A FRESH START

Episode 2 The bus ride to the new city felt like crossing a bridge between two lives. Behind her lay heartbreak, betrayal, and the ruins of a love that had never truly been hers. Ahead, there was uncertainty—but also possibility. Eve pressed her hand against the window, watching the rain-streaked roads blur into streaks of gray and gold streetlights. She breathed in slowly, trying to steady the storm of thoughts racing in her mind. Her new apartment was small but cozy, on the third floor of a weathered brick building in a bustling neighborhood. The smell of fresh paint mixed with the faint aroma of baking bread from the street below. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was hers. For the first time in weeks, Eve felt a flicker of control—an unfamiliar but welcome feeling. She unpacked her belongings slowly, placing her laptop on the desk, her notebooks stacked neatly, and a small potted plant by the window. Everything had its place. Everything had a purpose. Everything, she reminded herself, was a step toward the life she deserved. The next day, Eve’s first priority was registering at the university for her tech engineering course. The campus buzzed with energy: students rushing between classes, laughing groups under the sun, professors hurrying with stacks of papers. Eve felt like a small figure swallowed by a world that was entirely new, yet exciting. She adjusted the strap of her bag, her red lips curving into a determined smile. She had survived worse than this. It wasn’t long before she stumbled into the twins—Nick and Nicki. Nick leaned against a lamppost, hair tousled and eyes sparkling with mischief. He had a way of standing that made him look both delicate and wild at the same time, like a breeze that could knock you over without you noticing. Beside him, Nicki laughed at something he said—a bright, unrestrained laugh that echoed across the courtyard. Her beauty was effortless, fierce, and a little intimidating. Together, they were chaos wrapped in charm. “Hey, new girl!” Nick called, striding over with an exaggerated wave. “You look way too serious for someone fresh out of heartbreak. I’m Nick, and this is Nicki. Don’t worry—we’ll make sure you survive this place.” Eve blinked at him, unsure whether to be amused or wary. “I’m Eve,” she said cautiously. “And… survive?” Nicki smirked, a flash of wildness in her eyes. “Trust me, honey. You’ll need us. And we’ll need you too. It’s a jungle out here.” Despite herself, Eve laughed. It was tentative at first, but it came. For the first time since Daniel, she felt like maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t completely alone. That evening, the three of them wandered into a cozy café tucked into a corner of the campus, its walls lined with books and quirky decorations. Eve had never imagined friendship could feel like this—light, funny, and effortless. Nick made ridiculous jokes that had her laughing until tears stung her eyes. Nicki teased her relentlessly about her “serious, mysterious stranger” vibe, and Eve found herself sharing stories she hadn’t told anyone in months. “I swear,” Nick said, leaning back with a grin, “you’ve got a heartbreak aura around you. But I like it—it’s dramatic. Very ‘movie lead’ energy.” Eve rolled her eyes, though a smile tugged at her lips. “I’m just trying to survive my life, not star in a movie.” Nicki leaned forward, her expression fierce but kind. “Survive? Honey, you don’t just survive—you thrive. And trust me, we’ll make sure of it. But first rule: no falling in love. Not until we say so.” Eve chuckled, shaking her head. “I already made a vow about that. I’m done with love.” Nick smirked, wiggling his eyebrows. “We’ll see about that. The universe has a funny way of ignoring vows, you know.” For the first time in a long time, Eve felt a spark—not of romantic love, but of hope. Maybe this city, this school, and these wild, chaotic friends could be the beginning of something new. Something she built herself. As she walked back to her apartment later that night, the city lights glowing against the dark sky, Eve made another vow—one she whispered under her breath: No more tears for the past. No more trust in those who betray. Only me, my dreams… and whatever the future holds. Little did she know, the future was already moving toward her, faster than she could imagine.
