Chapter 3 Unyielding Resilience

1624 Words
The pack house of Dawn Pack fell into a hushed silence. Immediately, the werewolves seemed excited, filled with anticipation to finally make the rogues pay for their attempted attack on their pack. This was especially true for the young werewolves who had never experienced war, not even on a small scale. These rogues had been wreaking havoc for two months, causing numerous packs to suffer. Today, they would retaliate and strike down these rogues, giving the werewolf world a sigh of relief. Alpha James, after a brief moment of tranquility, smiled with confidence. "Very well, let's initiate our plan." He had known all along that these rogues were arrogant, looking down on everyone, especially their rogue king who felt invincible after killing so many werewolves. But Alpha James was no ordinary man. He was one of the most decisive and strategic alphas in the neighboring packs. His assistance to the Midnight Pack the previous night had already put him on guard and made him prepared. Today's meeting was held precisely to counter their imminent attack. On the other hand, he had his beta ready at the pack boundaries, setting up traps. They were just waiting for the rogues to fall into their trap. Olivia was also eager, and Damian had somehow appeared by her side. He held her hand tightly. Olivia knew Damian was a cautious person, always prepared. Perhaps it stemmed from being the son of a beta and the future beta of the Dawn Pack. But she could see the confidence and decisiveness in his eyes. She was thrilled that her mate was as brave as she was. Taking advantage of everyone's inattention, Olivia leaned in and planted a kiss on Damian's lips. Damian's eyes immediately sparkled, and Olivia could feel his excitement, sending a pleasant shiver down her spine. With the chance to demonstrate her power to the pack and her alpha, Olivia became even more exhilarated. So did her wolf. Her beast could barely contain its desire to leap into Damian's embrace. But Olivia managed to rein it in. It wasn't the right time yet. Once this crisis was over, she would indulge in intimate moments with Damian, their bodies entwined, passionately kissing. They would spend their first significant mate time together, even if it meant breaking Damian's supposedly sturdy bed. The mate bond allowed Damian to immediately understand Olivia's thoughts, and his eyes gleamed with desire. Blushing, Olivia tried to pull away, but he caught her hand. Damian brought her fingers to his lips and lightly kissed them. "I feel the same, my mate. I can't wait to have you beneath me, experiencing my pounding and hearing your screams and moans." "That will be the most beautiful sound in this world," Damian said. Then they heard their alpha's command, "Now, let's seize the opportunity and kill these pests." All the werewolf warriors stood up, roaring in response to their alpha's command, showing their confidence in him. Olivia tightened her grip on Damian's hand, filled with excitement. She noticed his palms were hot and sweaty, just like the fiery intensity in his eyes as he looked at her. With their respective weapons in hand, led by Alpha James, they charged toward the pack boundaries, cheering and roaring as if they were already the victorious army. Noah, accompanied by his remaining two subordinates, wreaked havoc and killed ruthlessly at the border of the Dawn Pack. Soon, several border warriors fell victim to their brutal attacks. Then, Zach eagerly stepped forward, followed by Hank. However, alert as ever, Noah sensed something amiss. Danger. His keen senses, cautious mindset, and years of combat experience made him aware of the unusual. "Hold on!" Just as he was about to stop Hank and Zach, a barrage of silver bullets and arrows aimed at them. Fortunately, Noah's timely command allowed Hank and Zach to dodge the attacks, swiftly following Noah as he maneuvered to a safer position. Years of raiding and attacks had trained even men like Hank and Zach, Noah's subordinates, to react swiftly, allowing them to narrowly escape harm. As they retreated, Noah instructed, "Don't advance recklessly. There are many explosives near the gate." Zach and Hank immediately looked towards the gate and noticed that none of the werewolves from the Dawn Pack approached them. "They hate us so much. How could they not be waiting there to eliminate us?" Noah frowned but with an underlying excitement. It seemed he was saying, finally, something interesting had happened. However, Zach and Hank were furious. "These cunning bastards! They ambushed us last night, causing our operation to fail. And now they come again tonight?" Noah, though not as angry, saw a group of werewolf warriors approaching in the distance. Zach and Hank failed to notice the flicker of excitement in Noah's eyes when he spotted a