble the Queen quite a bit. Are you related by chance?”
Keeping to our cover story, I tell him “Yes I am. She is my Aunt actually. Other than needing to get away from the bullying, I’ve always wanted to become a member of the Royal Army as long as I could remember.” Please believe that. He nods his head and seems to buy the cover story.
“That makes sense. George is on his way with tacos. He doesn’t know you have woken up yet. He thinks I ordered extra just in case so he is in for a surprise,” Bruce laughs.
The door opens and in walks George with a tray loaded with tacos. He sets the tray on the counter. “Bruce man, don’t you think this is a little much? I mean it’s just you ea..” he stops talking when he sees me awake. “Mal, thank the Goddess, you’re awake.” He comes and hugs me and sits down by the bed. Even though we had a rocky start he has also become a big brother to me like Bruce.
Bruce gets up to get the tacos, grumbling that George could have handed them to him. George just sticks his tongue out at him. I couldn’t help but giggle at these two.
“So, Mal, how are you feeling?” George asks. My stomach decides to take this time to let us know that it’s empty. We all burst out laughing.
“I’ll be better once I get some food. Other than that, I’m great.” Bruce hands me a taco and I take a big bite. These things are amazing! I’m also a sucker for tacos.
We sit and talk for the next hour until a nurse comes in and says that I could leave. Mom sneaks into my room with clothes and stuff for me to shower. I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped seeing her trying to be stealthy. She had on a baseball cap, sunglasses, and street clothes. “You do know you’re inside, right?”
“Your point, little lady?” Mom asks with her hands on her hips.
I throw my hands up in mock surrender. “Nothing. Just letting you know it looks funny. If anyone asks, you have a major hangover.”
“Do I want to know how you came up with that so quick!” She eyes me over her shades.
“If you're asking if I have ever drank or been drunk, the answer is no. I just witnessed the Alpha and Beta kids have them,” I say honestly.
“Good. Here, go get a shower and change. Come to the office. We have something to tell you.” With that, Mrs. Pink Panther slips out of the room. I couldn’t help but laugh as I go to get a shower.
After I’m clean and don’t smell like a hospital, I make my way to the office. As I get near the door, I smell that Bruce and George are here as well. I open the door to find everyone there. The moment I close the door I’m almost tackled by Hannah.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so glad you’re awake. We have been so worried about you but couldn’t visit because of my heat,” she gushes then realizes what she said. Her eyes get big like a deer caught in headlights.
“Yeah about that,” I say and punch her arm. “Don’t ever keep happy news like that from me again, Hannah Nicole!” I then smile at my two best friends. “I’m glad y’all completed the process. I call dibs on Godmother. Oh! And just an FYI, I’m going to spoil them rotten.”
They smile since they know that I will and we turn to Dad when he clears his throat. “We have something to tell you, Mal. George or Bruce, one of y’all do the honors.”
George looks at me with a smile. “Mal, we want to make you Head Trainer and Chief in Command of the Royal army.”
“What? That’s Bruce’s job. I can’t take that from him,” I say shocked.
“I’ll be your Co-Trainer. Mal, you are the best for this position and you will make the warriors better,” Bruce says.
Can I really do this? Am I able to do the job? Gwen nods her head in my mind. I look up at my dad and he gives a slight nod. Mom smiles and winks at me from beside him.
“I accept!”