woman among the crowd. However, that excitement vanished as soon as he saw a man holding her hand. It was replaced by an infinite intensity of ruthlessness and hatred. Olivia's wolf stirred once again, experiencing the strange sensation she felt while helping the Midnight Pack the night before. She caught a whiff of an indescribable scent, one that excited her but also carried a sense of danger. Instinctively, she glanced into the distance, sensing a pair of piercing eyes staring at her. She even caught a glimpse of momentary desire within those eyes. Then came an overwhelming surge of hatred and rage. Uneasiness and trembling washed over her as the terrifying feeling from the previous night resurfaced. Could it be that this similar yet different sensation, resembling a mate bond, was indeed caused by one of the rogues? No, she didn't want a rogue mate. Her ideal mate was someone like Damian, someone sunny and courageous. Not the dark, terrifying presence she was currently sensing, filled with greedy and dangerous desires. Near the gate of the Dawn Pack's border, Noah realized he had acted impulsively upon seeing the enemy's thorough preparation. He glanced in the direction of the woman once more, confirming that his impulse this time was almost baseless. How could the Dawn Pack not be prepared? He had anticipated it long ago. Yet, curiosity had drawn him here. However, he was also certain that certain individuals had to be eliminated. Otherwise, they would forever remain a threat. He deliberately ignored the urges of the beast within him. He was a strong enough person who would not allow himself to be controlled by the mundane desires that ordinary werewolves possessed. At least not the kind of impulse he was experiencing. If he wanted to satisfy his desires, he could find any woman. But there were certain restraints he would never want to possess. Even though his own body would still be influenced by some kind of urge. 'Only the weak have weaknesses,' he reminded himself. "Boss, what should we do?" Hank asked anxiously. Noah didn't answer immediately, and Zach frowned as he asked, "Brother, what should we do?" Countless arrows and bullets were raining down upon them. Noah glanced at the wolfbane coated on them and furrowed his brow. "Do you have any ideas about this?" The possibility of that woman wanting to bring him to his demise troubled Noah. But he quickly realized he shouldn't let himself be affected by such emotions. "Retreat!" Noah's tone carried no trace of sentiment. Zach and Hank were astonished. What was happening? Noah had never acted like this before. Even in the face of the tightest defenses, he always managed to find a breakthrough. Had last night's failure caused their leader to lose confidence? Hank and Zach couldn't believe it. But Noah kept retreating while fixating on a certain spot within the Dawn Pack, his eyes seemingly suppressing an indiscernible flame, ready to consume everything. Zach and Hank had no choice but to fall back. Suddenly, an arrow was aimed at Zach. He couldn't dodge in time. The potent wolfbane would paralyze the nerves of most werewolves upon poisoning. They would convulse, froth at the mouth, and lose control of their human form. They would be forced into their wolf form but gradually succumb to the poison, experiencing excruciating pain and hallucinations, teetering between life and death. Almost simultaneously, Noah pushed his brother away just in time to save Zach, his only family. However, in his attempt to save Zach, Noah's arm was grazed, his clothes torn, and his skin scraped by the arrow. "Boss!" "Brother!" His two subordinates shouted in unison. The effects of the wolfbane poison were severe. But Noah didn't even furrow his brow. Instead, he gazed into the distance at the woman who had shot the arrow. His eyes grew darker once again, with an intentionally suppressed flame. He sent a certain signal to the woman through their mind link. Did she want to be a hero? Fine, he would give her the opportunity. As for whether she could seize it, that would depend on her abilities. Olivia frowned as she received a mind link from someone. However, the person didn't utter a word, just sent her a signal. A signal that indicated she could capture and kill that group of rogues. 'No impulsiveness,' Olivia thought. But it seemed an overpowering force made it impossible for her to ignore this sensation. "What's wrong?" Damian noticed a brief moment of unease in his mate. But Olivia shook her head. "It's nothing!" For the first time in her life, she lied to her mate. It felt wrong, but immediately after, a sense of exhilaration for doing something bad coursed through her body. She watched the direction the rogues were fleeing, and she saw her comrades chasing after them. But she knew they wouldn't succeed in catching them. Only she could.
